The New Year has started and we all make our New Year resolutions, which usually last a week or two if we are lucky. What is your new year's resolution? I would like to eat less, exercise more and shed about 10 kilos.

Just a second: 2008 can't end yet Eager to see the back end of 2008? Be forewarned: the world's official timekeeper has decided to prolong the year - by one full second, to be precise. Which means a Champagne-soaked countdown to 2009 something like this: "...THREE, TWO, ONE-AND-A-HALF, ONE... Happy New Year!" The extra second was mandated by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) in Paris, and is not to be taken lightly. Satellites that orbit at speeds calculated in kilometres (miles) per second, the Internet, global positioning systems - all depend on knowing exactly what time it is. IERS head Daniel Gambis announce…

I have been to this place several times with friends. It was not a gay club but very popular with Thais and Westerners alike. It is a true travesty and my thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/...fire/index.html http://bangkokpost.com/topstories/topstories.php?id=135674 Dozens die in night club fire The fire at the Santika Club in Soi Ekamai occurred shortly after the joyous midnight countdown, according to Pol Lt Gen Viboon Bangthamai, deputy metropolitan police commander. Thong Lo district police commander Pol Col Suphin Sapphuang said 61 people had been confirmed dead - 53 at the scene and …

On the aviation thread, the view was put forward that aviation is one of the three most significant inventions of the 20th century. For what it's worth, I think a poll might be interesting to find posters' views on the single greatest 'event' of the century - i.e. the event which affected the lives of most people on the planet. There are of course zillions to choose from - - the first satellite, the first man to circle the earth, the moon landing, the Space Shuttle - man's inhumanity to man and its whole ghastly panoply of wars from World Wars 1 and 2, the rise of Hitler, the Holocaust, Korea and Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Somalia - the dropping of the first atomi…

Helen Suzman, the internationally known anti-apartheid campaigner who befriended the imprisoned Nelson Mandela and offered an often lonely voice for change among South Africa’s white minority, has died, South Africa’s SAPA news agency reported Thursday. She was 91. Her daughter, Frances Jowell, said she died peacefully in her Johannesburg home, SAPA reported. The date and cause of her death were not immediately known. Mrs. Suzman was for many years among the most venerated of white campaigners urging an end to the injustices of racial rule. But, while she challenged apartheid at a time of violent protests among the black majority, she advocated peaceful change and d…

Any of you hear about Shifting Gears? It's a new Johnny Hazzard film with a seriously hot all gay male cast, but the guys also fuck a couple of girls. It's some weird way of trying to cross over gay porn stars to the straight market. The question of course, is how many guys want to watch Johnny Hazard enough to deal with seeing him with a girl as well as a guy. http://gay.fleshbot.com/5117422/we-watched...out-of-our-head

Reverend Rick Warren has been chosen to be the religious representative at the inauguration celebration in January. Representative Barney Frank, an openly gay congressman from Massachusetts, finds it insulting to him and the gay community because of Warren’s view on gays and gay marriage. I think Obama is trying to bring both the left and the right together. What do you think?

Just bought a player along with a new 50†HDTV. Decided that my first disc would be the complete Planet Earth series. What a fantastic visual experience. Can’t recommend it enough. Is Blu-ray porn next? Or maybe it’s already available??

I am sure almost all of us are aware when we get email requests allegedly from banks etc. to provide account details. These are phishing scams and should be immediately trashed. A new one - in my experience - surfaced the other day. Someone working in an office in Bangkok received a request for his email information to be updated - email box, his name, city where he lived. Basically innocuous, but he fell for it and returned the completed form. Now everyone on his list has received mails, allegedly from him, saying he is in Kuala Lumpur where he has been attending an AIDS Conference, had his wallet stolen and desperately needs US$3,500 to pay his hotel bills and…

I was really surprised to see Barack Obama choose Rick Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration. A lot of gay men and women, this one excluded, fought long and hard to help President Elect Obama win this election. I find Warren's words in a recent CNN interview to be pretty frightening: "But the issue to me is, I’m not opposed to that as much as I’m opposed to the redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister be together and call that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage." I applaud Ob…

...and if you share any of my museum rat inclinations, there are two great shows at the Met. One is wildly eclectic and covers a small fraction of acquisitions during Philippe de Montebello's tenure. The second is Art and Love in Renaissance Italy, which combines serious with definitely frivolous. The Dickhead Dish is fun. One fact I'll retain always is that among dildo fans of the time, glass ones from Murano were much in demand by those who could afford them. Who knew? Then at the Palitz Gallery on East 61st, there's a small and quirky show of Michelangelo-related items, all of them brought in from Florence. It may not be to everybody's taste, but I liked it. Wh…

Me thinks the Pope needs to get laid more.......... B) Lesbian and gay Christians have denounced Pope Benedict's claim that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour is as important as saving the rainforest from destruction. Gay Christians slam Pope's comments The Pontiff said humanity needed to listen to the "language of creation" to understand the intended roles of man and woman and that behaviour beyond traditional heterosexual relations was a "destruction of God's work". He called on the Church to protect man from the "destruction of himself" saying that tropical rainforests deserved protection but man as a creature "does not d…

I noticed that 2 sites men4rent and rentmen have this thing where if your ad expires then it still list it on the website, but it doesnt publish your number. However, people can still send emails to you, except you cant read them and rather the site sends you an email saying that you have 'client responses'. Well for about a week I didnt want to renew my subscription and was getting all these emails about how I had messages waiting, but couldnt check them. So once I signed back up, I could see who had messaged me and contacted them back. I think its good that we're able to have messages on hold, but without our number showing (of course) and not being able to read those…

Many come to Thailand for sex, many come to Thailand for the beautiful temples and ancient history, but this couple seemed to combine the two. AYAUTTAYA: -- -Two German tourists were caught in the act and fined Bt500 each for having sex inside an ancient temple in this central province Monday. The couple were found by an official of National Historical Park of Ayutthaya having sex on a wall of the Srisanphet Temple at 12:30pm. They stopped when the park official, Phaithoon Puengthong, blew his whistle while running toward them. The couple were handed over to police and were fined Bt500 each before released. -- The Nation 2008-12-08
