Not yet in possession of a smartphone, I have little interest in apps. Yet, I noticed in today’s Guardian that until last September you could have downloaded one which predicted the size of someone’s penis! As the blurb announced http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/feb/14/chubby-checker-sues-hewlett-packard Naturally this caused some controversy. Perhaps some men were disappointed that their app size did not measure up to their larger actual size. Or some ladies were disappointed when the opposite turned out to be true. But now there is even greater controversy over the app’s name. What name would you think appropriate? ‘Peter meter’ is an obvious one, as might b…

I am sometimes a devil's advocate because debates are fun and intellectually stimulating. Winning is not my goal, and I am happy to admit defeat any time. However, it seems Thai lads I've met do not take this lightly, and many of them are incapable of arguing civilly. They become uncomfortable when cornered (they don't shrug and laugh it off like I do). Occasionally the guy gets furious and verbally attacks me (e.g. how I look)! I know there are this kind of people in every country, but I don't expect educated people from top universities (at least the ones I know) to be like this. GRrrrr...

  15. France's lower house of parliament approved a sweeping bill on Tuesday to legalize gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to adopt children, handing a major legislative victory to President Francois Hollande's Socialists on a divisive social issue. The measure, approved in the National Assembly in a 329-to-229 vote, puts France on track to join about a dozen mostly European nations that allow gay marriage and comes despite a string of recent demonstrations by opponents of the so-called "marriage for all" bill. Polls indicate a narrow majority of French support legalizing gay marriage, though that support falls when questions about the adoption and conception of child…

On Sunday for the first time in my life I saw a gay marriage proposal. One of my lesbian friends got on her hands and knees in our local pub and proposed to her girlfriend. She's going to wear a tux and her gf is going to wear a dress and they are going to label all the guys at the wedding "bridesmaids" and the girls at the wedding "groomsmen." It should be super fun and they are an awesome couple.

Isn't it likely that every pope, at least during the last 100 years or so, became too ill or frail to carry on the duties of pope? So, why is this one being "so sensible" about his health and the advice of his doctors? Is there more to it? Where does a retired pope live? Some of these questions and more could be answered in the near term future but some of them may not be answered for decades, if then. Best regards, RA1
