After fifteen days, this is my last night in Rio.
I agree with mixer17.  I also love the beach and I cannot bring myself to take Rio out of rotation, even if the GP scene is a roll of the dice.
Earlier in this thread I joined the Rio/117 critics after a depressing, terrible Tuesday at 117. But, tonight (another Tuesday) 117 had a dazzling array of hunks, models, and cuddle bunnies. I had three awesome sessions.

Tuesday reminder tip:
If you arrive by 4 or 4:30, you can snag your preferred pal and get a jump on the queue for free rooms. The queue started tonight a little after 6:00.

Update on new sauna Lux:
Lux was going strong on Friday. Saturday it was packed with even more clients and GPs.  Lively, genuinely fun, upbeat atmosphere all weekend. Music was actually played at a tolerable level so you could talk without yelling. Steam room has been adjusted so it is hot but not scalding.  Happily, no lip-sinking while I was there. One phenomenal live singer only sang a couple of songs but both were dazzling. I met the owner who seems like a really nice guy. GPs tended to be more nice-looking "boy next door" types (not Iberian Idols as I called them elsewhere) but a few were more muscled.  As you'd expect in the far south of Brazil, they are mostly, but not entirely, a pale to olive mix. Rooms come with lots of gel and condoms on the table included in the 50 per hour price and have large bath rooms with hot, strong showers. I was not charged for the occasional extra towel. Some GPs will accept 100 without blinking an eye, but 150 might get you a more enthusiastic session. Suggestions if heading to Porto Alegre:
Focus your itinerary on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Thursday could be OK too but hit or miss. Depart Monday when both GP saunas are closed, unless of course you've lined up a carefully screened hotel visitor. Go to Lux early (by 5) on Saturday before it gets crowded and the top-tier GPs get exhausted. Don't announce that you are a short-term visitor. I find the prospects that you might be a longer-term repeating customer elevates you to the Platinum level for customer service. And of course you indeed may come back for more. I sure do.

I would add that you can also go there on a saturday nite if you like really wild parties ...
It is funny to see evolution of fees : 20R$ back in 2012 (but it was a boy at a saturday party who was willing to get some R$ to buy booze) ; 60 R$ in 2018 and 100 R$ in 2023. This last amount is for a really cute lad with a very good body and face and who bottomed. I would say that, depending on the boy, fee there could be between 60 to 100.

Getting to this sauna is for experienced travellers, not for rookies.

It is weirdly good to see that "it's not just me." I'm in Rio now and disappointed at how sad the GP situation has become at 117 and 202. Months ago I prepaid both my hotel and onward flight to São Paulo or I would race to Lagoa right away.

Took the bus from airport to Place Taksim where most of the gay clubs and action are. Went to a small pleasant hotel in the area. Since I was looking at a map, many people asked me where I was going, where I was coming from and finally one even took me to the hotel. Turkish people are very friendly.
Istanbul is an amazing city. People are very pleasant. Strange mixture of Europe and Asia, of strong and soft islam. Lots of places to visit, to see, to feel. Loved it !
Hagia Sophia (Holy Sophia) in particular was stunning. Incredible result of a former catholic cathedral which was transformed into a muslim mosque, one of the most difficult problem to solved was to have the mosque looking towards the Mecqua ...
As for gay places, I started by Taksim square and Park since it is a well known pick up place. Around the square and in the park, on the Bosphorus side.
Indeed some hustlers are clearly visible. I was approached by 2. Did not approach any for 2 reasons :
- they were ugly - sorry, but there no different world. Poor face, poor body. Of course no English is spoken. One was more or less ok, but not at all my type. Of course I have no clue of how much they ask.
- there is a large police station in the park and the park and the square are permanently (day and night) patrolled by policemen. There are stories on internet of people having approached a lad there and being arrested by the police, only because they were starting to speak and they were not turkish ... There are also stories of a guys having been followed a cute lad to the bushed in Taksim park and being attacked and robbed, or another story of a man having taken 2 guys back to his hotel to be first fucked then robbed.
Gay activities are really underground is Istanbu, it seems. Many internet sites are not available: it is the case of gayromeo and, even if I had wished, I could not have taken a contact with one or two models who were there. Generally speaking, all turks are presenting themselves as only active, only only top. Only some queenie models seem to admit they can be passive.
Other internet sites which are not available are porn sites, such as Seancody.
Turkish Baths (Hammams)
A policy to fight against cruising places seems to have been implemented since 2007 and most of too openly gay hammams were indeed closed. At the moment, there is not any gay exclusive Turkish hammam in Istanbul. But there are few bath houses the gay men would go very often. The owners and managers of them do not want to be displayed on gay websites and keep sending to the webmasters e-mails for that. Finding a list of these sites is not easy ...
Following the advice from Maleire, and after having read some recent negative comments, I decided not to go to Aquarius.
I managed to find one hammam. Very hard to find. Very old building (hammam opened in 1445). It is called Firuzawa Hamami on Cukur Kuma 6.
I did not know what I was to find inside ...
You enter the place, can rent a room or go to the general lockers, which I did, receive flip flops and a cloth. You undress and you go in the hammam, which is composed of a very hot place, with a large marble plate which is heated at rather high temperature, surrounded by small basins where hot and cold water can flow.. There is another room, a shower room, a "cold" room, and another room with a sauna.
I was offered a massage which I accepted not knowing which type of massage it would be. I explained only that I needed it later. I wished to see what was going on before with other patrons !
Of course, in this hamman, no one really spoke English. However people are very much welcoming you.
When I entered the hot part of the hammam, many people were already lying on the hot marble surface. One was being massaged with a hard on visible under his cloth. The employee soaped him and massage him everywhere, insisting on the crotch and the ass. Then I know which type of massage I wanted.
The employee, at least in this particular case did not go all the way to the happy endind. I wonder if they go. Certainly not in public areas.
No Rentboys in the place, but hot action in the cold room. All people wanking and sucking. Most patrons are between 30 and 50. I was surprised because most of the patrons had rather small dicks, even in full erection. It was well-known in Algeria where the colonizers who preceded the French, were the Turks.

Pedra do Telegrafo 
There are many rocks around Rio de Janeiro from where the view is spectacular. The pedra do Telegrafo is one of them. It is located 50 km from Rio, not too far from the Grumari beach. 
You can go there and to the nearby beaches renting a car or go with uber or taxi. 
You can start from the beach Praia da Barra da Guaratiba (1 hour one way) or start from the parking lot (40 minutes one way).
Avoid going there during the week ends : lots of people go there and you may have to wait quite a long time to make the picture that everyone wants to make ... and that a photographer present locally can make for you (10 R$). 

If you are bored to go to the beaches in Copacabana and Ipanema, you can go visit other beaches nearby. There are quite a lot ! 

All beaches in Barra da Tijuca, Recreio, Pontal, Macumba and Secreto and partly Grumari are sand beaches. From Grumari, it is sand and rocks.
Abricó is the only nudist beach in Rio. With Prainha, it is for me the nicest.

Praia de Abricó
It is relatively small. During week days you can keep your clothes pn if you want. During week ends, you must remove all clothes. A guard might remind you this obligation.
Some action may occur near the rocks or on the nearby trail later in the day.

Man arrested in Rio suspected of killing European tourist

The Military Police of Rio de Janeiro arrested a 42-year-old man suspected of killing a tourist from Georgia, in a hotel in Lapa, in the center of the capital.
According to the PM, Wallace de Oliveira was arrested on Tuesday (30), in the act, with the help of witnesses. With the suspect, the police seized documents and cards of the victim.
Wallace de Oliveira has nine passages through the police.
Ilia Kakhaberidze, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in the Lapa neighborhood. His body was tied up and had signs of violence.
According to witnesses, the tourist arrived at the hotel accompanied by the suspect. 
Four hours later, Wallace left the scene. Employees suspected the attitude, went to the room and found Ilia dead.
His body was taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML) in Rio and the case is being investigated by the Homicide Police Station of the Capital as robbery (robbery followed by death).
Ilia Kakhaberidze was a ship engineering officer and worked on board.
To CNN , the Honorary Consul of Georgia in São Paulo, Carmen Ruette, informed that the Consulate is aware of what happened to the citizen of the European country and that the Embassy of Georgia in Brasilia is acting in the case.
For its part, the Embassy of Georgia in Brazil informed CNN that it is aware of what happened and has already made contact with the victim's relatives.
Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was doing what it could to help transport the body to its home country.
 

I normally stay at hotel Heritage rua Fernando de Albuquerque, 5 minutes walk from Lagoa. Very convenient and nice hotel. Never experienced any problem walking bat fter Lagoa. Mestiço restaurant in the same street is quite nice also. 

I did that many times in Brazil. It is no problem. Waze is a big help since it informs you in advance in which lane you should be. I posted recently about trip to the beaches (Abrico and others)

Another observation was how interesting it was to watch all these (ostensibly) straight guys hanging out, watching a soccer match, and just fluffing their dicks. 
 
At Lagoa you could tell which garotos were gay or straight by which tv they parked in front of to fluff themselves. (There’s a straight porn TV on the second floor and a gay porn one on the third.)

Hey, since this is my first trip to Brazil I thought I'd give a report of what my experience has been like as a newcomer. 
Started off with a week in São Paulo. Was going to stay at a lovely Airbnb in Consolação but when I got there the owner didn't respond to me when I tried to check in. Ended up having to get Airbnb to refund me and getting a crappy little room at the Ibis Budget Frei Caneca (which was more expensive than the Airbnb), since I knew I wanted to be close to Lagoa. 
So I went to Lagoa several days. As a first-timer, I was impressed with the number and quality of the guys there. I also felt like it was relatively clean, compared to for example Sauna Thermas in Barcelona. I would post up in the bar reading a book and drinking a beer, enjoyed that they had the glass shower next to the bar. The men there were friendly but not too pushy, which I appreciated. I ended up having 3 programas total at Lagoa. I'm a bottom who prefers big guys with big dicks, and I prefer BB but I didn't bother asking as I assumed most of these guys would not be open to it. All three guys quoted 300 reais, and I didn't negotiate. (I guess that is the going rate in SP, but when I was in Rio they all charged 200.) Funnily enough, the guy I was most attracted to was the bar manager (hot as fuck). It was convenient staying nearby as I could just pop over for an hour or two to see what the crowd was like and have a beer before going out somewhere else.
While in SP I also hit up a couple other places. I went to Bar Queen and Hot House, both of which had fun strip shows. I have now learned that in Brazil basically every strip show includes this very bizarre (to me) specific thing where the guys do their striptease, then leave the stage for a drag number or another stripper, and then they come back out with a hardon in underwear, and they walk around the room and have one customer take their underwear off, then they go to the next customer and hand them their underwear to put it back on. They go around the whole room doing that. I thought it was a funny thing the first time I saw it at Bar Queen, but literally every strip show I went to had that.
I also found that the same strippers were showing up over and over. I saw the same ones at Bar Queen, Hot House, and Lagoa. Makes sense, if you're doing this as your main gig you're going to do multiple shows a night/week. Since I've seen so many of my favorite Brazilian pornstars show up at Hot House on their social media, I was hoping to get to see some of them. Unfortunately none of them made any appearances while I was there. 
I also had a session with Rico Marlon at his apartment. He was incredibly hot in person and just the sweetest guy. I saw him out on the street twice in Consolação afterwards and both times he stopped me to say hello.

I did some exploring downtown, and found the Galeria do Rock (a full shopping mall of all streetwear, hip hop, and rock music stores) interesting, but in general this (around Praça República and Sé) is where I felt the least safe while I was in SP. I probably will avoid next time I'm in town. The areas I really did enjoy were along Avenida Paulista, where there are (mostly free) museums on basically every block, and on the weekend they shut the avenue down to cars so it becomes a pedestrian and bikeway, and Pinheiros, which has so many different little shops and restaurants to stumble on. Also worth walking around Parque Ibirapuera, and across the bridge to the Contemporary Art Museum. I did go to Restaurant Spot because of the recommendations on this board, and it was indeed delicious.
I mainly used public transit, because I love public transit, and found it safe and pretty easy to navigate. The metro is a bit weird in that if you're not a resident, you can't get a card, so you have to go to the ticket booth and buy individual tickets, which are basically little receipts with QR codes on them.
Overall, outside of the República and Sé areas, I felt pretty safe the whole time I was there. It probably helps that I'm a larger guy, and not to be classist, but in general whenever there were a lot of middle-class people around going about their lives, that to me signified that they were choosing to be there and they felt safe.
I flew from SP to Rio on Saturday. I took the light rail and metro to my hotel in Copacabana, and my first impression of the city was that it was bizarrely dead. Both on Saturday and Sunday when I was in the downtown area, it felt like I was in a postapocalyptic movie where there was just no one around, and I did feel a bit vulnerable. But once I got to Copacabana it was clear where everyone had gone. I stayed at the Mercure Boutique Rio Copacabana, which was both inexpensive and lovely. Located right on the beach. I didn't try to have guests over to either of my hotels, but I don't think it would have been a problem at either of them. Just walk right on by the front desk to the elevators and scan my card to go up. 
I went to 117 multiple nights. Usually took the metro there as it's very conveniently located a few minutes' walk from the Gloria station, and in an area that is bustling with locals and feels very safe. The first thing that struck me is that it did feel noticeably dingier than Lagoa. And the second thing that struck me is that several guys whom I'd seen at Lagoa all came up and said hi. I guess a lot of the guys go back and forth between the two. When I first got there (around 5 on a Saturday) I thought it was empty other than the guys hanging out in the front hallway. I had a drink at the inside bar, and then noticed the sign for the smoking bar. Went out there and there were like 25 garotos hanging out out there. I had no idea. 
117 definitely had a higher proportion of my type of guys than Lagoa did. In total I had 4 programas there, 2 of which were with the same guy. A tall, bearded Black man with big muscles and tattoos. We had to wait a bit for a room, and he made out with me while we did. One of the best kissers I've ever met. Super great in bed — I did find his dick a little odd, it was big, hard and felt great, but it also felt a little lopsided, like a silicone injection gone wrong maybe? 
I did go on their big night (Tuesday) and it was indeed packed, but not noticeably more so than Saturday. The staff were very helpful and friendly — at one point my key fell off my strap and got lost, and they took care of it, helped me move my stuff to another locker. My biggest annoyance at 117 was how loud the music was during the drag shows and strip shows. My apple watch immediately notified me it was too loud, and I had to plug my ears, otherwise it was painful. As I sit here typing this the next day I have tinnitus. 
I also went to Point 202 for their big Monday night. Point is very conveniently located in Copacabana, but compared to Lagoa and 117 it is a shithole. It felt so much dirtier and I felt gross the whole time I was there. Even on their "busy" night it was really dead. There was, however, an incredibly hot, muscular latino guy with a baby face wearing a "massagista" shirt. I asked him for a massage, and for 150 reais I got a long, very legitimate feeling massage, with some sensual elements. He performed it in his underwear, and that combined with the massagista shirt made me think he was not a garoto, but after he finished and I took a look at him I was like "you are incredibly sexy," and his response was "oh do you want to have sex?" I was not expecting that and it threw me off and I said no thanks, but looking back on it he was by far the hottest guy from the whole trip and I should have said yes. 
I'd planned to go to a dance/sex party called Hole on my last night, but I developed a bit of a cough and decided to stay in. (I brought my own covid tests and have tested negative so far, plus I had covid 2 months ago so it's probably not that.) So I didn't really get a feel for the gay scene in Rio outside of 117 and 202, sadly. 
The rest of my Rio time included trips back downtown during the week, at which point it was waaaaaaaay busier, to work and go to the Museo do Amanhã, which is very interesting architecturally if not so interesting exhibit-wise. I also checked out the Metropolitan Cathedral, which is very interesting, as well as taking the Bonde de Santa Teresa, which is a nice ride, but not much to do up there. Cristo Redentor was exhausting and IMO not worth the trip. I bought "skip the line" tickets via Viator, and took the Corcovado train up. That was interesting, and then you get to the top and there are SO MANY PEOPLE. The views are great, I'll give it that. But getting back down was a shitshow. The line for the train (which you could not skip on the way back down) went halfway up the stairs to the statue. I'd estimate I waited about an hour to get on a train back down, and by the time I did I had to go back to the hotel and take a nap.
I also checked out the Museum of Modern Art (not worth it in my opinion), and walked around Leblon in Ipanema, which is a much nicer area than Copacabana, with lots of shops and restaurants, and where I'd consider staying next time. I'm not much of a beach person, so I just took a lot of walks up and down the sidewalk next to the beaches, stopping for drinks and food at the many beachside bars and restaurants, and peoplewatching. I never actually touched the sand. I had thought about renting a car to go to Abricó Beach, which is a nude beach outside of Rio, but driving in a foreign country seemed unnecessarily stressful so I decided against it.
In terms of food, my hotel had a great restaurant in it, Q Ceviche, and I went to O Grego twice because it's open late (12 AM) and was delicious. I did go to Fogo de Chão and the meat was my least favorite part. It just wasn't very flavorful. I much preferred the salad bar, which actually had a tray of pork belly with crackling, which was the best meat by far.
Both of my hotels had The Coffee stands nearby, which is very convenient because ordering is done via an iPad which makes it much easier than speaking to a cashier. I found myself going to The Coffee over any other coffee place around the city because of this.
One thing that did make an impression on me is how gay Brazil is. I've seen so many gay couples holding hands walking down the street, even outside of gay areas. The first two times I turned on the TV I saw a drag queen and a gay love scene. There are antidiscrimination notices all over, and on the metro there's an ad for a show called Tunnel of Love that has straight and gay couples making out. I didn't realize how openly gay friendly Brazil is, especially with all the terrible things I'd heard from Bolsonaro.
And overall, everything here is just so inexpensive. A nice dinner rarely cost me more than $40. I'd spend 3-4 hours drinking at Lagoa or 117 for $30. I had 9 sessions with men, including a pornstar, for the same price as 2 would have been in the US. Ubers cost between $5 and $10, even with surge pricing. 
Overall, I've had a great trip and I'm excited to come back. Since it's only an hour ahead of east coast time, it's pretty easy for me to work remotely from here, so I think I may plan to come back for a month or so at some point.

Day 1-3 Sao Paulo
 
As I disembarked my plane in São Paulo, I took in the fresh air, never realizing that a single breath can fill my lungs with so much oxygen. This city is alive and the greenery scattered across the city are lungs, transporting vitality into every weary traveler into Brazil. 
 
My plane arrived at 6 AM. Instead of begging for an early check in at the hotel front desk, I used the Dayuse app and spent $40 on a hotel room at the city center from 9 AM - 6 PM. It was the perfect location because I had many tasks to run today. First matter of the day is to get a sim card. I took an uber to the Frei Caneca Shopping Center, booked via the hotel internet. Once there, if I don’t get a sim card, then I have no way of booking an uber to the hotel!
 
My first stop was Loja Vivo, where two employees claim that their system is down for today but maybe will be up tomorrow. My Portuguese sucks so much that I can’t call them on their bullshit. As the saying goes “immigrants, we get the job done.” I went with plan B, the Claro store. 4 employees were working but none would even acknowledge me. When I finally got their attention, the lady asked if I had a CBF?
 
Surprise Motherfucker!!! I made the effort to get a CBF before coming to Brazil. When I presented her with a print out copy of my CBF card, the lady said it is not good. I don’t understand her reason, again my Portuguese sucks. My heart dropped. 
 
I must have looked very sad. One employee took pity on me, she told me to go to the American store on the 3rd floor and buy a sim card and then she could set me up using only my passport. 10r for the sim card and 30r for 12 gig data, a Brazilian phone number, and ability to text. Woot woot, achievement unlocked! Gold Chest appears! To celebrate, 2 starbucks donuts to the lady and none to the other witches. 
 
Day 1-3 is filled with exploration, food, and working up the courage to go to Lagoa. I will jump ahead to what y’all want to read in the next update.

I organized a 2 day trip in Brasilia to see the city and its monuments. Worth a visit, but only one IMHO. After seeing buildings erected, I tried to see other erctions and went to one of the 2 saunas with boys in Brasilia.
Arrived there around 5.30 pm. As I was obviously new, one guy showed me ghe facility : changing room, shower, bar, smoking room, darkroom, video room.
He also explained me that guys wearing a blue towel are rent boys. All others with white towel are customers.
The place is rather clean. Cabins though are filthy since there is only a plastic cover. One must use his towel as a sheet. Cabins are free.
I stayed until 8.30 pm but only saw 5 boys. Very average type. Most customers obviously come to meet other customers, not to meet rentboys. Some action in the darkroom.
I was too tired and without sufficient motivation yo wait until live sex show which is held later on saturdays.
Nothing to compare with 117 in Rio or Lagoa in SP.
