I'm bumping up this thread for mynakedtop who recently asked about Chiang Mai.

Just a note on Uber.  It ended its services on April 8 but Grab is still running.

Nope.  Your sampling is flawed and thus your anecdotal findings cannot be extrapolated onto "the larger group of gay tourists".  First you need to identify who the current gay tourists spending the big bucks are.  They are not complaining and lamenting the death of Patpong and the Thai sex industry, at least not based on what I've been hearing from my friends and reading gay-oriented sites written in Mandarin.  The huge presence of the Chinese and other Asians in the Bangkok bars speaks for itself.  They look for hot bods and quick sex, are happy to pay the going rates, and then they move on to other stuff on their itinerary.  The ones who are complaining are those westerners on a limited budget  who go to the bars for a social experience.  They miss not having deferential boys serving and fussing over them - aah the good ol' days of Asian servitude are fast disappearing and they are running out of options for re-living their dusty colonial days for a few shillings.  So they whinge and whine.  You can't blame the Bangkok bar owners for gearing their business model towards their main/current market and ignoring the whiners who nature will take care of as the years go by anyway. It's just good business sense.

Why not?  As mynakedtop and others have pointed out, there have been substantive changes in the bars themselves as well as the demographics of their patrons.

actually i found a rather substantive difference between my visits from a few years back and those more recent ones - manifested perhaps most vividly in more aggressive requests/demands for tips by everyone/anyone who works at the bars: mamasans, waiters, head waiters, hosts... and so on down the line....

my visits tend to be brief because i just am not comfortable having to maintain a defensive mode against being harassed and harangued in a place that is supposed to be fun.

but maybe this is all fodder for a separate thread.

when I first came to Thailand more than 25 years ago the regulars of the day where dewy-eyed about the lost halcyon days for gay visitors of 10, even 20 years before, so this is a lament that has been doing the rounds of the Thailand gay scene many times over the years -  including ironically when the (in)famous and eponymous Twilight Bar itself closed its doors!

I think the girls are more open about it now but from what my older female friends tell me, this is not a new phenomenon.  They stay in swanky hotels, ask a for massage from a masseur who's usually hot AND knows how to massage (they've usually been handpicked by these high-end hotels) and if the vibe is right and both agree, sex is included.  It's all very discreet.  One of my girlfriends was only 18 when she had at one of these naughty, hotel massages and her parents were upstairs!  And she couldn't wait to send me a pic of his dick afterwards!

Rather all encompassing statement that I don't agree with. Certainly not the first one you have made.

First of if there is not some back and forth there is no reason to have a board. Everybody has their own opinion and as long as they present their opinion in a polite way then they are entitled to that opinion.

I have banned a number of members as well as suspended some .  But if you start suspending someone because you don't agree with them or they make an off handed comment, then you end up with no members and a very boring board.

IF YOU HAVE A THIN SKIN THEN PROBABLY YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS POSTING ON BOARDS SUCH AS THIS!

The overwhelming responses that Numazu received  were positive and appreciative of his detailed posts . Certainly I feel his contributions were extremely valuable.

I cannot monitor every post but certainly anyone can send me a pm and I always reply.  You may not like the answer but someone has to be the final arbiter.

If someone wants to start a new topic naming the Trolls and why they are considered such then be my guest . But be warned there is almost no one here including myself who has not made a snide comment.

If everyone got to vote on who they would like removed , most likely the Board would like cease to exist

The only thing I'd agree with that view is that it is indeed common.  No-one whether internal or external to a society can understand it fully.  While we can make some convenient assumptions and ascribe certain cultural traits to a group of people for our own convenience, it is no substitute for seeing them as sub-groups and individuals pockmarked by unique social, educational, economic, political, religious, gender and regional differences and personal choices that are continuously evolving.  Otherwise, you'd always be stuck with a glossy, coffee-table-book mentality of Thailand, Asia, etc which is not helpful and is bound to provide a fertile ground for prejudices and stereotyping.

It's resentment, pure and simple.  You're of the same colour as they are and yet you can afford to be the patron and they have to serve you.  At least with the farang they can create an imagined cultural-social-economic 'distance' to rationalise their own deficiencies and insecurities.  Too many of these sales/service people are ignorant of their own history or they would understand the amount of damage colonialism did to native populations. If I receive undeserved poor treatment at any establishment I would never ever give them any business again and I would tell everyone who cares to hear about it either in person or via social media.

Personally, I would never reward bad behaviour.  It proves nothing.  These people get commissions especially from the sales of luxury goods.  I wouldn't give them my business. There are always, ALWAYS other options and there are many more Thais and other Asians who will treat you well than those who won't.  Over this past year I have made many good Thai friends from different walks of life who have helped me, supported me, tolerated me - for no economic benefit to themselves -  and they are the ones whom I will choose to remember and keep in touch with when I leave.

Seriously, how were you able to verify his age without an ID card?

A friend from Sg visited recently and he wanted to take a boy off from one of the go go bars and the guy didn't have ID.  I was acting as interpreter and wasn't entirely convinced that he was 19 as he claimed.  My friend decided against taking the boy off, tipped him nicely and we left.  My friend seemed disappointed that I didn't give the boy the 'all-clear' but I told him it's better to be safe than sorry.  He has a good job and life back home and any hint of impropriety of this sort and he's finished.

a tragic followup from the Songkhla news story, breaking news  from Pattaya Today, Wednesday 23 August:

A reader of a notorious gay sex tourist forum was found late Wednesday night with his throat slashed. An unidentified man wearing a Nazi flag and excess jewelry was detained at the scene reportedly with blood on his hands and mumbling "It was his fault, I warned him not to demonize me"

BDSM doesn't always have to be hard work.  A straight farang acquaintance in CM says he has a "friend" (isn't it always) who would 'off' a few boys and get them to come over to his place where he'll be dressed in baby clothes, complete with bonnet, large diapers and a rubber nipple in his mouth  He will get the boys to spank him after which he will suck the boys as they rough him up a little..kind of like simulated rape.  And as a finale...wait for it...he will climb into a purpose-built, adult-sized baby cot, lie down, make baby sounds and the boys will surround him, jerk off and cum all over him!

In the words of Gaybutton, I don't make these things up, folks!

I don't think Thailand has ever claimed to be a developed country.  It is a developing country as you say.

Is it so bad to go to the immigration office every months?  I would think it's a good thing to stay visible with the authorities and to establish a rapport with them.  I've found Thai officialdom to be very friendly and helpful.  No, I don't expect the cold efficiency that I get back home where everything is cut and dry.  I don't know about you but I'm beginning  to enjoy the flexibility of the Thai system and how the 'human touch' still carries a great deal of weight in how things get/are done.  OK, the 'Baht touch' helps but we have to pay our way for almost everything in Singapore too; the only difference is that we get a receipt.
