Recommended Posts

As reported elsewhere in these forums, there recently have been demonstrations in Bangkok. On Thursday 15 the government instituted a "severe State of Emergency" in Bangkok for the next 30 days. Now there may be sanctions if these are discussed publicly and on social media. The Prime Minster stated  yesterday -

The new emergency situation prohibits social gatherings of more than 5 people, especially political, as well as the publication of media that could create a misunderstanding that will affect national security or peace and order ...

He also warned all social media users to be cautious when publishing or posting any false or misleading information on any social media platforms under the new severe emergency declaration.

Across the nation in fact. About time too. Thais deserve a democracy. And the fact that the demonstrators are  predominantly young and  middle-class with  middle class parents, the chances  are that the government won't dare to mow them down in the streets like they did the Red Shirts.

As one of the signs said at the Victory Monument, "Who killed the Redshirts?" A rhetorical question; everyone knows who did. And that's why my prayers are with the students.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has revoked his state of severe emergency declaration in Bangkok, and related orders, effective from noon on Thursday, saying the violence that prompted it is over.

The announcement was published in the Royal Gazette.

It said the state of emergency declarations were issued on Oct 15 and 16 to stop offences against the royal institution and unrest. The declarations had been set to be valid until Nov 13.

On Thursday Gen Prayut said that the violent situation had ended and government officials were able to enforce relevant laws to solve problems.

The lifting Declaration of a Serious Emergency Situation in Bangkok was effective at noon on Thursday according to the royal gazette.

However, the state of emergency, which limited the arrival of international tourists and introduced coronavirus restrictions, is still in effect until the end of October.

The decree that no more than 5 may assemble has been withdrawn.

Apparently it inflamed the situation and increased crowd size

Yes but that was the EMERGENCY decree for Bangkok.

Yesterday (Wednesday 27th of Oct.) the cabinet agreed to extend the general emergency decree till the end of November.
