I’m curious about what Brazil was like before I started traveling there in 2021.  If you don’t mind sharing, what part of the country did you visit?

I was there, on business,  in the 80s. Not so much time to look around, but plenty of boys, in bars, and saunas. Pre internet, so you had to look. Sauna  Leblon,  pre Aids, was great. I vacationed in the tourist trap of Rio,  where I didnt experience any crime around the playa area,   although we were cautious about leaving valuable "unattended on the beach,  but was told to be careful if we ventured into the "poor" more remote areas out of town.....

Over the years since, the warning about crime in the inner sections has become louder, as the country became poorer...

Its a long time ago! Round the back of Copacabana  hote, were gay go go bars. You could pick up sexy guys for rent,  and go to Leblon, or the hotel. I would do some research in the forum or on youtube about the places you want to visit. People have this idea that places like DR, Brazil, Egypt are dangerous. Because of an event that happened. I have two friends who went to Brazil before I did. Both got robbed. However they were also in parts of the city most tourist don't go and times of night. Its all about common sense and knowing your surroundings. I for one have been to brazil I have gone 4 times and come back home safe sound and well drained. If I believed what people told me. I would have never gone.

The reason why I have not traveled to Brazil to sample all the delicious men and their BIG endowments, is because of the distance. From San Francisco, it would be two long haul flights to Rio. I'm in my late Sixties and just don't recover quickly and fully from jetlag.

It's not that big a time zone change. Only 5 hours' difference in the northern winter and 4 hours' difference in the northern summer. Try flying from Sydney to anywhere interesting!

In any case, one thing about being senior and retired (presumably you are) is that we have all the time on the world. My usual solution when I fly anywhere with more than 6 hours' time zone change is to plan to stay an extra day after arriving in the foreign country; no pressure to do anything other than settle in, walk the neighbourhood and familiarise myself with useful things like where's the nearest convenience store, the nearest ATM, the nearest laundry shop, etc. And sleep as much as I need.

If you're slow to adjust, then stay 2 extra days at the start of the holiday. Only costs a bit more compared to flights costs. Cheaper than those who absolutely must fly business class for its flat bed (if any) - and still suffer from jet lag.

I was friendly with the hotel clerk and speak Spanish helped. Met a few guys from skokka site and two via the clerk. Like any big cities in south america, Guayaquil during the day seems to be safe. At night with a lot less people, it looks and feels unsafe.
