Some guys have put together a website called ChristWire that attempts to satirize conservative Christian websites. It's so good that they've actually got conservative Christians sending some of the articles around like "Tax Day - Obama Voters Pay Double" and "Charlie Sheen Goes Crazy - World Of Warcraft To Blame" as though they were real news. http://christwire.org/

One of the presidential candidates in Taiwan was recently asked questions about her sexual orientation. Tsai Ing-Wen, chairwoman of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), refused to answer and lashed out at a former chairman of the party, Shih Ming-the, who had asked her to clarify whether she was gay. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/asia/232212/taiwan-presidential-hopeful-blasts-gay-question On the issue of the Taipei Gay Pride Parade, I tried to find a thread from, I thought, last year, with some rather nice photos of the last Taipei Parade. The Search box came up with nothing. So I’ll post a few photos here. Dates for the 2011 event have not …

Gas-powered cars that get 40 mpg For non-electric, non-hybrid cars, 40 is the new 30 (mpg). By Marco R. della Cava | Yahoo! Autos – Thu, Apr 14, 2011 6:10 PM EDT To put an automotive spin on an old axiom, 40 really is the new 30—in miles per gallon. What’s particularly remarkable is that this impressive highway-mileage figure is increasingly being achieved not only by hybrids and other alt-fuel cars—which post their best numbers in the city—but by regular gasoline-powered vehicles with relatively low price tags. A look at eleven current and forthcoming cars that deliver 40 mpg highway reveals MSRPs ranging from $12,490 (for a two-door Smart car) to around $20,000 (…

Walter Breuning, world's oldest man died on last Thursday. He left something advice for us to think about. — Embrace change, even when the change slaps you in the face. ("Every change is good.") — Eat two meals a day ("That's all you need.") — Work as long as you can ("That money's going to come in handy.") — Help others ("The more you do for others, the better shape you're in.") - Accept death I can't eat only two meals a day though..

From the London Evening Standard: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23941850-gay-rights-protest-at-soho-pub-that-ejected-two-men-for-kissing.do Hundreds of gay rights' protesters are planning a "kiss-in" at a Soho pub today after the landlady kicked out two men for kissing. Tory MP Alan Duncan, who is gay, backed the demonstration at the John Snow against what supporters of the couple claim was a clear example of homophobic discrimination. The group, mobilised on Facebook and Twitter, is planning to hold a demonstration this evening where people lock lips with their partners for up to three hours. Mr Duncan called it a "witty and powerful way of …

But if you're among the applying masses, you probably want to do more than just get a job. You know the economy is bad when you can suddenly rent the entire country of Liechtenstein. It costs $70,000 a night. "The possibilities for customizing the experience are almost endless - rename city streets and town squares, print your own temporary currencies, carve logos or names into the snow on the mountainside - and that is just the tip of the iceberg. The mayors and marching bands can welcome you with a custom medieval festival and present you the key to the city, or perhaps a wine tasting event at a Prince's estate followed by a fireworks show is more your style." http://gawker.com/#!5792172/you-can-rent-the-entire-country-of-liechtenstein

I recall that there was an earlier discussion on the USA Global Entry Program; this is an update. For those not familiar with this program it is a "easy pass" to go thru Immigration and Customs when returning to the USA. Cost about $100 and can be applied for on-line but must appear in person at Immigration at major airport in USA for final clearance. Straightforward except the on-line application process is cumbersome and confusing at times. On my return to the US, two 747s coughed up about 700 passengers all rushing to get in line and cleared thru Immigration. But there was no one at the kiosk for Global Entry and only one crew member in that line. It took about 2…

Be careful if you visit France any time soon. While for years soliciting escorts has not been against the law they are now changing that to make it illegal. So, you know, hit up Spain instead. http://gawker.com/#!5791873/france-may-outlaw-soliciting-prostitution

Coinciding with travelerjim's very useful info on the BA miles offer, there is an excellent article in today's New York Times illustrating how one reporter goes about maximising his miles. It's long and it's a bit difficult to cut it, so I append most of it below, along with all the relevant website details. http://frugaltraveler.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/12/are-your-miles-a-mess-heres-how-to-put-them-to-use/?hpw https://www.usingmiles.com/ http://awardwallet.com/ https://www.delta.com/skymiles/ways_to_get_miles/index.jsp http://thepointsguy.com/ The only caveat I'll add is be careful about using credit cards outside the issuing country. The New Commodore 64, Updated With Its Old Exterior by Nick Bilton Friday, April 8, 2011 Provided by: Commodore USA The Commodore 64 is being re-released for the modern computer user. I was just 6 years old when the Commodore 64 computer went on sale in the summer of 1982. Although I already owned a computer at the time -- a ZX Spectrum -- I remember my excitement about possibly getting my little hyperactive hands on the newly released Commodore. At the time, the Commodore computer cost $595 and came with a whopping 64 kilobytes of memory. It also contained a graphics and sound card that stood apart from other computers of the day. Now, nearly 30 years late…

Is it just me, or does it seem some of our "once regular" posters have been posting much less/not at all lately? Lucky seems much quieter than normal since the Palm Springs weekend. I hope all the activities didn't wear him out too much and cause him to be bedridden. Tomcal seems to be missing in action... Hopefully he wasn't abducted by a band of rogue Sauna Garatos and being held for a ransom of no more than R$50. TownsendePLocke is another one who pops in for a quick word then disappears again for weeks/months at a time.. Eeyore has been silent for awhile now as well.. I hope he didn't get trapped in a Montreal backroom booth with a dancer who doesn't know when t…

The demonstrations affecting the Arab nations have had little ostensible effect in Asia. But there have been small rumblings in China – quickly put down by the government – and more recently in India. As a result of a populist protest led by a 72-year old, the government has announced that it will finally create a new Citizen Ombudsman with sweeping powers to tackle corruption. Anna Hazare had started a “fast unto death” at the beginning of last week. Demonstrators in several cities soon showed their support, carrying flags, candles and banners condemning corruption and demanding that the draft of an earlier proposed bill be widened in its scope because it did not emp…

Did you know that China has more than 1000 manufactures of sex toys? Would you put one in your butt, knowing China's history of bad stuff in their products? Well, consider this: "Many good time gadgets such as anal beads, pliable dildos and other rubberized entertainers are still made of phthalates(*), a material that has been proven to cause kidney, liver and testicular damage in rats." China is not likely to be inspecting dildos for quality, are they? Yet they make $2 billion a year just from stuff we put up our ass. (But most of their dildos are sold to South Africa. The Us only buys 2% of them- so where do we get ours from?) So, next time you buy a dildo or rubber se…
