In Contrast, Bogotá, Medellín, Salvador, Mexico DF, Rio, where I have never suffered from any crime, have all been visits no longer than 2 weeks.

Obviously works for some. I was in Rio for just two days and was mugged in the middle of day. It was a Sunday with few people around!

On my sole visit to Mexico City, I got totally lost one Sunday afternoon while looking for a popular gay destination.  Ended up walking along deserted streets for 45 minutes until I located a Metro station. Figured if I survived that I could relax a bit. That was in 2004. Since then most of of my travels have been limited to SE Asian. There's no pace I feel safer than the streets--while sidewalks--of Bangkok.

Just an update.... was out walking along Ipanema beach tonight, didn't get mugged/robbed. Was 11pm, but I have my Gremlins midnight rule, was back in my room with my future ex-bf by that time.

I wouldn't dare to do this alone.  My life is more precious than this.  But sounds like you were not walking alone.

I agree.  I am into muscle men which  usually cost much more in Thailand than in Brazil.

Stick to your guns $40usd- 200 reis is the going outcall rate too, don't go throwing money, they'll do more usually just for the asking. Filming the way you want, they may ask for more...but don't go falling in love, because tomorrow is another day, lol

I think it’s somewhat telling that in Brazil the guys will refer to you as their client or customer but in Thailand they are quick to call you their “boyfriend “

They can call me whatever they want.  I call them "prostitutes", in Brazil or Thailand. You do realize they are prostitutes and you are a customer, don't you?

TotallyOz, I m really curious:

How can one feel safe after being robbed at gun point 3 times?

I mean, at the very least u must feel that it can happen again. That's the definition of NOT feeling safe; isnt it?

Furthermore, who's to say that on the 4th time the gun won't go on?

I've been to brazil 3 times and to clmbia - 4. I like them, not only for the sex.

M quite sure that if I was gun robbed once - I wldnt return )-:

Can't answer your question other than I think the economy was really bad and two of the robberies happened near ATMs and I had been warned to be careful.

The only time I ever felt unsafe was with @floridarob when he had me walking the streets late one night and I thought "Oz, you are insane."  Rob speaks their language and can easily communicate and blends in well. But, I stand out like a sore thumb. Last time I ever did that. I am more of a taxi guy when I am there. I do feel safe walking down Avenue Paulista and shopping or around my hotels. But, late at night, no.

Of course but I find that in Thailand they try to move the needle toward boyfriend sooner to see if you bite when the buffalo dies or someone is in the hospital or...

I just saw a news article today on the violence and crime plaguing Rio de Janeiro. They make it sound like things are starting to boil over out there. And with my friends messaging me complaining about all the crime telling me that it's different now than before. Makes me think maybe it is getting worse.

And then there are those who will say, "Oh, I've never experienced any crime there. I know the city and its culture too well." 🙄

Plus ça change…

I remember, as a kid, reading about armed gangs, robbing entire apartment buildings in Rio . This was in the pre-cell phone times. They would cut the power and the telephone communications to the building. They would have armed people on the first floor /garage level. Then they would go through the building door-to-door robbing everybody.

it was far away the most outrageous thing I ever remember hearing. And I grew up in a violent neighborhood in the United States.

Anyway, Rio has been extremely dangerous for my entire lifetime.  I’m guessing this waxes and wanes somewhat.  But with extremely high levels of insecurity, it is easier to understand why people would support fascist politicians with easy answers.

Thanks for sharing this AFP wire story. It makes quite a few references to increased police patrols in the Copacabana area. And I can vouch for that.

This Saturday afternoon I took a long walk along Avenida Atlântica on the hotel side and on the beach side. Police were at nearly every intersection, in the middle of long blocks, and parked on the esplanade. I'm used to seeing police here, but this was an all-time record. They were patrolling up and down the parallel avenues too.

For the record, most wore tight brown uniforms. You might not have picked all of them at 117,  but generally not too bad. Many of the muscular military policemen wore tight white t-shirts stating Policia Militar along with shorts seriously stretched by their quads.

Sorry. I got distracted from the serious subject of police deterring crime in Copacabana. To recap: Yes, many are indeed here.

The linked article doesn't provide many facts to back up the safety risk assertions.  Local residents typically know where the safe / unsafe areas are, though.  Not always, but usually.  I was in Rio, maybe 15 years ago, when tourists waiting for a 'Bondinho de Santa Teresa' were at times, being beaten-up/robbed.  I was sitting in the sand under an umbrella at Praia Ipanema not long after or maybe it was before the 'Bondinho' muggings period when a gang of young people from one of the favelas arrived and started hitting many people with clubs/bats, stealing personal belongings before running-off.  And for decades, I'm recalling, hotel staff's in Cop.a have been warning guests leaving to visit parts of the city to leave valuables, cameras, bags, etc., behind because they thought there were dangers.  Is the situation worse today than in years past, is this just another cycle of criminal activity that comes and goes?  None of us is going to know that.

I'm glad I didn't read these posts before my first trip to RIO because i probavoy wouldnt have gone after reading.

@Xclay, like you when we were there last year and previous years for new years eve and carnaval there were police on every corner. They had patrol cars in medians with lights on and it was very peaceful.

The cops are definitely buffed and their uniforms fit like a glove. I'm following one on social media now. This guy was a ball of blubber in July, now he's all lean, muscular, ripped and posts pics daily to his social media account.

If anyone is there, speak to the cops. Some of them do play for money.  The one I'm talking to now has agreed to come to the apartment in a few weeks make love to my hole and choke me while we're in the missionary position.

He posts pics daily and when i told him I would be traveling with friends and asked did be have a few police officer friends he could bring with him, his response was, "YES!"

When you're there, dress and look like a poor man, but fuk like a porn star.

Look at those arms. Wouldn't you want to be chocked by this sexy MF
