A member wrote to me and asked about my experiences finding tops who bareback, whether they take offense and whether they upcharge. I thought about just answering him back in a message, but I figure that others have similar questions. And I also thought about just covering the topic in my trip report. Instead, acknowledging that there are strong feelings on both sides of the topic, I thought it best to segregate the information with a trigger warning included. So a bit of background on my perspective that informs the experiences I had. I’m definitely not a strict never-condomer. It’s just one factor that I have found is positively correlated with hot experiences. It’s one of a few things I’ve found to be thus correlated, such as big dick, good attitude and attraction (tall, hairy, square-jawed masculine face). So if a lot of these other things are present, I may try to get the guy to forgo the condoms, but it’s not a deal breaker if he won’t. Have I had amazing mind blowing sex with condoms? So why does it matter to me? I can think of three main reasons offhand. First., I really love both slow sex and positions in which it can be harder for the top to maintain his erection (I pretty much hate pounding doggy style). With the kind of sex I like condoms typically compound the problem by reducing the friction further. Second, I really love the feel of the head going in and out, and tight condoms especially kind of smush the ridge ring of the head into the shaft (least of the three reasons). I was very disappointed that 202 was lowering the time limit on rooms to 30 minutes on all nights, previously the limit only on free nights (it was 40 otherwise) it’s not such a big deal to pay the 50 reais overage, but it sets the standard among the GPs how long a session should be, and I fear that the saunas are devolving into fora for low quality, almost furtive sex, with less than stellar boys, short sessions (who can have amazing sex in 29 minutes?) and yes, condom use. I guess you could say I''m the kind of guy who wants it all, and some quick low-quality sex with a guy, no matter how hot, just isn't enough. Among guys in the sauna who are selling their big cocks and not much else going for them, I would think that a higher percentage of these would be straight, less likely to picture themselves as someone who should take PrEP and hence least likely all to bareback. Already previous to this, I had asked their price in the first message, so that may be tamping down on upcharging. Similarly, in the sauna, although after going over this, I do not ask their price, (grave mistake in my view) but rather just as we start toward reception, as if I had almost forgotten, I say, oh, 200 reais, sim? After a rather long pandemic-related break, I visited Bali again in December 2023 - January 2024. Here are my findings - I'll try to keep them factual, succinct, and to the point.
A. General picture of how Bali looks like now. The pandemic has had a devastating effect on them. Pretty much every single restaurant and place of business I remember from before the pandemic is not there anymore. Up-market places (e.g. Bambu, Mauri - these are restaurants if you wonder) are still going strong but they are more an exception to the rule than the rule. December and January are supposed to be high season there (well, not exactly because of the rain season, but still, this is one of the busiest periods there, normally). This year, the average occupancy in Seminyak in December was 37% only. It went up to about 75% around Christmas and New Year but went back to well below 40% immediately after. The locals are worried: they claim they'd had an amazing summer with tourist numbers being much higher than normal but from October onwards, it suddenly went all quiet yet again. To give you a practical example: normally, it takes about an hour to get to/from the airport to/from my hotel in Seminyak. This time, the drive was only 30 minutes. The absence of the usual tourists is very much palpable: the usual Australians are not there anymore and the influx of the Russians and the Chinese still cannot compensate for it.
B. The scene and the entertainment sector. Apparently, Seminyak is not the centre of nightlife and entertainment anymore. For some inexplicable reason, it all has moved up to Canggu. Nobody understands why. I've never seen Potato Head and Ku De Ta half-empty - they are now. Even Finns (a beach club 'up north' from Seminyak) is going out of fashion now. I am not a party person and I strongly dislike clubs. I can only report that the good old Seminyak places are still there (MixWell, BaliJoe, etc) but they are less crowded than before. To be fair, I've NEVER been inside any of them, so I can judge only by the look from the outside. The good old 'spas' are still there as well - the Banana Spa, Elegantz, Adam's Apple etc - but they look very sad these days: I had to pass by the Banana Spa entrance several times over 3-4 weeks, and I've never seen any sign of activity at all. I wasn't tempted to sample the offers in any of the usual places (see the list above): they all have the look of abandonment and desperation.
Connoisseurs of Bali (or just the readers of my earlier reviews) might remember the reports about M Spa at the heart of Seminyak, just next to Ku De Ta, The Seminyak hotel and the flea market, that was closed for good in 2019. It had been an iconic establishment there for many decades but, as I've been told this time, everything had changed when the owner of the premises Paul (some might still remember that the building M Spa was based at was called The Paul's Place) died in late 2018 - early 2019. The heirs had no interest in retaining his property business and all his properties were put on sale immediately. Sadly, M Spa couldn't secure the necessary funds to keep The Paul's Place to themselves and they had to vacate the premises. They have been refurbished and yet another faceless and completely empty (I've passed by them daily and have never seen a single pundit there) generic massage parlour is operating there now (girls offering foot massage). I don't think it will survive.
C. The business. I relied solely on the apps, this time. Interestingly, the most popular app over there is still Grindr. Hornet is almost unheard of. Scruff is still reasonably popular but Growlr, which used to be used quite extensively, isn't anymore. Jack'd is a waste of space. All of the apps work perfectly well via a VPN and, bizarrely, for days in a row without any VPN whatsoever. Here is what the menu in December 2023 - January 2024 looked like. A massage (we are talking massage, not 'massage') might have cost you as little as IDR 85k and up to IDR 200k (at the time, US$1 = IDR 15k approx). As usual, there was no correlation (either direct or reverse) between the cost of the service and its quality. A massage session with extras would be IDR 400k - IDR 750k. Again, there was no correlation (either direct or reverse) between the price and the quality of the service. To be clear - we are talking outcalls here (i.e. the 'masseur' will visit you at your hotel).
- service providers. Before the pandemic, almost all service providers were either Balinese or Javanese. It's not like that anymore: during my 3 and a-half week stay there, I encountered this time a much wider range of service providers: Sulawesi, West New Guinea, Borneo, Bali, Java. Many of those were employees at Adam's Apple, Elegantz, Banana Spa before but decided to go freelance.
- massage. Generally, the quality has deteriorated (we are talking massage rather than 'massage' here). These days, even if you request a Swedish or a deep tissue session, it will inevitably transform into a Balinese massage session when you are massaged by an elbow and a forearm, mostly. Before the pandemic, if I asked for a deep tissue, I'd get it (not necessarily of a good quality). These days, it is Balinese only, even if you ask for something else. This was my major disappointment. Even in (expensive) hotels, you ask for a deep tissue massage and end up with 'forearm and elbow' in the end.
- service quality, customer service and product stewardship. Generally, it still remains high. Unfortunately, the hard times do influence the quality though. Before the pandemic, I couldn't have imagined a conversation like that: "Sir, could you give me IDR 800k now and I promise I'll give you a free massage tomorrow?" Bali used to be one of the very few places where conversations like that had been unthinkable - sadly, not anymore.
- individual reviews.
= A Sulawesi guy, early 30s, former employee of Adam's Apple, Elegantz and Banana Spa. IDR 400k for the job (massage + extras). Massage was very mediocre: not enough pressure, poor technique, slipped into 'forearm and elbow' almost immediately. The endowment was small, didn't perform well, asked for IDR 800k as an advance payment for a free massage afterwards (obviously, he didn't get the money). I didn't contact him again.
= A Balinese guy, mid-30s, a spa worker (a regular hotel spa, not a gay spa). IDR 750k for the job. Exceedingly good massage but did slip into 'forearm and elbow', eventually. The endowment was average but very good fucking technique, genuine passion. Met twice.

Recent Update: It looks like citizens of Japan will not need visas to enter Brazil, going forward. The 2 countries reached an agreement whereby their citizens will not need a visa to visit the other country. 

Few words on Cartagena Gabanna Gay Disco. I have been in São Paulo all week and made it to Lagoa about 5 times including tonight.  I had great times on other nights and really experienced some huge endowments and enjoyable times.   It was my first time in SP and I was not impressed by the urbanism. Everything looks dated and tired. The historical centre is small and dirty. The Sé, the San Bento monastery and whatever touristic stuff they tried to fabricate has very limited interest compared to even 3rd tier European cities. The area of Republica and Bela Vista seemed safe but the infrastructure was dated. Patched roads, running-down houses and visible poverty. In Republica there are some small cute shops catering to lower mid-market, very possibly gay clientele.    I spent most of my nights at Intercontinental. Dated design but very well maintained, and extremely well managed. Being the top-tier member, I was given the Paulista suite with a jacuzzi. Ave. Paulista is a constant reminder of the lost glory of Brazil. Besides museums and public buildings, two shopping centres are considered good, City Sao Paulo and Patio Paulista. They are not very up-scale but have most things one might need. The exchange in Patio Paulista, near the food court, has the best rate (USD 4.8+ vers. 4.7). A much better shopping centre that I visited was the Iguatemi. It has Hermes, Louis Vuitton, etc. Most imported luxury goods are twice the price compared to Europe so I’m not buying ANYTHING foreign here. I do get the feeling that luxury goods are reserved to a very small portion of the population in Brazil. Most of mid-class Brazilians, based on my observation, would buy branded perfumes, which are btw extremely overpriced here, and refill them with local juice. Besides major international mid-market brands, lots of local brands can be found there. What’s really exiting is the presence of many work-shop-stage local designer shops. Very often the shop is street level, and the atelier / office is upstairs or on the back. There are a couple galeries and one, Urban Art, is really good and extremely affordable. Big pieces are going around 500 USD and I was very attempted to get one for my new apartment in Lisbon. Maybe I’ll do that before I leave in August. Many trendy cafés on Rua Oscar Freire and the parallel Rua Lorena. One appears to be very popular, with a long queue outside all the time. I hate queueing. Many chic Paulistanos walk their cute little dogs in this area, which give it a ‘Avenue Montaigne’ vibe. If I were to rent an airbnb, I’d definitely consider here.    I went to Bem Retiro, the Korean / Chinese town on Dia de Namorados (Brazilian Saint Valentine) with my little husband (I’ll explain it in the next post). We did Karaoke (about reais per hour) and had dinner in a very authentic (both the cooking and the decor) Chinese restaurant. It’s actually almost only cater to Chinese customers. My little hubby told me that he wanted to try it since long long time, but they actually request Brazilian customers to be accompanied by at least one Chinese. Not because they are racist, but because virtually no one there speaks Portuguese and the menu is completely in Chinese. It was my first Chinese meal there. I insisted to order Pax + 1 dishes, as we do normally in China. But when the three dishes showed up, we felt obliged to invite 5 more guys to join us. Lol. In Chinese / Korean restaurants here, portions are ridiculously huge. Days later, in another restaurant, we actually saw Brazilian families of 3 or 4 ordering only one dish to share, and it’s fairly common. Brazilians do bring over-ordered food home in plastic boxes, as in most Asian countries, and I love it. Wasting food nowadays is so shameful. Europeans need to learn that!    I spent my last evening in Libertade, the Japanese / Asian town. Many asian shops, filled with cute little stuff. But I was told that most of those things can be found on Ali-express (a cheaper and foreign version of taobao, or a B2C version of Alibaba) for a fracture of the price. At least 3 guys talk about Ali-express and how much they are dependant on it. I’m not a big fun of Japanese food so we ate in a Filipino restaurant. On the table aside were an American couple and they told us that Filipino restaurants are very uncommon in SP. The food appeared authentic and we ate for less than 100 reais! Restaurants are somehow expensive in the city centre for the locals. I’d count 50 to 100 reais per person for fairly simple food. Food court in shopping centres may cost you 30 to 50 and really high-end places might have sky as limit. I did find a Michelin one star restaurant on Oscar Freire, and I tried to bring little husby there, but he insisted that we ate Asian food instead, as it’s more to our taste anyway.    I was using uber most of the time. But I did try once the bus, out of curiosity. It’s extremely simple. There’s someone in the bus to sell the ticket, and it costs 4.4 reais. You can pay with cash, but maybe not too large note, because they won’t have enough changes for you. I didn’t manage to buy the famous ‘Bilhete Único’. They don’t sell it in the subway station, you need to go to main bus stations (am I mis-informed?) Once you have the card, you can charge it on the machines in the station. I was told that old people can ride for free and students pay only half. The bolistas (state scholarship owners) ride for free too. My little husby is doing an intern at an international fashion house and he’s paid pretty well for that in Brazilian standards, 1500 reais salary, plus 700 for food and 300 for transport, which he considers as very generous. He told me the entry level job in that company would be 500 reais more, and a entry level employee in a bank would be 1800 as salary but with probably less food and transport subsidies.    The economy is very fragile here, largely due to bad management of the government. I saw in news that in 2021 Brazilian had the weakest income in the past ten years, with an average of merely 1535 reais per month (if I remember the number correctly), slightly above the minimal salary. 10.8% of the population had less than 210 reais as monthly income. There was the scandal of Petrobra, and another one about the 28 millions of Pfizer and Astrazenec vaccines, costing over 1 billion reais, are about to expire before reaching to the much in-need. Every time I turned on the news, some crazy shit is happening. I decided not to watch TV anymore. It’s a country with such potential, but so much was wasted. I remember, when I was a kid, before China became a thing, Brazil was often praised to be the next economy power house. Even as a foreigner, I feel great pity for it, especially for its people. That said, Brazilians need to learn to be more organized and more punctuate. The numbers of my appointments that were delayed and cancelled were scary. Actually, not once, not once, Brazilians I met were on time, if they decide to show up. I’m not talking about only private appointments here. 
  The transport in SP city centre seems fine, but to / from GRU seems more challenging. My ride  was about one hour each time, which is unbearably long for 24 km. Price-wise, it’s about 15 for 3 km, 20-25 for 5-6 km, and 70 for 24 km, so you get the idea.    I got a haircut in a little hair salon, with a post-industrial vibe. It was 40 reais. The Cabeleireira had little idea what to do with Asian hair, and I wonder where those Japanese descendants get their hair done. I didn’t see any asian hair dresser even in Bem Retiro or Libertade. Later I noticed some more chic places charging 100 reais for a cut.    Oh gosh, sorry for this random jabber. I just wanted to record some facts that I found interesting, amusing or shocking. Hey, since this is my first trip to Brazil I thought I'd give a report of what my experience has been like as a newcomer. 
Started off with a week in São Paulo. Was going to stay at a lovely Airbnb in Consolação but when I got there the owner didn't respond to me when I tried to check in. Ended up having to get Airbnb to refund me and getting a crappy little room at the Ibis Budget Frei Caneca (which was more expensive than the Airbnb), since I knew I wanted to be close to Lagoa. 
So I went to Lagoa several days. As a first-timer, I was impressed with the number and quality of the guys there. I also felt like it was relatively clean, compared to for example Sauna Thermas in Barcelona. I would post up in the bar reading a book and drinking a beer, enjoyed that they had the glass shower next to the bar. The men there were friendly but not too pushy, which I appreciated. I ended up having 3 programas total at Lagoa. I'm a bottom who prefers big guys with big dicks, and I prefer BB but I didn't bother asking as I assumed most of these guys would not be open to it. I probably will avoid next time I'm in town. The areas I really did enjoy were along Avenida Paulista, where there are (mostly free) museums on basically every block, and on the weekend they shut the avenue down to cars so it becomes a pedestrian and bikeway, and Pinheiros, which has so many different little shops and restaurants to stumble on. Also worth walking around Parque Ibirapuera, and across the bridge to the Contemporary Art Museum. I did go to Restaurant Spot because of the recommendations on this board, and it was indeed delicious.
I mainly used public transit, because I love public transit, and found it safe and pretty easy to navigate. The metro is a bit weird in that if you're not a resident, you can't get a card, so you have to go to the ticket booth and buy individual tickets, which are basically little receipts with QR codes on them.
Overall, outside of the República and Sé areas, I felt pretty safe the whole time I was there. It probably helps that I'm a larger guy, and not to be classist, but in general whenever there were a lot of middle-class people around going about their lives, that to me signified that they were choosing to be there and they felt safe.
I flew from SP to Rio on Saturday. I took the light rail and metro to my hotel in Copacabana, and my first impression of the city was that it was bizarrely dead. Both on Saturday and Sunday when I was in the downtown area, it felt like I was in a postapocalyptic movie where there was just no one around, and I did feel a bit vulnerable. But once I got to Copacabana it was clear where everyone had gone. I stayed at the Mercure Boutique Rio Copacabana, which was both inexpensive and lovely. Located right on the beach. I didn't try to have guests over to either of my hotels, but I don't think it would have been a problem at either of them. Just walk right on by the front desk to the elevators and scan my card to go up. 
I went to 117 multiple nights. Usually took the metro there as it's very conveniently located a few minutes' walk from the Gloria station, and in an area that is bustling with locals and feels very safe. The first thing that struck me is that it did feel noticeably dingier than Lagoa. And the second thing that struck me is that several guys whom I'd seen at Lagoa all came up and said hi. I guess a lot of the guys go back and forth between the two. When I first got there (around 5 on a Saturday) I thought it was empty other than the guys hanging out in the front hallway. I had a drink at the inside bar, and then noticed the sign for the smoking bar. Went out there and there were like 25 garotos hanging out out there. I had no idea.

I also went to Point 202 for their big Monday night. Point is very conveniently located in Copacabana, but compared to Lagoa and 117 it is a shithole. It felt so much dirtier and I felt gross the whole time I was there. Even on their "busy" night it was really dead. There was, however, an incredibly hot, muscular latino guy with a baby face wearing a "massagista" shirt. I asked him for a massage, and for 150 reais I got a long, very legitimate feeling massage, with some sensual elements. I'd planned to go to a dance/sex party called Hole on my last night, but I developed a bit of a cough and decided to stay in. The rest of my Rio time included trips back downtown during the week, at which point it was waaaaaaaay busier, to work and go to the Museo do Amanhã, which is very interesting architecturally if not so interesting exhibit-wise. I also checked out the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is very interesting, as well as taking the Bonde de Santa Teresa, which is a nice ride, but not much to do up there. Cristo Redentor was exhausting and IMO not worth the trip. I bought "skip the line" tickets via Viator, and took the Corcovado train up. That was interesting, and then you get to the top and there are SO MANY PEOPLE. The views are great, I'll give it that. But getting back down was a shitshow. The line for the train (which you could not skip on the way back down) went halfway up the stairs to the statue. I'd estimate I waited about an hour to get on a train back down, and by the time I did I had to go back to the hotel and take a nap.
I also checked out the Museum of Modern Art (not worth it in my opinion), and walked around Leblon in Ipanema, which is a much nicer area than Copacabana, with lots of shops and restaurants, and where I'd consider staying next time. I'm not much of a beach person, so I just took a lot of walks up and down the sidewalk next to the beaches, stopping for drinks and food at the many beachside bars and restaurants, and peoplewatching. I never actually touched the sand. I had thought about renting a car to go to Abricó Beach, which is a nude beach outside of Rio, but driving in a foreign country seemed unnecessarily stressful so I decided against it.
In terms of food, my hotel had a great restaurant in it, Q Ceviche, and I went to O Grego twice because it's open late (12 AM) and was delicious. I did go to Fogo de Chão and the meat was my least favorite part. It just wasn't very flavorful. I much preferred the salad bar, which actually had a tray of pork belly with crackling, which was the best meat by far.
Both of my hotels had The Coffee stands nearby, which is very convenient because ordering is done via an iPad which makes it much easier than speaking to a cashier. I found myself going to The Coffee over any other coffee place around the city because of this.
One thing that did make an impression on me is how gay Brazil is. I've seen so many gay couples holding hands walking down the street, even outside of gay areas. The first two times I turned on the TV I saw a drag queen and a gay love scene. There are antidiscrimination notices all over, and on the metro there's an ad for a show called Tunnel of Love that has straight and gay couples making out. I didn't realize how openly gay friendly Brazil is, especially with all the terrible things I'd heard from Bolsonaro.
And overall, everything here is just so inexpensive. A nice dinner rarely cost me more than $40. I'd spend 3-4 hours drinking at Lagoa or 117 for $30. I had 9 sessions with men, including a pornstar, for the same price as 2 would have been in the US. Ubers cost between $5 and $10, even with surge pricing. 
Overall, I've had a great trip and I'm excited to come back. Since it's only an hour ahead of east coast time, it's pretty easy for me to work remotely from here, so I think I may plan to come back for a month or so at some point.

My plane arrived at 6 AM. Instead of begging for an early check in at the hotel front desk, I used the Dayuse app and spent $40 on a hotel room at the city center from 9 AM - 6 PM. It was the perfect location because I had many tasks to run today. First matter of the day is to get a sim card. I took an uber to the Frei Caneca Shopping Center, booked via the hotel internet. Once there, if I don’t get a sim card, then I have no way of booking an uber to the hotel!
 
My first stop was Loja Vivo, where two employees claim that their system is down for today but maybe will be up tomorrow. My Portuguese sucks so much that I can’t call them on their bullshit. As the saying goes “immigrants, we get the job done.” I went with plan B, the Claro store. 4 employees were working but none would even acknowledge me. When I finally got their attention, the lady asked if I had a CBF?
 
Surprise Motherfucker!!! I made the effort to get a CBF before coming to Brazil. When I presented her with a print out copy of my CBF card, the lady said it is not good. I don’t understand her reason, again my Portuguese sucks. My heart dropped.

Day 1-3 is filled with exploration, food, and working up the courage to go to Lagoa. I will jump ahead to what y’all want to read in the next update.
