not common, but not unheard off either.

I think over years I reported at least 4 cases of bar boys who asked me to take them for short trip and all they asked was to pay expenses on the road and their bar fees. One was even so desperate to to have a break  that even offered to pay his off fees to his bar. One Bangkok boy visiting his parents in Cambodia upon learning I'm in Siem Reap also asked  to visit me  there and all he wanted  is to pay for his bus fare.  I still paid them my usual overnight tip but with exception of one , it was clear,  judging by reaction, that they did not expect that.

I still would ask  your boy " can I give you some money ? " as chances are he could be counting on you being bit more generous that just  covering expenses but , yes he could be with you because he liked you and wanted some break.

Some money boys play the long game, I see this in Bali A LOT (used to see it in Thailand years ago). In the end they get more than if they were getting a daily fee, the feeling of  being "loved" plays with hearts and wallets... and in the end, they end up with gifts, trips, great restaurants and in the end, doing less work (sex).

Or maybe he likes you.... let us know how it ends or if later requests for money show up.
