Alternative countries to Thailand for retirement?

I have lived in Thailand a long time, no need to work and still enjoy a good gay life. However what with the recent bridge club fiasco and other issues I am considering whether there are other countries that may be able to offer an alternative place to live....

 

Any suggestions and why?

 

What about the Philippines or Malaysia?

Malaysia - Islamic

Philippines - too high criminality (in comp. with Thailand)  

Vietnam - under commy while never homosexuality has been in criminal code

Laos - great, but undeveloped too much + has no beaches and sea

Cambodia is next in my list for retiring after TH

Some promises gives Burma (Myanmar), while has unrest on north and is still too much undeveloped.

You would first have to consider which kind of visa that allows to retire is available for which country.

I had 6 happy years working in Mexico during the early nineties and always thought I would retire there. My co worker, who decided to stay and retire there lived to the ripe old of age of 92 and he was still "at it" at least until his heart suddenly stopped working. He was quite a few years older than me I should point out.

 

As a foreign resident/worker you can get a 6 month stay and hopping to the border to renew, as you used to be able to do in Thailand, was no big deal. In fact they even allowed me to drive my car to the docks and drive around to the customs shed and export and import my car (I had a USA reg car) and yourself all at the same time. I can not confirm if this is still possible though.

 

There were boys a'plenty pretty well everywhere. 

 

I still prefer Thailand but that would be my second choice if things go from bad to worse by the time I get my free bus pass.

The police raid wouldn't even begin to change my views on where to retire.

 

In case of a modest but satisfactory pension:

 2 Cambodia

 3 Laos

 

Having said that, there are a few places I want to spend time in before ever having to make that kind of commitment.

The cost of living in Spain is very reasonable.  The infrastructure is fantastic.  The ease of going everywhere in the world is also easy.  And, lastly, the boys are some of the hottest and sexiest I have ever seen.

 

I think Firecat posted on here about his last Spain experience.  Do a search for that and look at the photos.

 

I have been there about 10 times and always wanted to stay longer than I booked.  I love the people, the food and the atmosphere.  Oh, and the boys are hot!

Certainly not as cheap as Thailand , Bali etc butI love Barcelona and some great  boys on the apps.Lots of smaller cities I have to visit sometime especially on the Coast.

Spain is a major gay vacation destination for Europeans. Not just the mainland but the Islands too. There are a lot of bargain properties available at the moment.

ES=Espana is of course daft easy IF you are EU- right of abode for unlimited time. SO: again; THINK before posting and state from where you are. Anyone knows that different rules apply to diffwerent countries.

BTW_ in those sauna's in Mad and Bcn with rent-on-the-spot there was not a single Spanish guy to be found. The one who claimed to be (from Andalucia) was of course Moroccon.

Based on my one visit to the Barcelona sauna, anyone used to smooth slim Asian guys is likely to be badly disappointed by the offer there.

Of course, whilst we are free to move within the EU to live in Spain, the Spanish money boys are free to go and ply their trade in London.  As you can see on Planet Romeo.   However, I'm not tempted by any of them either.

Please note that homosexuality is a crime in Malaysia and any Islamic countries.

It didn't seem to be a worry for the six guys that visited my room last week in KL. I would consider retiring in Malaysia, most sex is free or very inexpensive even compared with Thailand. There are other considerations besides sex, you need a place where you have friends with similar interests to hangout with and Thailand is a better option so far.

It's not lucky. It's hardly enforced in Malaysia, with the exception of that politically motivated case. I believe you yourself also know that. If it is so strict, why would they allow gay sauna in the 1st place. As long as it happens behind closed doors & privately, we can assume the authorities would not barge into your room just to catch you in the act.

Right, it's one of those laws they only enforce when they want to throw the book at someone. I've had great encounters in Malaysia and the guys I've met have been quite happy with their gay lives there. Not the best place to join a Gay Pride parade, granted, but hooking up and doing whatever you want to do in private isn't really a problem at all.

I would tolerate the Malaysian legal position on homosexuality for holidays, but would think much more carefully about that before considering living there.

Countries do not always evolve towards liberal tolerant behaviour.  Sometimes they move in the opposite direction, as we have seen in some other countries.   Iran for example.

 

Whilst western countries have been evolving towards more freedom, there are notable exceptions.    For example, Sweden & some other European countries have banned prostitution (or the purchasing side of the transaction).  

Now what business does the government have interfering in such decisions made by a pair of consenting adults ?

I would not retire to Sweden.   Too cold, expensive and intolerant.

I have been to Turkey 6 times.  Each time has been great and I love the country, the people and the guys. I have always had plenty of sex and no issue with meeting guys online.

 

As for Malaysia, the same is true. I have had great experiences there.

I just read a disturbing article about a crackdown on LGBT people in Indonesia.

Not good news.

The mayor of the Indonesian city of Tangerang has claimed milk formula and instant noodles can make babies gay.

Arief R Wismansyah made the comments at a city-run pregnancy seminar on Tuesday (24 February).

‘To create Indonesian children that are healthy smart and competitive, the most important thing is, from the beginning, to provide them adequate nutrition, especially breastfeeding,’ he was quoted as saying by Coconuts Jakarta.

Wismansyah said nowadays parents were so busy that they often only fed their children formula and instant foods, which could have a permanent negative effect on their child’s development.

‘So, it’s no wonder that recently there are more LGBT,’ he said.

Wismansyah’s claim is the most recent in a spate of anti-gay rhetoric in the Southeast Asian country.

Earlier this week, Indonesia’s defense minister said the LGBTI movement was more dangerous than nuclear warfare.

And in January, the minister of research, technology and higher education called for LGBTI students to be banned from universities.

Gay sex is not a crime in Indonesia, except in Sharia-ruled Aceh province, but remains taboo in many parts the Muslim-majority country.

OK, so they have a long history of tolerance, but this legislation shows their politicians are capable of interfering in matters that should be left to the individuals.
