Look back at what the rejected party said in context: "...he wasn't interested in foreigners". It was the rejected party's interpretation of things, exchanged in an app with apparently a young Taiwanese. We don't know exactly what was said. My understanding is that one is lucky to receive a reply at all or not blocked outright in the world of online hook-ups if the other party isn't interested. Secondly, your polite rejections may be well and good when declining an invitation to tea with someone of your generation and of your cultural and linguistic background, but we are talking about a totally different context here. The object of interest is a young Taiwanese chatting on a gay hook-up app who may not be familiar with the subtleties and connotations of the English language and conversational etiquette of someone of your generation. Instead of thinking like an older, insular American, try putting yourself in someone else's shoes; in this case, someone much younger and from a different cultural and linguistic background to yours. By the way, "I have a boyfriend already" would be a strange comeback on a hook up app and a real slap in the face. 😅 And who knows, maybe the young man in question had had bad experiences with foreigners, especially annoying ones who can't take no for an answer or let things go (no one from this forum, I'm sure🙄) and felt that the direct approach was best. I guess whether one thinks it's polite or not depends on how well one handles rejection and granted many people handle it poorly. I think using a broad shorthand like "I don't date foreigners" provides the rejected party with the opportunity to save face, allowing him to attribute the rejection to cultural incompatibility (or he can fill in the blanks himself) instead of some physical or social shortcoming on his part. Imagine if the Asian guy had said, "Sorry, I don't date fat, old, long-winded, white bores with a poor sense of style and terrible shoes. Snap!" 😱Now that would have been impolite indeed.

It may just be a quick and polite way of giving someone they're not interested in the brush off, without having to think too much for an excuse. And they may already have plenty of options within their own circles, so not being interested in foreigners isn't necessarily limiting.

When "later this year" and how long are you going to be in Bangkok? Things may change within a short period of time and expectations and experiences with a certain masseur and/or venue may vary with different clients. It's a good idea to have a general itinerary but you may end up disappointed if you're hoping to get everything just right.

Having met him a few times, I'd say he's very outgoing and motivated and not someone who'd be contented sa-leeping all day. He wasn't at all inhibited strutting and shaking his stuff in his tiny red Aussiebum undies that evening. Hence I was surprised to see him describe himself as shy and introverted above and I feel meeting and getting to know someone in person is best.
