Yes, I remember that thread.  @abidismaili and I identified @vinapu's first bar visited, named Up2.  

I believe Twilight was the only bar in that location in 1991, at the beginning of the soi. just across Surawong from Barbiery Bar.  

I remember being in Barbiery, and seeing a prolific poster on one of the Thailand gay forums that some may remember named David in Pattaya.  He was taking photos of the beautifully body painted dancers in Barbiery to post on a gay Thailand forum, as he often did with his photos.  I don't recall which forum David posted on. 

The camera David was using was one of the first Sony digital cameras, one that used a 3.5 inch floppy disk, before Sony developed a memory stick.  The camera was a Sony Mavica.  Hey, don't we have a forum member named @Mavica ?

correct, that was my 1st bar visited ever but  it was not exactly in soi Twilight but on Rama IV, I guess in location where Take -a -Nap hotel later was or right beside

Wasn't "David in Pattaya" the same David that ran a small bar near (not in) Sunee. Soi Yensabai? And then later  Oscars in Boyztown? A nice guy, I recall; and also a performer.  He was extremely kind to an American friend of mine who lived nearby and suffered a very cruel illness in the last months of his life. If so, he passed away about seven years ago.

Right, Up2 bar was on Rama IV, not far from the Rama IV end of Soi Twilight.  It was a fairly large bar, but unfortunately, I believe the out of the way location caused its demise.

but not before mamasan there fixed me with my first ever Thai boy who took me to now boarded up short time rooms in the walkway between Suriwong  road and and Moonlight bar. To this day whenever I walk to Moonlight I take that route for old times sake.

I don't know but when he sold it . A angry  pommy guy took it over ....he had it a few years then the kiwi Warwick formerly of baan dock Mai guesthouse bought it

It was close to the action at that time ,sunee plaza  , tukcom etc 

Warwick the owner sold it in 2015 to a young aussie guy who ran it into the ground and eventually it closed up I think a few years later 

Oh getting back to the bar mentioned by Londoner , the bar was called LE CAGE

Yes....thanks. David and a mate did a drag-act there. In fact , the first time I met him he was in full drag, something I found  rather alarming - not my cup of tea- but I later found him to be a good guy. He was one of that generation that built Boyztown and the Pattaya scene generally after the earlier work of the likes of Jim Lumsden and Michael Burchill.

It is right that they should be remembered on this forum.

Sadly, many of the Thai guys I've known over the past 22 years in the Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya gay scenes have passed away and the above clip brought a tear to my eye. These guys grew up poor and without proper nutrition which in turn affected their physical and mental development and their bodies' ability to cope with the diseases and the heavy party lifestyle which they eventually encountered. One was given rice water as a baby as his family couldn't afford formula. They didn't go to the doctor when they were sick either due to lack of resources, fear or ignorance, and by the time a medical condition was discovered, it was often too late. It breaks my heart as quite a few of them were of my generation. 😔

Agreed; this should be remembered in all our dealings with Thais on the scene. I remember being more than irritated when falang visitors were haggling over a 100 bht note. 

I've seen poverty elsewhere in the world- parts of West Africa were truly shocking. However, the lives of the guys we met (and in some cases loved) were very hard. Many villages didn't have electricity twenty-five years ago- my partner did his homework by candle-light and the outside toilets were no fun. He was bitten by a snake in his family's  at night and  hospitalised. 

I knew what to expect when I visited his parents for the first time: what I saw illustrated once again why so many  young men and women from such backgrounds  went to Bangkok and Pattaya.  I recall telling a friend that my partner had lived the first twenty years of his life in a rural slum. I'm so pleased that he met someone who was able to help. He deserves it.

He lives with three dogs...four until recently when one was killed by a cobra while she defended his farm.  The perils of rural Thailand!
