I was going to comment about the 1000 baht cigarettes in Australia but you beat me to it.. it's really become ridiculous. I'm not a smoker though.. well used to be, and then turned into a holiday smoker, but now not so much any more.

I got curious about prices of cigarettes so I asked ChatGPT.

Cheapest to Most Expensive

Vietnam — US$0.60–1.20

China — US$0.70–2.00

Indonesia — US$0.90–2.10

Philippines — US$1.20–1.80

Thailand — US$1.80–2.70

Malaysia — US$2.80–3.30

Japan — US$3.50–4.50

Singapore — US$11–13

United States (budget brands) — US$6–9

United Kingdom — US$16–20

Australia — US$16–23

1000bt to take out men to eat and drink sounds on the low side. But as he's a regular and a VIP hard to say 'no' to.

1,000 baht, is it fair to the boy?  It deprives him of an off with the potential for a larger tip for short or long time with another customer.

But it's anyone's guess if the boy would have been offed, if Rich Asian guy hadn't included him in the entourage.

Take the 1k and go to dinner and drinking, or hold out for a possible larger tip??

if I were boy I'd go for tried and tested, even if that means lower tip

So much for the theory that bar boys don't talk about other customers to customers, lol

I've had quite a few, a lot actually over the years that are quite chatty/gossipy..... If I was talking with another falang , after we walked away the boy would tell me, you know what he likes to do, or his breath smells real bad, and other intimate details.... but many here think they don't 🤷‍♂️

I'm one of those and stick to that theory based on my experience.  Key may be that I never ask them about other customers so they don't feel like gossiping on the free will ?

It really depends. Instead of setting aside 20 days to eat and drink with VIP customer and earning guaranteed 20k, choosing to decline offer might lead to getting to know a new customer who pays well and eventually become regular customer.

Maybe one guy every night? What I found out from another guy (Viet guy who freely volunteered to tell me what he knew about customer) is that he only offs Myanmar and Cambodia guys.

1000k does seem low but it's guaranteed 20k for 20 nights. Plus whatever additional tips that the rich Asian customer feels like giving during those nights.

Here are 2 important facts = exclusivity by nationality type = Burmese and/or Cambodian

I agree with Jason - it is better to have 20k for 20 nights than taking the chance that:

  • you may not get an off every day,
  • you have the constant threat of being rounded up in the next police raid and have to deal with all of the ugliness (deportation, jail time, tea money, etc.) that entails.

When I was a kid, almost everyone smoked or tried to. My father was a 60-a-day man and although he was a doctor and thus slowly becoming aware of the dangers of smoking, he died of cancer. Thankfully I never smoked more than one cigarette in my life and found I just coughed and coughed when i tried to inhale.

I cannot imagine how the dangers of smoking resulting in death often earlier than the normal life span has never reached so many young people, especially the bar boys. The eCancer website points out a lot of disturbing facts that I am sure are echoed in other similar publications. This from 1 May 2024

A large new global study published in The Lancet reveals that cancer-related deaths rose to 5.6 million in 2019 from 2.8 million in 1999 in Asia . . . Among males, smoking, alcohol use and ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution were the leading risk factors.

Most of the Vietnam guys I know smoke. Only a few don't smoke. One of them is my guy. When I asked him why he didn't smoke, he said that when he was young, he made a promise to his mother and he managed to keep his promise. 😀
Good son!

Aunty Vin, that’s my point though. I don’t ask either.

I don’t ask about other customers, I don’t ask about stamps, I don’t ask if they’re gay or straight, if they have a girlfriend or boyfriend, or who else they see. They volunteer it.

Some of them are just chatty. If they know you, or their coworker knows you, or the client was memorable, they’ll talk. Sometimes even the first time you meet them.

If I was talking to one and we both knew you, and he or his coworker said, “Oh yeah, that guy travels with a stamp collection, wears shirts with too many pockets, and dresses like the fried chicken guy before bed,” he’d probably tell me without me asking. And yes, I made up the Colonel Sanders part, maybe 😁

Same with big-spending clients. If someone took them somewhere nice, bought them things, paid a lot, or gave a big tip, a lot of them will brag or gossip about it.

Not every boy, obviously. But way more than people want to believe. Jason, Maybe you think they only tell you because they trust you, or maybe they’re telling everyone more than you realize. Bitches like to gossip  look at us 🤷‍♂️

@jason1975, question for you - You said somewhere in your posts that you smoke Vietnamese cigarettes when in Thailand.  Since your guy doesn't smoke, has he ever mentioned your smoking, or do you not smoke cigarettes when with him?  Just curious, because many people have very strong opinions about smoking, and being around smokers.

You may have mentioned this in one of your posts, and I missed it.  I hope I'm not prying, I mean no offense, just following the posts about smoking, as many boys do smoke cigarettes.

I am a leisure smoker and only smoke when there are other smokers around. I don't smoke at work because none of my colleagues smoke.

My guy doesn't like me fo smoke and drink alcohol because of health reasons. He always reminds me to take care of my health. 🥰

He is used to smokers. Most of his friends smoke. His father is a chain smoker. I believe if not for his promise made to his mother, he would have taken up smoking like his peers.

Thanks.  You're fortunate that he is actually concerned about your health.  He is a definite keeper.

They will only tell you information about other customers if they know you well or they are your regular customers.

During my visit this past Feb/Mar/Apr with my very active social life and an extensive list of regulars, I can say that none of them talked about other clients.  Not one mention.  Of course, to be fair, I also didn't ask any questions.  I was less concerned about what they did with others and more concerned about what they were going to do with me.  lol.  Must get our priorities in the right place.
