From today's New York Times. Worried about filling seats, airlines have hit the panic button. Amazing air fare sales are breaking out all over. Actually, the sales are breaking out mostly on routes where the competition is heavy or business travel has really plummeted. Not only is the extent of the discounts extraordinary — $158 for a round-trip ticket between Denver and Houston on a sale announced Monday by Frontier Airlines; $548 on Delta between New York and Dublin; $598 round trip between Los Angeles or New York to Australia in Qantas. The time frame is often extraordinary as well. Fare sales like these are usually limited to slack travel periods in winter. …

Nice exposition of an old chestnut about Dorothy & Co. Secrets of the Wizard of Oz The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is one of the world's best-loved fairytales. As Judy Garland's famous film nears its 70th birthday, how much do its followers know about the story's use as an economic parable? By Rumeana Jahangir BBC News Dorothy in Kansas conjures up nostalgic thoughts of childhood Christmases hiding behind the sofa from the Wicked Witch of the West. Or those flying monkeys. It's unlikely its young fans will have been thinking about deflation and monetary policy. But the story has underlying economic and political references that make it a popular tool for teaching u…

I first heard last night that she was brain dead and almost posted then. Natasha, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave, and wife of Liam Neeson died today (Wednesday). She suffered a head injury during a beginners' ski lesson in Canada on Tuesday. I'm stunned that such a seemingly minor head injury could result in death. So, if you hurt your head, when in doubt...go straight to the emergency room. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

The Policy That Dares Not Speak By JANET MASLIN Published: March 18, 2009 UNFRIENDLY FIRE How the Gay Ban Undermines the Military and Weakens America By Nathaniel Frank 342 pages. Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press. $25.95. The core message of Nathaniel Frank’s book about the American military’s ban on being openly gay can be summed up in a single slogan: “ ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Don’t Work.†Mr. Frank has also been offering succinct five-minute synopses of his argument as he makes the rounds of the talk show circuit. So why does his book, “Unfriendly Fire,†need nearly 300 pages of text to make the same relatively simple points? Because h…

Attorney General Eric Holder signaled a change on medical marijuana policy Wednesday, saying federal agents will target marijuana distributors only when they violate both federal and state law. That would be a departure from the policy of the Bush administration, which targeted medical marijuana dispensaries in California even if they complied with that state's law. And so it begins. Let the legalization begin.

I am thinking of getting one of these micro laptops for this years travels, maybe as soon as Sunday or as late as next week, maybe. One of my coworkers got one from Radio Shack for $150 with a two year contract with AT&T's wireless plan for $60 a month. That plan sounds a bit steep for me but we'll see. Does anyone else have a netbook? I have a laptop now that I adore it does what I need when I need it but for travel the netbook in weight alone almost seems worth it. My coworker has the Acer and it was so freaking light! Maybe on a good day it ways about a pound? Hugs, Greg

Bangkok - Thai police arrested a female teacher for having sex with a 13-year-old boy whom she was tutoring in her room, media reports said Tuesday. Police arrested Thanawan Klongsinchai, a 29-year-old English teacher, Monday on charges of molesting a minor, the Khao Sod newspaper said. Thanawan denied the charge, claiming the sex was consensual. Parents of the 13-year-old, who was big for his age group, pressed charges against the teacher after the boy told his friends of the affair, the newspaper said. Thanawan had been providing the boy private tutorials in English in her school dormitory, where the alleged harassment took place. She claimed the boy…

On the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC Tuesday there was a discussion about prisoners being held and tortured in CIA prisons. During the discussion, they quoted a prisoner about his treatment, and said..."We aren't sure where this prison is located, but it is believed to be in Thailand!" Anyone hear anything like that in the past, or any knowledge of such goings on???

Laboratory rats confined together in a small space and subjected to stress they can't escape eventually attack each other in their desperation. So it is with today's Republicans. There was the Limbaugh-Steele cat fight. Limbaugh won. The party didn't. Limbaugh has a special soft spot in his fat for the criminally incompetent AIGers now enjoying their bonuses. His Immensity, accustomed only to the robotic slavishness of supine dittoheads, is having a huge snit at Sen. Grassley for suggesting ritual suicide to the wrongdoers and at Charles Krauthammer for wanting to borrow a guillotine from France ( a freedom guillotine? ) to use on them. Fun to watch. Then there's …

So many things this story could be applied to in these times. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090317/ap_on_..._attack_lawsuit It just goes to show that no matter how much you give a monkey, train a monkey, or how much success you shove down its throat, its still just an ignorant, violent.....monkey. That monkey's handler(the old white woman) should be shot for being so stupid as to think that a vicious animal could be humanized. Favorite quote. "April Truitt, who runs the Primate Rescue Center in Kentucky, has said she warned Herold of the dangers of keeping the animal in her home. She said she pleaded with Herold to consider placing the chimp in a sanctuary, but Herold…

'Star Wars' Scientists Create Laser Gun to Kill Mosquitoes By Anouk Lorie For CNN LONDON, England -- Scientists in the U.S. are developing a laser gun that could kill millions of mosquitoes in minutes. The laser, which has been dubbed a "weapon of mosquito destruction" fires at mosquitoes once it detects the audio frequency created by the beating of its wings. The laser beam then destroys the mosquito, burning it on the spot. Developed by some of the astrophysicists involved in what was known as the "Star Wars" anti-missile programs during the Cold War, the project is meant to prevent the spread of malaria. Lead scientist on the project, D…

This from the yahoo website. The UK's Air Transport Users Council (AUC) has said airlines mishandled 42 million bags worldwide in 2007, compared with 34 million in 2006 and 30 million in 2005. Of the 42 million in 2007, about 1.2 million bags, or around one bag for every 2,000 passengers, were never seen again by their owners. The AUC said that with annual air passenger numbers expected to double in the next decade, by 2019 airlines could be mishandling as many as 70 million bags a year. Which prompts me to ask - where do these lost bags end up? I know there is one place in the US where bags are sent after a period of months in limbo. But 1.2 MILLION?…

It's about time. "Bernard Madoff's new Manhattan home is the size of a walk-in closet, with cinderblock walls, linoleum floors and a bunk bed. Breakfast will be served before sunrise, and the disgraced financier can stretch his legs outside, but only every other day - in a cage." So how long will he be sentenced for? I've heard up to 150 years. He's 70 years old...so basically a life sentence.

How legalization of sex work in New Zealand has gone so far. Selling sex legally in New Zealand In terms of attitudes towards prostitution, New Zealand and Europe are almost as diametrically opposed as they are in geography. Kiwis have opted for wholesale liberalisation of the sex trade, while Europeans are increasingly restricting it. Does the New Zealand liberal approach provide a model or a warning? Henri Astier looks at its prostitution industry six years after decriminalisation, in the first of two articles. When "Sophie", a medical worker from Christchurch, fell behind on her mortgage payments last year, she found that her job was not paying enough. Her only opt…

Being raised a good Catholic boy, the idea that anyone could become interested in the phallus beyond its functions escaped me. Of course, as time went on I learned to appreciate it more, but I was still surprised to learn that in some cultures people were much more open about their worship of pricks. Several years ago I toured the phallus garden at the Hilton Hotel in Bangkok, where phalluses of all shapes and sizes were on display, many clothed in colorful outfits. The hotel was forced to keep the garden when it bought the land, but they don't exactly advertise it. Today there is a review in the NY Times of a book called The Fires of Vesuvius, where an author debunks ma…
