Today on a Thai station they showed an old style Muay Thai fighting contest which was being held in Chiang Mai with several countries bordering competing. This is a brutal sport. No boxing gloves are used. There are strings or just tape covering the hands. So there was a lot of bloody faces. There are no judges. If both are standing at the end of the fight there is no winner. My friend told me that this is true Muay Thai.

I walked around the Sunee area this afternoon and noticed that the soi that in perpendicular to White Knight restaurant where Club 69 used to be loacted is closed for a street party. They have both ends of the soi blocked. I counted 28 round tables set up in the street with a couple of pigs skewered and ready for roasting. I imagine it is a private party but guys who usually use this soi to get to Sunee may have to find an alternative route. When I walked through they were also erecting a performance stage and an audio system.

A friend, my bf and I tried a restaurant tonight that was suggested to me. It is the only restaurant in Pattaya that serves Indonesian food that I know of. It is a nicely, simply decorated place that looks like it was a private home at one time. The service was relaxed professional and the food was very tasty. We ordered the Rice Table which was supposed to be for two, but it was more than enough for the three of us. Their Rice Table consists of rice and 14 small dishes. We all had water to drink and we had 2 coffees and 2 desserts. The total bill was 1460 baht. It is worth a visit. I forgot to mention that the chef (cute Indonesian guy) came to our table …

In reading the Bangkok Post today I came across an article that said that construction may drop drastically. He said design companies had also experienced a drop of about 70% in the value of their business due to the development of projects being delayed until the middle of next year. The association anticipates that 1.6 million construction workers may lose their jobs.......but no problem, the article said, they can go back to agriculture??????? I think this is a mind set that needs to change for Thailand to really move forward. Labor is not really valued. It is a very cheap and under appreciated.

The Thai economy is expected to fall as much as -2.4% this year, after fourthquarter 2008 figures pointed to a severe downturn in growth, according to Moody’s Economy.com. ‘‘Fourth-quarter GDP numbers suggest the country is in the running for the label, ‘worst hit in Asia’,’’ said Alaistair Chan, an associate economist in the Sydney office of Moody’s Economy.com. He said that Thai gross domestic product, down 4.3% in the fourth quarter from the same period in 2007, represented a decline in output by an ‘‘incredible’’ 22.3% on an annualised basis, and that government statements that the economy would post slight growth for 2009 appeared ‘‘overly optimistic’’. …

Aljazeera TV did a report on Thailand's economy today. It reported that the economy contracted 6.1%, GM is laying off 25% of its Thai work force, exports are down 26%, tourism arrival down 20%, and the Thai Board of Trade feels the worse is still to come. On a positive note, the banking system is strong. It has great equity. Its interest rate will be cut again. I was talking to a group of USA friends at Oud's bar and even though there was great discussion about the economy in US and in Thailand, we all agreed that none of us were suffering.

But a friend had 2 young (33 year old) guys visit from the US and they wanted to see a disco. I tried to get my Thai friend to take them since they are about the same age, but he insisted that I go too. Can any of you gentlemen recommend a good website or travel agency for getting a decent price on a business class flight from London or Amsterdam to Bangkok? Economy prices seem to be falling, but I haven't seen much evidence of the same happening to business class prices. Thanks.

Does any one know why the 2 main gay hotels in pattaya do not lower their rates in the low season. If you look at the Phuket hotels , they tend to raise and lower theirs ,depending on the time of year .I expect this is because the pattaya hotels think that they have a captive market regardless of what is going on in the rest of the western world regarding the cashflow suition Also althought , i am not at present in pattaya, I have heard on the grape vine that both hotels have again increased their drink prices.
