Excerpted from Bloomberg Financial Asia’s 20 Richest Families Control $450 Billion The region’s 20 wealthiest clans are now worth more than $450 billion combined, underscoring how the world’s economic growth engine is minting fortunes on an unprecedented scale. Not surprisingly, some of the places spawning these riches are facing widening inequality. Hong Kong, which gave rise to six of the biggest family fortunes, has one of the widest wealth gaps. The street protests that have engulfed the city for months were sparked by fears of eroding freedoms under China but fueled by the divide between the rich and those who struggle to afford housing. Bloomberg’s cat…

From Channel News Asia ...from Elvin Ng, Romeo Tan, Desmond Tan and Zoe Tay Elvin Ng and Romeo Tan each spent about four months filming in Taiwan for the drama All Is Well. (Photo: Instagram/Romeotan) What do you do when you’re stationed in Taipei for a couple of months? You eat your way through it, of course. That’s exactly what Singapore actors including Desmond Tan, Romeo Tan and Elvin Ng did when they were filming for the Taiwan-Singapore co-production All Is Well, a new Mandarin drama premiering on Monday (Aug 26). They were there for up to four months at a time, working and, of course, working out their appetites. “I can give you all…

From MSN A few months ago, Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL) received tentative approval to dramatically expand its flight schedule at Tokyo's Haneda International Airport next year. As expected, the airline is taking this opportunity to consolidate all of its Tokyo flights at Haneda, the airport closest to the city center. Last week, Delta confirmed that it plans to shut down its hub at Narita International Airport after more than four decades of service. As part of this restructuring, Delta will stop flying to Singapore as of Sept. 22. From then on, it will rely on joint venture partner Korean Air for getting customers to Singapore. These moves should drive strong u…

They may not represent the reason why most members travel to Bangkok but they're an intricate part of the local gay scene. They delight the largely Asian audiences from every show bar from Soi 4 to Patpong and even in Moonlight. This article explores their achievements in finding their place in LGBT communities and the discrimination that complicates their lives. From the Bangkok Post What is it like to be a transgender person in Thailand, a nation that seems to be friendly to the LGBTI population? Each person would probably reply differently depending on personal experiences they've had navigating their daily lives. But there remains a common theme of discrimin…

I recently posted an article about the declining birth rate in Thailand and some other Asian countries. In Japan, however, there's a movement afoot that goes a step beyond, leaving me wondering where the next generation of Japanese young men are going to come from. From the NY Times TOKYO — The bride wore a birthday cake of a dress, with a scalloped-edge bodice and a large hoop skirt. A veil sprouted from her black bob. Moments before the wedding began, she stood quietly on a staircase, waiting to descend to the ceremony. “Wow,” she thought. “I’m really doing this.” This was no conventional wedding to join two people in matrimony. Instead, a …

I checked from LAX and SFO and found airfares to Bangkok of $520 per person. This is not a basic fare, but a regular fare. The husband and I booked for December and paid $1038 total for both. United will give us a measly 2000 frequent flyer miles each for the travel. Our flights are on ANA, which I think is pretty good. We'll find out! This is roughly a half-price fare.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opinion/1671140/time-to-set-the-press-free The sad state of affairs in Thailand is detailed as press freedom has been curbed, much like in China. Thailand has historically had a vibrant free press, so it's sad news. But they do have a new Queen!

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn has married his deputy head of security in a surprise ceremony broadcast on all Thai TV channels, days before the king's official coronation. Busy, bustling, expensive, crowded, sexless. That’s Hong Kong, or at least it is after a week in Bangkok. I know there are massage parlors where you can get a hand job, but last time I did this, two years ago, I traveled out to Causeway Bay to a creepy apartment for a massage that even my mother wouldn’t have liked So, can anyone enlighten me? I am not looking for an orgy of cute Hong Kong movie stars. Well, I wouldn’ t turn it down. But some basic guy on guy fun has to exist. Straights find it here all of the time. Look at the population! Thanks! I know that I will soon be deluged with facts!

From CNN (31 Mar.) A law goes into effect Wednesday in Brunei that will punish adultery and homosexual sex with death. Anyone found guilty of the offenses will be stoned to death, according to a new penal code based on Sharia law, an Islamic legal system that outlines strict corporal punishments. The strict new laws were announced by the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, in 2014 and have been rolled out gradually in the small nation on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. The latest phase of implementation, including the brutal new provisions, was quietly announced on the Brunei attorney general's website in December. The Sultan "does not…

A Singaporean doctor used his own blood to make sure that his American lover would pass an HIV test, allowing him to work in Singapore and live with the doctor. At some point in their relationship, the American got the names of some 14,000 Singaporeans with HIV and released them on the internet. Who knows why? Now the couple is in big trouble as indiscretions apparently led the government to discover the fraudulent tests. 8800 of those on the HIV list are foreigners, making one wonder why Singapore made such a big deal out of keeping out people with HIV. The list members now live in fear of their information going public. The story starts in 2008, and is hard to quickly …

In the past, I enjoyed the forums at the website gaythailand.com. Once I felt I had learned what it had to offer, I deleted my screen name but kept reading the forums. You can’t do that anymore. I couldn’t. The owner of the site wanted to move on, so the name was sold, but what to do with years of content? Well, some fellow that probably has never run a forum took it over and combined it into gayguides.com. That was great that this kind fellow preserved the content and allowed it to stay alive. His name is Michael and I wish him all the best with the site. But, he totallly doesn’t know that I can’t read the content! When I tried to resurrect my old name I was de…

In Hong Kong, various touts appproach people, often aggressively, to hand out cards for tailors. I always hate to sayno, but now I have a new dilemma. What do I do with the 416 new suits, along with the shirt upgrades and the ties? I don’t wear these things anymore. Maybe I could start a Go Fund Me page so I can pay for them. Anybody out there my size?

Caeron's experience makes me wonder if Bangkok is much fun anymore. A post on gaythailand by Michael was also not encouraging. I have been there 15 times over the years, and certainly in the beginning (1987) it was a blast. Now it seems all money-oriented, giving as little as possible for the highest rate. Boys lazy in bed, such as the Tawan guy. The innocence seems gone for good, and that was part of the attraction. I used to think the guys were glad to be chosen and eager to please. There was no race to the door when finished either. Am I wrong?

Posted Today, 01:47 AM I have had a very short visit to Bangkok after deciding that I wanted to visit Myanmar, having never been (that cut my time in Bangkok). I did my best to make full use of my time. Thought I'd share my experience to thank other posters here for their advice on my other visits scheduled for this trip. arena massage - older mostly muscled guys. Probably unfair, but felt to me like these guys were truckers or construction workers. If you like them a bit rough, this would work for you. I'm more of a face guy myself so didn't find much that suited me. One younger less muscled guy had, however, a megawatt smile. …
