Theater, Movies, Art and Literature

It is dedicated to the Theater, Art and Literature crowd with a dose of music and movies!

I am very late to the Spartacus series, which started on Starz and is now on Netflix. I thought the guy playing Spartacus was really good and very hot. Why isn't he the sexiest man alive? I got to the end of Season 1 and was so happy with an episode I started googling the show. Shock ensued as I learned that actor Andy Whitfield cannot be the sexiest man alive because he isn't...alive. He died of a sudden leukemia after the first season. Here he has his biggest role yet and this hits him. I have yet to see his successor, Liam McIntyre. There is nothing about the show at the other site or here. Given the nudity and eroticism of those loin-clothed gladia…

Wow, I loved this show. It was a bit slow at times but I loved all the drag scenes and performances.

  4. Started by TotallyOz,

OK. I admit I love Riverdale. Plus, gay characters all across the spectrum. This is a new spin off I just saw today. Some interested gay scenes in the trailer and drag.

Another show I am surprised no one has mentioned before. If you are into hard science fiction, you will love it. Spotless production and acting. The first three seasons were SyFy Chanel, Amazon picked up the fourth, all of them are available in Amazon Prime TV. The first two seasons are excellent. The third one is OK. I am watching the 4th. Production and Acting are still impeccable, but the plot is very weakened, as the original premise went blurred. The original premise was very appealing. The game of diplomacy and geopolitics is taken from international to interplanetary. Mars and Earth are two industrialized powers, and the asteroids belt is a raw materials produ…

I think the theater buffs are mostly at the other site, but for what it is worth I will post this. Broadway HD is a streaming channel that has a host of shows, both musicals and plays, along with theater related films. It even has Cirgue Soleil shows. This afternoon I watched a London production of Jerry Springer: The Opera. It's one of my favorites, having seen it in London at the National Theater. (The live show, imo, always beats a televised show.) It was a lot of fun to see again, and I look forward to getting my $8.99 a month out of the channel. That's after my free 7-day trial. broadwayhd.com

I've been binging on it. Lots of blood, guts and gore. I'm almost through with season three and no gay characters yet.

Brazil’s foreign film entry for next Oscars, winner of Un Certain Regard (Cannes 2019). I was fortunate to catch a single screening at a Brazilian film festival. Sublime. Set in Rio de Janeiro roughly 1950-1960 then jumps to modern day for final scenes with Fernanda Montenegro. If you are lucky it will be broadly released or eventually available for streaming. Another winner, Bacurau, is apparently to be released in the new year.

Rest in peace Rene 1940-2019. Boston Legal was perhaps my favorite show of all time.

  10. Started by TotallyOz,

I enjoyed the show and will miss it. I hope they find other shows for the cast members.

  11. Started by Lucky,

Recently I have read a few books of gay interest. My favorite is Someday, Someday. It's a gay romance where two guys struggle with their feelings. That is nothing new, but the author, Emma Scott, does a bang-up job on the story, keeping the reader entranced to the very end. Here's some amazon info about the novel: EVERYONE needs to read this book! Riveting, electric, and poignant. Emma does not waste her words. Every sentence, every line of this story was magic.--Kate Stewart USA Today Bestselling Author How long would you wait for love? Max Kaufman was kicked out of his home as a teen and his life has been an uphill battle ever since. From …

Currently former CIA Director John Brennan is getting some accolades for standing up to Donald Trump. Well, if you watch the ADAM Driver movie The Report on Amazon Prime, you will learn that Brennan is a disgusting liar who tried to cover up all of the torture done by the CIA under Cheney. That's my takeaway from this powerful movie. I'll let a professional reviewer tell you about the movie cuz he can do it much better than I can: From Variety: The Report Director: Scott Z. Burns With: Adam Driver, Annette Bening, Jon Hamm, Ted Levine, Maura Tierney, Michael C. Hall. Release Date: Jan 26, 2019 …

  14. What did people think about the scene in "Special" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_(TV_series)), episode 3, where the star hires an escort to take his virginity? I thought it was sweet. I watched with my daughter and wasn't embarrassed. Good new series on Netflix. I liked it.

My Own Private Idaho My Own Private Idaho is a quirky independent film that occupies a strange space in film history. It remains an important, if flawed film that effectively chronicles a sort of coming of age, even if the outcome is more tragic than self-reflective. Where this film really shines is in documenting just how far the world of male escorts has come over the past 20 years. Released in 1991 - well before the Internet would transform the escort world - the rent boys at the heart of this story live on the streets, barely scraping by, getting $20 a blow job and offering a second date free if the john will simply slip them an extra 10-spot. The authenticity t…

Perhaps I am getting old, but the action was great and just way too many story lines and I hated the end. But, the action was there.

Bluff City Law is a new series on NBC. It is staring Jimmy Smits as one of the leads. I fell in lust with him in LA Law many years ago and have always enjoyed seeing him. The new series is good so far and I like the way it is evolving. I hope the first season keeps going strong.

  24. Started by TotallyOz,

Loving The Godfather of Harlem. It is staring Forest Whitaker. It is based on the gangster Bumpy Johnson.
