Food/Hotels/Taxis are all on the equivilent with NYC/MIA/SF prices! In Rio this past week, I got back around 11:00 pm from the sauna with a guy and he said, can we "go get something to eat?" I say sure where do u want to go and he says "let's just go to MacDonalds down the block". 2 cheeseburgers and 2 fries and 2 cokes were $48R or $23. U.S. An example how things have changed, the guy that comes to see me every afternoon in the hotel, I met 6 years ago when he was 19, He is coming with his girlfriend and 2 yr old to Cancun, Havana and NYC on a two week vacation the end of December! The other 21 yr old I see in Rio is coming to NYC for vacation in Jan. Up until a year or so ago, they would never have been able to get approved for a U.S. Visa much less afford a international vacation. What is unique I think in the world is that Brazilian saunas are the only place in the world outside of Thailand where you can see in person 30/40/50 or more rentboys at one time! I find this much more preferable then searching ads on websites. The cost of the guys is the one thing that hasn't really changed and now with the Brazilian Reias at $2.28 to the dollar, a programma with them is under $50. Also the atmosphere of the sauna with the bar and lounge areas fosters much more interaction and socialization. BarMixx is one of the last hustler bars left anywhere! I loved Stella's in NYC and Numbers in L.A., it like the hunt and seek adventure of a hustler bar. I find that if you start the conversation with the taxi driver or the waiter or the store clerk with "desculpa,falo pouco português " = "Sorry I speak little Portuguese" always gets you a big smile and alot of help! My Portuguese is good enough to get me by but the other big help is the translator app for iphones. It is in heavy use at the sauna at night the boys always want to ask all kinds of questions and it's surprising how many Brazilians have Iphones considering they are around $800. U.S. here TomCal, I have been enjoying your "read" -- and while I read I thought about the US visas for Brasilians, esp. for guys who work the saunas, etc. Those with whom I've spoken to both in Brasil and Argentina had stated that it was difficult; apparently things have changed. You might want to broach the topic with some of the guys to see what they have to say if you feel comfortable in doing this [2013]. I've been away from this forum as long as you have been, you are the one who inspired me to return, the level of the interations certainly goes through the roof. Your Porto Alegre chronicles have been breathtaking! You are topping yourself !The photo of the third guy is certainly the best you ever took. You are certainly an accomplished photographer, I don't know anything about photography technique, but I do know that having an eye to sense the moment that reveals an inner self is part of it. You don't have to tell us that the guy is one of the greatest things you (or anyone) ever had. Is all there, the expression, the body language, yes is possible to sense a body language in a still (masterful shot) picture. In porto alegre i always stay in the moinjos de vento area either the sheraton the mercure hotels or this trip the Cosmopolitan Master Grand Hotel. Best area to stay in P.A.! I'm now a big fan of duolingo! It is great and I think I'm hooked, thanks for the tip. I used to be an online subscriber to Rosetta Stone and Duolingo seems quite similar with the exception of it being free! That is what I call value for money! So, I'm now on an intensive two weeks to brush up before my trip. I've also downloaded iSpeak Portuguese which seems like it will come in useful to negotiate fun in the sauna as I suspect Duolingo may not cover such conversations in detail! I can not speak to the exact amount that Tomcal spends, but having spent time with him in Rio, I can say that he does not over-pay and in fact probably pays less than many tourists do. Trzinko, that is exactly where the apartment I always stay at is. Great location! Maybe by the time you get there the General Osario Metro(subway) station will be back open, makes it very easy to get to Club 117 and Meo Mundo.
