The legislative overhaul will also ban insulting the president or state institutions and expressing any views counter to Indonesia's state ideology. Cohabitation before marriage is also banned. Decades in the making, the new criminal code is expected to be passed on Dec 15, Indonesia's deputy justice minister, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, told Reuters. "We're proud to have a criminal code that's in line with Indonesian values," he told Reut…

From Pattaya Mail By Barry Kenyon The opening of the China – Laos bullet train in December 2021 has transformed the future of regional vacations according to travel specialists. The train runs several times daily from the Chinese border to Vientiane, capital of Laos, which in turn is close to the Thailand with plentiful rail and road connections. The top rail speed is 160 km an hour with a distance of 422 km. The Association of Thai Travel agents points out that the Chinese government still bans group tours abroad, but that the rules are already being slackened. For example, compulsory quarantine on return to China is being replaced by home isolat…

From the Thaiger Popular booking website Agoda says Thailand is one of the first Asian countries to see tourism rebound after the Covid-19 pandemic. Omri Morgenshtern, Agoda’s chief executive says even though the inbound search rate for Thailand on the website was 39% lower than in the same period in 2019, it has begun to rise since the beginning of 2022. “Thailand is leading Asia in terms of inbound tourists, but it has not yet reached 2019 levels.” Moregenshtern says it will take about three to six months for such search rates to return to pre-pandemic levels. But, he says it is contingent upon major inbound markets like mainland China, Hong Kong, and Jap…

From The Diplomat In June, Thailand welcomed its first Pride Parade in almost 16 years. The celebratory event in the capital Bangkok not only brought together thousands of members from the country’s highly visible LGBTQ community but also underscored a host of issues: from the rights of sex workers to legal gender recognition to marriage equality. As one of only nine Asian signatories to a 2011 declaration of LGBTQ rights at the United Nations Human Rights Council, Thailand has often been hailed as a haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning individuals. Yet, the country still lacks mechanisms for safeguarding LGBTQ rights. For too long, hum…

NOTE -- All the more reason to plan a side trip to our other favorite destinations! From CNN Nam khao, Laos: This dish features crispy, deep-fried rice balls made with a base of red curry paste, coconut flakes and egg. The fried rice is then crumbled up and mixed with sausage, tempura, peanuts, onion, chili and more, and served with fresh lettuce leaves. (CNN) — Bubbling cauldrons of noodle soup, flaky flatbreads, kaleidoscopic desserts -- when it comes to street food, Asia delivers big on variety and flavor. This vast region sprawls across equatorial tropics and mountain ranges, volcanic islands and frenetic megacities, so it's no surprise that …

From The Thaiger Retiring in Asia is a dream for many, with fond memories of short or longer travel to some of the humid and exotic countries in the region. All that exquisite cuisine, diverse sceneries, fascinating histories, intriguing temples, tropical adventures, colourful nightlife, and markets and malls for shopping. Lots of shopping. So it’s easy to become enamoured with all things “Asia.” But living for a longer time, or retiring, is an entirely different proposition. Whilst we can recommend some good and bad points about some of your Asian retirement candidates, some things you simply won’t know until you give your prospective retirement choice a proper…

From Channel News Asia BANGKOK: Thailand expects the first leg of an 873 km high-speed railway connecting it to China to begin operations in 2026, a senior official said on Tuesday (Jan 18), three years later than planned, Phase one links the capital Bangkok to the city of Nakhon Ratchasima, about 200 km away. Phase two connects Nakhon Ratchasima with Nong Khai, bordering Laos, about 330 km further north. The second phase is currently under environmental assessment and is expected to begin service in 2028, said government deputy spokeswoman Traisulee Traisaranakul. The project comes under China's ambitious Belt and Road initiative, which aims to link …

This is not altogether a unique theme. The powers that be in Thailand made their case for attracting exclusively high-spending foreigners right up until the moment they realized that they weren't showing up in numbers sufficient to revive the economy. Now Indonesia believes it can get by with a fraction of the 17 million who arrived annually before the pandemic. Only time will tell. From Channel News Asia SINGAPORE: Indonesia is aiming for quality over quantity of tourists as it opens up after 18 tough months of closed borders and bumpy transitions into post-pandemic life, said Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno. Southeast Asia’s biggest ec…

From Channel News Asia JAKARTA: Indonesia has approved a COVID-19 vaccine produced by a unit of China's Chongqing Zhifei Biological Products for emergency use, its food and drug agency (BPOM) said on Thursday (Oct 7), the fourth Chinese vaccine cleared for use in the country. BPOM chief Penny Lukito said the protein-recombinant vaccine, given three times in a three-month span, has an efficacy rate of about 81 per cent, with 77.47 per cent efficacy against the Delta variant, lower than other variants, she said. Trials of the vaccine, Zifivax, were conducted in China, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Ecuador and Indonesia, involving 28,000 people, with the efficacy base…

From Thai Enquirer This article was originally published on The Third Pole. (Original story can be found here) About a year ago, the Boon Rueang Wetland Forest Conservation Group began a survey of wildlife in the 483-hectare community forest in northern Thailand. “We have recorded some leopards, otters and other animals,” says Songpol Chanruang, chair of the group. Though only around 130 kilometres long, the Ing River that feeds the Boon Rueang wetlands is the second most important habitat for the Eurasian otter in Thailand, according to the Living River Association, an NGO that promotes community-based conservation in the Mekong basin. The Eurasian otter –…

From CNBC Climate change will bring flooding to the world’s coasts, and it’s becoming clearer which cities are most threatened. Cities with the worst exposure to coastal flooding in the coming decades are overwhelmingly located in Asia, according to a comprehensive analysis by leading climate scientists, with port cities in India and China particularly vulnerable. Researchers at the OECD, climate risk modeling firm RMS and Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, among others, cited four major factors creating the threat: the deepening climate emergency, the gradual cave-ins of land, rising populations, and the migration of people from the countryside to…

From Washington Diplomat The US-ASEAN Business Council, a powerful Washington-based corporate association active in 10 Southeast Asian countries, has named Ted Osius as its new president and CEO. Osius, a former US ambassador to Vietnam, assumed his new job Aug. 23, replacing Alexander Feldman, who led the council for 12 years. Feldman has since relocated to Singapore as president of Boeing Southeast Asia. In a Sept. 8 interview, Osius told The Washington Diplomat that COVID-19 recovery efforts top the agenda of his organization, whose main mission is to promote US trade and investment in the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN):…

PART ONE: My work had taken me to Manila for a four week stay last January and again this past December. This is a compilation report of my own personal experiences. HOTEL: Makati was certainly the place of choice for straight titty bars and female prostitutes, but it seemed from the gay guides that Malate was the place of choice for gays. After checking out the various web site gay guides, I decided to stay in a cheap business hotel across from Robinson’s Mall. My gay work colleague decided to stay in an Airbnb but quickly moved out because the place had security guards either registering your guests or not allowing you to have guests unless you provided the guest…

With new threads about boys and sex a bit thin on the ground, perhaps one focusing on at least one of these topics might be of interest. Less about sex, though. From the time I was at school, I have been sort of obsessed with the male body. At first it was faces and I had my first 'crush' at the age of 12. Naturally nothing came of it as I was too backward in coming forward and the object of my desire seemed to have no interest. I was even seated next to him at the end of term Prize-giving. Oh, what might have been! It was not long before my eyes were gazing downwards, particularly on the sports fields - well, in the changing rooms - and at the school's pool. The le…

Pre-pandemic, I never hesitated to lock in an airfare well in advance, usually just after returning from my previous trip. That was then, this is now. Four unknowns make booking way out hazardous for four reasons: First, you aren’t assured that the carrier you book will actually fly on your chosen days. Second, you don’t know if your destination will be open to you. Third, you don’t know what local restrictions may be in place on your departure date. Fourth, change fee ambiguities. Some fare have no change fees but you do have to pay any fare differences. Unless you’re prepared to book fully refundable fares, no carrier is offering refunds. I’ve n…

It's clear we all have stories to tell about our times in Asia. Not necessarily with the boys of our dreams or the times of our lives. Often just general observations that strike us for one reason or another. Since few of us can travel and our time at home has not only already extended for the better part of 15 months but there is no end in sight, this little series (hopefully more will contribute) may help to while away the time - as well as raise a smile or two. As mentioned in another thread about Gay Icons, about 5 years ago I used to write for a blog run by an Ozzie guy. I kept much of the material and it's easy to bring it more up to date. So I'll start the ball rol…

Just a bit of fun! I saw a programme on TV the other evening titled No Sleep No Fomo. (I still do not know what Fomo stands for!) Each episode is a rather crazy 60 hour romp with a host from Singapore and an Asian pop star who do a series of odd challenges in various parts of Asia. I felt I had seen enough pop stars I'd like to spend time (i.e. a night) with - even if they are not gay and not single - that I could not be bothered with any more. Then of course, someone in a K Pop group or an actor in a movie gets the urges going again. In this episode I saw my latest. Eric Nam is a Korean of American descent. Born in Atlanta, when he was 23 he spent a year stud…

From Bangkok Post SINGAPORE: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the European Union have concluded the world’s first bloc-to-bloc air transport agreement, Asean said, to allow their airlines to easier expand services to and within the respective regions. The agreement, once formalised, will mean that airlines of the combined 37 member states can fly any number of non-stop flights between countries in both regions, Asean said on Friday. Additionally, airlines will be permitted to fly up to 14 weekly passenger services with one stop within the other region to pick up passengers on the return leg. There will no limits on flights with one sto…

I have not read any reference to this article in other news sources. Hope it to bears fruit. ============================================ From the Phnom Penh Post Five of the six Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries – Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam – are willing to welcome tourists fully-vaccinated against Covid-19 to their shores amid the pandemic, in an effort to kick-start a recovery in the tourism market dampened by Covid-19. The commitment was conveyed on May 27 during the 47th meeting of the tourism working group, comprised of representatives of GMS countries and Metro Manila-based Asian Development Bank. Myanmar seemingly took n…
