Num could have been a make-believe character or it could have been a sobriquet that the blogger assigned to his friend (boyfriend?) to protect their privacy. Num or หนุม literally means young man and is a very common pen/nickname in Thailand for males. (Interestingly, the nickname doesn't change when they get old!) For the same reason, Num, if he did exist, may have worked at another bar. Protecting his privacy seemed to have been the right thing to do as you went to track him down! But, seriously, you became depressed over this?

I hope I didn't put you off, Olddaddy. I think you can find something for 2 million baht in Pattaya, just not in the location you want and not with a sea view. Renting while you scout around for something more permanent is a good idea and try renting during the months in which you haven't been in Pattaya previously so that you'll get a better picture of what Pattaya is like all-year round. Pattaya can feel quite different during the high season which can last up to five months.

Totally agree with this. You need somebody firm, with authority and preferably a stake in the business to be on premise keeping an eye on things at all times, or at the very least during peak hours. Also, you need to know every aspect of the business inside and out and be able to fill in for any operational shortcoming. The F&B business can be very lucrative in SE Asia because of relatively lower overheads and labour costs but it is VERY hard work with no respite. I've seen several successful restaurants here and in Bangkok go belly up because the owners became complacent or were expanding beyond capacity, leaving the clueless staff to manage.

It's a huge cabaret type entertainment extravaganza with singing, dancing, acrobatic displays, etc. I believe he's partnered and is rumoured to have a wealthy benefactor - can't remember whether it's Thai or Chinese (although this may have changed). He's tertiary educated and good at what he does, as some of you have seen. Broadly speaking, the hot, college-educated ones working at local type venues get snapped up pretty quickly by Thai or other Asian sponsors.

You're overthinking. Firstly, what do you consider to be middle class? It is a somewhat broad and not very useful label without further qualification. I have plenty of Thai friends who would describe themselves as middle class and travel at least once a year, including to various parts of the northern hemisphere. Secondly, why would they even care enough to resent you and what do you imagine they'd do to you that's borne out of this supposed resentment?

Think. To whom were they speaking? You're American, aren't you, living right in the middle of the scene in Pattaya? The response could have been different had the question been posed by a Chinese person to a bunch of non-scene, professional Thai guys.

Unlikely in Jomtien or Na Jomtien. Perhaps in Nakleua or Pattaya Tai. No ocean view. Even a 45 sqm studio with a decent ocean view (which you can split into a bedroom and tiny living room) in one of the View Talays would cost you upwards of 2.5 million. Personally I like Pattaya Tai, Nakleua and parts of Central Pattaya as it's got more of a local vibe. The apartments in the newer developments in Thailand are becoming tinier and tinier with one-bedroom units coming in at 30 sqm! What I've never understood is why there are only one or two tiny bedrooms in some of the bigger units. Just for fun, we checked out a 200 sqm unit in Pratamnak which was on the market during our recent visit and it had two smallish bedrooms and and one bathroom! The rest of it was just unused open space. It's a shame because it had a great ocean view. Here an apartment of that size would come with at least three comfortably sized bedrooms, three bathrooms and a helper's room. What am I going to do with all that unused space? I don't like entertaining at home - too much work and people tend to overstay their welcome. When we do entertain it's either at a restaurant or the club where everything is taken care of and we ourselves come as guests.
