They want their bars back

Recommended Posts

Gays men have been generally lamenting the endangered species known as the gay bar.  Back in the US, all of the ones I remember from my early adulthood are gone and few that replaced them survived. The diminishing gay bar scene in the LOS is less dramatic but posts keep appearing about the closure of places many of patronized over the years.

According to this NY Times article, it's much worse for our female counterparts. The writer, I figure, at least deserves a nod for coming up with this line: "Lesbian bars are dropping faster than drag queens on a slippery stage."

From the NY Times

CHICAGO — “Where is everyone?”

It was a late Saturday night in August 2010. I had just moved to Chicago, and the second my girlfriend and I unloaded the U-Haul (yes! clichés are fun), I sat down on a box in our new apartment and Googled “lesbian bar Chicago.”

Two hours later, we stood outside the first search result, hesitating. Nervous sweat trickled down my sides in the unrelenting humidity that I didn’t yet recognize as a defining characteristic of Chicago summers. We were about to meet our new community, a whole sea of queers who had never had any dealings with me or my exes!

Music thudded from inside the bar. It seemed promising, so we walked in.

No one was there.

To be fair if I ever walk into a bar with a rainbow flag flying outside of it and discover it's a lesbian bar I happily turn right round and walk out again as they're most definitely welcome to keep their bars all to themselves as far as Im concerned  - if only we could get them to stay out of the guy bars too then that would be a welcome addition perhaps.

Agree.  But for that to happen, the guys on display would have to first stop getting hard-ons.

As much as they hate to admit it, the sight of an erect penis continually reminds them of what a cunt can never do.

Lesbian bars! I didn't know such thing exists.

I did some research into gay saunas, and it seems that one gay sauna is viable for every 500,000 inhabitants of a city. With fewer lesbians than gays (or they just lie low?) you need a much larger number. Let's assume for 5,000,000 inhabitants of a city, one lesbian bar is viable.

A lesbian bar would likely prefer that the clientele is lesbian. The whole issue of women in gay male venues has been controversial. Years ago Studio One, then the top disco in Los Angeles, banned "open-toed" shoes. Most women wore those. The argument was that it was a safety issue. Yet when I wanted to bring my sister there, and she was turned away, I didn't like it.

At the Gaiety male burlesque (RIP) in New York, bachelorette parties discovered the naked strippers and became intolerable. But you couldn't keep them out. The dancers soon learned that the women didn't tip, so went back to trying to please the male customers. The women still giggled nervously or otherwise made fools of themselves.

I have read that a part of the problem is that women have less disposable income than men. I also believe that they simply 'cruise' less than men.

Anecdotal evidence says that they fight more than men do. Seems true in my city. The last time I went to Provincetown was maybe eight years ago. It was Memorial Day Weekend (a holiday to honor fallen military members), so it was a three day weekend with the third day on Monday. We did not know that this was the unofficial Women's Weekend. By 6:00 PM Friday, there were already twelve women in jail for fighting.

Ive read an interesting article about the show gigolos and the interview most of the male porn stars that are also in the escort business. Most of them says that in reality, there is no business for a male escort that cater only for girls in most big cities.

I feel embarrassed at my inexperience of never having been in a lesbian bar.

Same with lesbian saunas, which I don't think I would be allowed into.

Hopefully one day I find a sauna that does not discriminate on gender.

I like equality, a place where everyone can mind his/her business, haha.

Yes, Christiana, lesbian bars do exist. Currently 3 in NY City that I am aware of.

In the past, I and a gay friend, Pierre, would visit Rubyfruit Bar ( now closed) in the Village in NYC. The ladies were very welcoming and we always enjoyed stopping there for a drink.

Note: I  meant to type Christian and ended up with Christiana but decided to let it stand.

The Rubyfruit--and the much more numerous male-dominated bars--represented a time and place in Manhattan when smart phones were unknown and you had to actually go outside to meet people.  And what grand choices there were!  I'd trade all my devices (and years) for them in a heartbeat. The apps have created a new but, IMHO, a comparatively sterile atmosphere.
