So far the sales of bee at the Super Bowl have proceeded well. There is little chance that vendors will run out of supplies, and patrons also remain sober, at least at this point. No evidence has been seen that cocaine is being sol, although it is possible that some entered the stadium with it in their possession. Cocaine sales usually peak for the after-game parties.

From the wardrobe malfunction to The Rolling Stones. Who was your favorite Superbowl performance? Mine would be a tie between Whitney Houston and Cher doing the National Anthem. Tomorrow night Kelly Clarkson is doing the National Anthem and I think she will kill it (compared to last year's Aguilera fiasco). 20 memorable performances here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/31/super-bowl-halftime-show-most-memorable-super-bowl-performaces_n_1244981.html?ref=entertainment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupsPg5H6aE

  6. 2 gays: We were jailed in Ohio without our pants By THOMAS J. SHEERAN | Associated Press CLEVELAND (AP) — Two gay men who say they were punched and pinned to the ground by an off-duty police officer before being called offensive names and jailed without their trousers have sued the city and its police over what they call anti-gay bias. Steven Ondo and Jonathan Simcox said the off-duty officer, who was a neighbor, complained about a noisy argument on the street and attacked them last April and had them arrested. A week later, they said, they were arrested by SWAT officers and were punched again at their home while lounging in T-shirts and underpants. They said the…

At the end of 2011, both Amazon and Barnes & Noble had online sales, and I bought 16 books for some $60. I like thriller novels, and one that caught my attention is Danger Close, by William G. Boykin (and Tom Morrisey), which means that Morrisey wrote it and capitalized on Boykin's name. I wouldn't have known who Boykin is, except that he made the news this week when his invitation to speak at West Point was hastily withdrawn after coming into controversy. Or, should I say that Boykin is controversial? Here's the story from the NY Times: General Boykin, a longtime commander of Special Operations forces, first caused controversy after the Sept. 11 attacks when, as a …

Anyone else here use MyHabit.com? They are owned by Amazon and have daily specials on men's and women's "designer" clothing and other items. I've picked up a few t-shirts from them, but the thing I really like is how they let you view videos of models wearing the clothing for sale. For example, if you're interested in a men's shirt on sale, you click the item, and you are presented with a short video of a model standing and turning in the shirt. It's pretty cool. Unfortunately, they don't provide videos for underwear sales

Again. My dentist is doing a crown, and thought I had best get a root canal before the permanent crown went on. So she referred me to another dentist in the plan. Lucky for me I checked my coverage first. I got there and they wanted $483 in extra charges. Only $100 of it was presented as optional, and that was the rip-off $100 for an antibiotic treatment. The other charges were not clear, except the $58 for consultation, which my insurance also covers at 100%. So, I had to leave without getting a root canal. But I am filing a complaint with the California Dental board. Why can't people just be honest businessmen?

  13. Creepy new anti-privacy bill being considered by Hawaii legislature Bill would create a database detailing who visits what websites by Fox Van Allen | Last updated 5:32PM EST on January 26, 2012 In what is only the latest attempt at government intrusion on internet users' privacy, the Hawaii State Legislature is currently debating a bill that would create a massive database of what state residents visit which websites. If passed, it would be the most wide-reaching anti-privacy web initiative in the country. The bill, H.B. 2288, was introduced by State Rep. John Mizuno (D). According to the bill's official description, it "requires internet service providers to keep co…

  14. Internet providers will enforce copyright with lenient new "6 strikes" rule A new agreement between ISPs and the entertainment industry looks kindly on customers by Taylor Hatmaker | Last updated 2:10PM EDT on July 7, 2011 While illegal downloading may be on the decline, copyright infringement is still a thorn in the side the entertainment industry — and for anyone who's been in its crosshairs. Many major U.S. internet service providers (ISPs) just signed onto a voluntary agreement that outlines the terms of cooperation when it comes to cracking down on their own customers, and it sounds a bit like the customer is always right — at least for the first 6 wrongs. Under …

Stop right there: EU halts Google's new privacy policy The EU data protection authority calls for Google to halt the new policy's March implementation by Fox Van Allen | Last updated 11:50AM EST on February 3, 2012 Google's intrusive new privacy policy has raised quite a few eyebrows here in the United States, but it's making even more waves in the EU. There, a joint regulatory commission of all 27 European nations has called for the web search giant to halt the implementation of its new privacy rules slated to go into effect March 1, 2012. Data privacy in Europe is monitored by The Article 29 Working Party, a collective of government privacy authorities from the EU m…

  17. Super Bowl bust: U.S. government seizes 307 domains for violating NFL copyrights By Mike Wehner, Tecca | Today in Tech Target sites assumed guilty until proven innocent under U.S. law While many sports fans are preparing for Sunday's Super Bowl by organizing parties and shopping for TVs, the U.S. government is preparing in a different way. Just yesterday, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency seized 307 different domains suspected of violating NFL copyrights. Of those, 16 were suspected of illegal streaming. The rest were allegedly selling counterfeit NFL merchandise. The seizure was conducted under U.S. civil law, not criminal law. That means the affe…

Hot on the heels of American Airlines going into Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the strong possibility of eventual flight reductions, the Hungarian National Airline, also part of OneWorld, today collapsed due to financial reasons. It is the second European airline to go under this week following Spain's Barcelona-based Spanair (not part of OneWorld). I wouldn't take any bets on their being the last.

Is living a gay lifestyle a choice? Can one really be either gay or straight more or less at will? Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, who had a 15-year relationship and two children with a man she met in high school before starting a long-term relationship with her present partner Christine Marioni, faced a backlash recently from the gay community when she implied in an interview in the New York Times that being gay was a deliberate choice she had made. As she added, Gay activist and political blogger John Aravosis, along with many in the gay community, strongly disagreed with Nixon’s choice of words. http://www.nytimes.c...ef=cynthiani…

America's Most Miserable Cities, 2012 By Kurt Badenhausen, Forbes.com February 2, 2012 Provided by Miami is a playground for the rich and famous. Celebrities flock to parties at South Beach clubs and then return to their $10 million mansions in Miami Beach and Key Biscayne. It’s a leading city in culture, finance and international trade. But away from the glitz and glamor, many ordinary Miamians are struggling. A crippling housing crisis has cost multitudes of residents their homes and jobs. The metro area has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country and workers face lengthy daily commutes. Add it all up and Miami takes the top spot in our ranking o…

I discovered Google's search engine a good time before others did, and I have stayed loyal, converting to Gmail as soon as I could. But now they own YouTube and the videos have commercials on them. My cute little YouTube user name has given way to my Gmail address. My Gmail now has pop-up ads over my email. And they are changing their privacy policies without the customer having any say at all. Sigh.

Not too long ago, I complained here about the difficulty of finding a regular plug-in keyboard for my desktop computer. Now it's the normal plug-in tabletop landline telephone. Yesterday I kept getting phone calls from people who said they knew that I was on the line, but they heard nothing from my end. I checked by phoning my partner at home from my cell, and sure enough, he could hear me fine, but I heard nothing from him. So today I went out to find a new phone (the old one was more than 20 years old). Staples had only one normal phone model, and it was out of stock. Office Depot had the same one, but in black, which I didn't want. Wal-Mart had the one from Staples, …
