In shops with minimum tips (800-1,000 range), I rarely get asked how much for climax. It’s generally understood by all that the tip is inclusive.

I typically give an extra few hundred baht for exceptional performance, especially if I intend to repeat with same guy. 

in shops with no minimum, I tip in the same range.

If the shops at Saphan Kwai are only expecting 800 to 1000 baht, why do guys at Soi 6 expect much more?

Exactly. I just carry 1000's and 100's and always tip minimum 1000 if special services (for me, not special for them haha) and throw in a few 100 more if they (a) don't discuss money during the massage and (b)  provide above and beyond services (showering me, hug at end, generally happy environment.) I have been to the same masseur twice and had totally different experiences on multiple occasions. Sometimes the stars align and sometimes they don't...

Two things come to mind.

first, I think we want to pay them in line with service rendered. And in Soi 6, where the guys are in the shops for 10+ hours a day, it’s their full-time job. In S K, it’s on call. We get to know the guys on 6 on a more personal basis and more likely to tip well.

Second, guys on 6 can’t count on any minimum and their tips vary widely. I was getting leg massage one night last week. There were two customers from China in the chairs on either side of me. I tipped 1000 while the two other customers tipped 100 and zero. Go figure.

I think you mean if the boys at Saphan Khwai are only expecting... (not the shops).

In addition to @reader's first point about the boys not having to spend the whole day waiting around, the shops in Saphan Khwai are largely aimed at the local market, so the boys working there adjust their expectations accordingly. I also have the feeling, based on my visits and attempts to book that the boys in Saphan Khwai get more business (two clients a day?) than the boys in Silom 6.

@reader's second point is also germane. The Saphan Khwai shops position themselves more as knocking shops / brothels, and make clear a minimum tip that is for sex. The local market by and large understands what the business is about. The Silom 6 shops still largely pretend to be massage shops. They do not set minimum tips commensurate with sexual services, leaving the boys to negotiate their own tips and if the boys don't do that, there is a risk of undertipping by clueless foreigners. So, if the boys are going to negotiate, they might as well aim high.

I'd say Saphan Kwai shops are aiming at lower , off the mill local market. There are Plsces like Jey Spa or Googuy which are also aiming at local market but higher end of if.

If a masseur interrupts a massage to ask for a 2000 baht tip, not only is the price going down but so is my cock.

Yes, you are right. The local market is also a wide price spectrum, at the upper end of which we call the "Hi-So" market. Clients there give 10,000-baht garlands to gogo boys and pay eye-watering prices for 60- or 90-minutes of fun.
