  1. That's a good point, I'm not sure if I'd bother with the apps (any apps) if I were a visitor. I do use them elsewhere as a visitor and with quite some success, but in those places I don't have as many alternatives as a visitor to Bangkok has.
  2. Yes, an app can change a system security setting that blocks the screenshot feature while it has the screen. It's super annoying; one of my email apps comes with the same restriction.
  3. Hate the sin, love the sinner.
  4. I've heard many excuses for committing a crime, but the need to get a 3D vagina is a new one to me.
  5. Some ATMs, for example those run by ABA, let you choose the denomination (and even the currency, you could choose riel). That failing, simply withdraw $90 instead of $100 (or $490 instead of $500).
  6. I think that's just a translation of what was originally posted in Thai. Otherwise they could have left out some of the government official dresses. Regardless, floridarob's question in the OP was about tourists, not foreigners in general. Those foreigners who aren't tourists but live in Thailand (myself included) might well be expected to follow the dress code, especially at our workplace or when we have interactions with Thai officials.
  7. On top of their horrible food, their drinking water probably isn't as good as your home filtered version either.
  8. Excellent and very helpful, thanks a lot!
  9. Also, the crowd that eats at the Siam Paragon food court is different from the crowd that eats at a Big C food court. A typical dish might cost 80-90 baht at the former and 40-50 baht at the latter. The assumption that people from all walks of life come together at the same food court to enjoy their meals in happy unison is the kind of stuff fairy tales are made of. The article was specifically about shopping malls, not the supermarket food courts that obviously attract quite a different crowd. Next we could talk about outdoor food courts and we would have reached "strtfd" as pong would call it. My eyes are still hurting.
  10. In all my years in Bangkok, I've seen maybe five male 7/11 workers who would have qualified. Disturbingly, many female 7/11 workers at the branches I frequent are both beautiful and flirty. In Pattaya, on the other hand and despite the fact that I'm an infrequent visitor, I always seem to see cute guys at 7/11. Strange.
  11. I'd be interested in Cebu City, too, so if you don't mind posting it here, that would be great!
  12. Still, the most expensive bottle of alcohol they have seems to be the 450 baht vodka. A visitor "stealing" your whiskey would only cost you 300-330 baht.
  13. And so is not wearing a seatbelt.
  14. Cost of living has been going up a lot in Thailand in the recent past, and "unfortunately" many cuties now have several options for relatively well-paid jobs. So it's hardly surprising that there's a tendency for ST and LT rates that are being demanded to increase as well. Boy69, with the rates you've quoted, you might still get lucky nowadays, but gradually you'll get priced out of the market (well, except for the desperate drug addicts peddling their wares, they will probably still be available for 1000 baht for years to come).
  15. Again I agree with vinapu. reader, we do realize that was the author's opinion, not necessarily yours just because you shared it with us. I'm glad that you posted that piece, so that we could add our two cents worth.
  16. Three out of four. Yes, definitely mostly an American thing.
  17. I'm with vinapu on this one. I think that's a fairy tale, albeit a nice one. Food courts aren't any more democratic than the rest of Thailand and are mostly a middle class affair. Many lower class Thais are very reluctant to visit classy malls in their shabby clothes, and at the other end of the spectrum, business tycoons are also a rare species at food courts.
  18. How did you do that, did you take a regular bus from outside the airport? The airport bus is 30 baht, so that plus the MRT fare would be more than 50 baht (not by much though).
  19. It surprises me, too. I've spoken to quite a few foreigners who own guns in Thailand over the years, but without exception, those were guys married to a Thai woman and the local authority insisted that the gun is registered in the Thai wife's name. I don't know any foreigner who managed to register a gun in his own name - it might not have been illegal outright, but at the very least officials seemed unwilling to do it.
  20. Very nice reports again, vinapu, it was a great pleasure to read about your latest adventures. You definitely made excellent use of your time and didn't waste any.
  21. No, I think williewillie is right, there have always been fakers and keyboard wankers on these platforms, even when I started using them in the West more than 20 years ago. Put in a charitable way, these platforms allow these guys to be whoever they want to be - as long as they can avoid meeting in real life. Nowadays in Thailand, my solution is very simple: Move the conversation to Line early on and have a video chat ASAP. Problem solved.
  22. Why stop there, make it a million and you'll get some headlines worldwide (well, at least in the UK, their papers seem to love that kind of crap)...
  23. You have me confused. That people organize sex parties - in Phuket or anywhere else in the world - isn't public knowledge?
  24. As a general observation, when Thais visit each other they often help themselves to drinks and food and don't wait to be served by their host, at least among family and close friends. A (bar) boy you're "intimate with" might well qualify under that social norm, so in the context of Thailand it might not be as out of line as it would be elsewhere. In the West or at least in the countries I've been to, it's typically different, the host is expected to either serve their guests or to offer them to help themselves. If that doesn't happen and you feel thirsty or hungry, you'd ask before helping yourself to some of their stuff uninvited. That might be an alien concept to Thais less familiar with Western etiquette.
  25. As a tourist, I'd simply refrain from wearing colorful clothes. Whether or not it's a good idea to visit Thailand this month really depends on what kind of vacation one has in mind. Those who are after party and entertainment will probably run into some restrictions.
