The entire story is worth a review. The boy narrator, Boas, was the young lover of Alexander the Great. Imagine that, one of the greatest conquerors and leaders of men in all history one of "our tribe".

First, I apologize to one and all for my bad eyesight- two operations and computer glare still foils me. I meant, of course, "THESE are" and the PERSIAN boy., I will try to be more careful in the future. Still, it is worth pointing out that @SolaceSoul was not being pedantic. We can all find innocent uses of the word "boy" but his point, I believe, was that Federal authorities are likely to take the most pejorative view possible.

Sadly, you delve deeply into the various colloquial meanings of the word "boy" rather needlessly as we all know what is meant and how it is used. The word you should thinking about is "should" - yes, you 'should have nothing to worry about." @Kevie770: please understand, unlike your final argument about safety in Santo Domingo, this truly can be a matter of "perspective" Sadly, the new laws gave the perspective of the Federal prosecutors far greater weight than any of us. Persecution of minorities , and we are a minority, is not based on a consensus of opinion of what you meant but rather your actual words are twisted to support the outcome they want.
Is it really so terribly hard to use terms like "guy" or make clear that you are speaking about young men who are over 18? There are forums devoted to Gay Thailand were, after long discussion, we all began to use the term "guy"

Lord, so much. First, while I have been to Rio it was only once. When I take long trips I prefer Bangkok to which I have been 32 times.
I will be celebrating my 70th this December in Santo Domingo. I go to the the island, at least, 4 times a year and have done so for 35 years. I once started counting trips and stopped at 130, having grown bored with the idea . Still, I do not claim expertise just experience.
I started going to Santo. Domingo when El Conde was the Main Street in town. If you can imagine a narrow colonial street filled with cars, bumper to bumper.. as a Main Street.All those malls and highways and big avenues are new. In those days there were two operating male whore house hotels in the Colonial zone. The boys were self employed but were always there. Self contained restaurant, bar. I enjoyed that world until the places were closed down by the bitter, rabidly homophobic old queen of a Cardinal who has recently been, reportedly, forced to retire by the Pope. He was/is a horror of bigotry.
All the talk about where one has stayed, the color of one's skin, matters of age, walking alone are not factual components of good advice regarding Santo Domingo. Atlanta? Sure, Atlanta has a black community. As I've written here before Dominicans consider themselves Spanish in a mixed race society. Discrimination may come from your skin but danger is a matter of what you have and what someone needs. Thinking that you are in an Atlanta like society is foolish and does not reflect Dominican reality; your skin color has nothing to do with safety. The minimum monthly wage is around $200 ( depending on size of employer ) no one really has a true unemployment rate and typical person is working 12 hour shifts. Poverty is very real my boyfriend is white and very poor. Those who give this advice are falling for the old logical fallacy called, " results bias". Because you have not been robbed, attacked, knifed - does not mean the streets are safe. ANY DOMINICAN can tell you they are not.
Solacesoul is quite right. The only safe ATM in the colonial Zone , after the markets close, is the bank across from Independence park. It's indoor with a guard. To think otherwise is to fly in the face of crime statistics and the obvious need for special police in the Colonial Zone. They are better trained and better paid so they are less corrupt. When the main hustler bar "friends" was open drivers like the infamous but trustworthy Freddy, were always outside BECAUSE there were too many muggings at the end of the street right in the zone. All of us came by taxi or walked in groups - white black - Asian?? Does not matter - relative safety is in numbers.
There is only one beach in the capital called Guibia. It was developed for the common people and is well patrolled but it is not a tourist place. Why anyone would be at Boca Chica late at night is beyond me. If you're safe it is because no one is there.
Safety is relative, you are safer in the Colonial zone than most places but parks, side streets, places ill light and without people moving about????? No, it is not safe and any Dominican would tell you this.
But, God yes, you can be safe you can exercise common sense but if you act foolish you might well contribute to the crime statistics . Most tourists are safe because reasonable people do exercise common sense precautions. I mean no offense Kevin 770 but I suspect you do too. Even if you bluster a bit about it - even black tourist's travel in groups more often than not.
I remember a group from NYC who always came down, always rented a big van and travelled around - with their boys. One night, as every night, they pulled up to friends bar ( might have been Freddy's or Phoenix the names changed over the years ) and someone with a poor sense of propriety called out to the owner, Lawrence, "the African Queen has docked..." He was heard and the answering shout was, " damn right! My Mama raised no fool"
I rush to add that this sense of safety is not reserved to black tourists - I sometimes travel with NYC friend who is Venezuelan by heritage - as white as I - who insists he is safer because he "looks Hispanic" - I always suggest he stay out of dark places so the muggers can see...........

I think most old timers in Santo Domingo have their favorite places to stay that are friendly, allow guests and are reasonably priced and safe. I thought we might create a place new people could search. I have frequently mentioned the Palacio on Duarte. It can be pricey if you took search for a good rate. There is a new place calle 454 suites, bookable on Airbnb, that is a block from Pacos and right on Independencia ( next to Dumbos ) has anyone been there, have any experiences.?

If your budget allows I would highly recommend the Palacio on Duarte very accommodating, does not charge extra for an overnight guest. Lovely colonial era building and good service. Check a booking service to compare rates.

OK. First, my apology was because we were going way off topic with the discussion. some forums and members complain about this all the time. I think we did go a bit too far astray to Canada and Bahia sex tourism discussions. All valid but, perhaps, not helpful to the man who asked the initial question.
On another point, Americans have improved over the years and there are articles in regular travel journals that despair of the tendency of quieter Americans to pretend to be Canadian. I even read an article about the increased sale of backpacks with the Maple Leaf flag in the US market. I frequent Thailand both Pattaya and Bangkok for decades and the ugly American has been greatly surpassed by the ugly Russian. I was there in January and Thai bar workers were actually talking about the mixed issue of the poor Russian economy cutting down on visitors - less loud obnoxious, demanding clients but, sadly less clients.
BY the way you should allow for spell check overrides of things like Colombia that go unnoticed by the poster. Columbia is not just once city in the U.S. but the secondary name of our nation since founding. Poetically referred to as "oh Columbia" thus the cities towns, colleges and our Federal District called: " The District of Columbia" English even spells Brasil wrong - not a real issue. As long as the intent os well taken.
I always take a photo of the front and the back ( it has the address ) of the cedula and have iPhoto sinking to both the cloud and google photo. No need to spend time emailing. I stay in Airbnb but for first timers either stay at a gay friendly hotel or use Manny, Freddy or Francisco. They don't have anything special but you don't have access to the more discreet when you first arrive. Security is a priority but don't go crazy the Colonial Zone is where you should be and it is quite safe.

Gregory Mitchell describes the diaspora link in relation to sex tourism in Bahia. The book Tourist Attractions that has been mentioned on the forum a few times. He made a convincing argument that in comparison to me, a white Canadian, Salvador had a distinctly different meaning for visiting African Americans. I am, admittedly, being far more simplistic than you, and perhaps too academia dependent in applying this theme to other parts of Brazil, RD, etc. And since, 99.99999999 % of all our DNA is shared, the notion that sex tourism is race-blind also holds water.
He also made it clear, at least to me, that exploring the roots of Afro American heritage in Bahia was open to exploration to all and sex was another vehicle to explore it. He even noted white women who made the journey. I believe his central theme was inclusive not exclusive. Sex was just another avenue to explore. A sort of bedroom laboratory.
I don't read Dominican history because I have purely a scholarly intent but because I want to feel closer to the boy I care about. I create the recipes in my kitchen, I listen to the music and practice the language. All to grow closer to the culture and thus to those I make love to. The same phenomenon drives me with Asia. When I prepare for a trip to Thailand I start rereading Thai history and novels set there. When I found myself attracted to the Vietnamese workers in Thai bars I began the same explorations.
Having a "different" meaning from those whose roots are in West African does not mean better or deeper or even more - just different.
Salvador — as well as most parts of the African Diaspora — have (or should have) a special connection to African-Americans and anyone of African descent. That is one major reason that you might see many African-Americans traveling there and other places together.
A point well taken. I'm of German-Austrian descent. While my family has been in the US for many generations I doubt you would approach Vienna with the reverence that I do. Yet I have no doubt you would enjoy the music, the whipped cream on cakes, the crisp schnitzel but to better appreciate the culture Prof. Mitchell would recommend that you bed an Austrian boy and share that sachertote and whipped cream with him. I strongly recommend it.
