Whats wrong with being honest with him?

Nothing. It's important to clear the air and any doubts without feeling guilty as we and our feelings in the equation are just as valid and worthy of respect. The Thai guy is no babe in the woods and I wouldn't worry about him losing face as nothing the OP could say would be something the he hasn't heard already, most likely from his fellow Thais. What I do know is that a lie from the start - even a white one - isn't a good start. Look at how much the OP has toiled over the lie and it's a blessing that he found out about it at this point. What I also know is that regardless of what happens, the Thai guy will move on and be alright.

Yup. I believe it's called throwing a sprat to catch a mackerel. A very old fishing tactic.

Not so many mackerel around now, overfishing!

I really didn't discuss the moneyboy situation because it was "I know that you know, and you know that I know" situation. But the whole ten days with him were so sweet. and y I don't really care if he is or not. he still seems to be very much into me. I think your opinions have changed my view on this. Thank you. I will be back to Bangkok soon to see him again. And I am at peace with this.

You're welcome. Another trip soon? Would this be your third in a matter of months? I see you're slowly being reeled in. Good luck!

I will be there basically the whole month of march. Most of the time will be an (illegal) workation, but I am looking forward to it. It is also a test if i could/want to live there long term. And to see how he reacts to it. One problem i have is that thai people simply can't or won't express feelings easily. They do so in actions or small gestures, but having them say something is like pulling teeth, so you avoid that.

If you're still experiencing this, then it could be because you haven't reached an equivalent level of connection with the person you're trying to connect with. Put it another way, he may be nice and affectionate towards you in various ways but it could also be that he doesn't feel as deeply about you as you do about him. Commitment doesn't always come after having a good time.

Alternatively he may have been dropping hints as to what he's looking for which you haven't been able to pick up. I believe this is what is called asymmetrical expectations in a relationship.

In my experience, farang tend to either read too deeply into a social situation or miss the cues completely. I remember when I was younger, some older farang would misintepret or miscontrue my politeness and kindness as some kind of romantic interest which - in their mind - my Asian upbringing prevented me from expressing overtly, when in fact I was just being kind and polite.

My real Thai friends and contemporaries have no problems expressing their feelings to me, including- telling me off; the ones who are my juniors socially, professionally or simply stand to benefit from me in one way or another tend to choose their words more carefully when they're around me.

In any event, wish you another happy and pleasant stay in Thailand @mima_bk.

so i returned this weekend after i little over three weeks. i stayed at a very inexpensive but nice hotel in thonburi near where he lives. there were two local nightmarkets nearby and the the mall lifestore thapra. we spent a lot of time together and i met his two best friends he knew for many years (from school in nakhon phanom). for karaoke etc. one weekend before we wanted to go to koh chang he had to care for his nephew (6) because his sister was working. after she failed to pick him up in time we took the little one with us to koh chang. this was so nice, i am still beaming thinking back to these days. my birthday came up after we returned from koh chang and he chose a rooftop restaurant opposite wat arun for dinner. after dinner the staff surprised me with singing happy birthday an bringing a cake he bought alongside a beautiful handwritten card from him. i was really touched i have to admit. i am so happy how he includes me with his best friends and his family. this guy is the best thing that happened to me in a long time.

Strategically-minded MBs use this method. Real chess players!
