Is Punta Cana a viable option?

Was there for a birthday party in December 2021 at an all-inclusive (which make up the bulk of hotel options in PC). I regularly hear stories about hookups with hotel staff being easy in the large hotels, but that is risky for obvious reasons.

There are few options for hiring male escorts once you have arrived. The Apps are mostly horny foreigners and there is no real club scene to explore.

Ezequiel is a great resource, but his (growing) business is really boat rentals and organizing private events -- he is happy to help out, but as noted, is not easy to contact.  Ezequiel actually referred me to another Toronto contact (we had met previously) who organized the "present" for the birthday boy.  As is often the case, language is a major barrier -- I don't think it would have been possible to organize timing/arrivals/transportation with just English. But I could be completely wrong about that -- just my experience (it took many WhatsApp calls to get our boy onsite). As for security, as many resorts in PC are VERY large, it is easy to sneak in a guest, but there are serious penalties if discovered. It is trespassing and they take it seriously. FWIW there were women openly soliciting in the lobby bar every evening I was there.

For a full-on manwhore experience there is way more action to be found in the capital. Punta Cana is better to get in some beach time (and maybe bring a favourite boy).

there is an app MotelNow (or on the web https://www.motelnow.com.co/). The prices for 3-4 hours are peanuts, the comfort level might be better than even upscale hotel, and the peace of mind is priceless. Fercho Massages and "MASAJES G.A.Y MEDELLIN" use some of these sex motels, I think it can be a good practice to use them with "independent contractors" as well.

Agree 100%. Not sure why there I see reluctance to the use of "sex motels". It is relatively common in countries like Colombia and there are few that would have an issue with a MM couple (or even three parties) checking in. Most are security-conscious and will check to make sure that everyone is okay/safe before anyone leaves the premises. They provide a necessary service in many latino countries.

For that reason, I was thinking of a hotel in Poblado, simply for the ease of bringing willing companions back to my place, but I'm open to better suggestions if they line up with my goals.

Just an FYI that El Poblado hotels are probably the strictest when it comes to non-registered guests. Many will charge you a fee for the additional guest, up to the full cost of the night's stay, so this can get expensive (and they will not treat your "guest" very well, in my experience).

You may want to consider an AirBNB in neighbourhoods like Provenza, Manila or Castropol which are all easy walking distance to El Poblado that will be easier to entertain "guests". Check whether or not the location has security on site -- that will also play a factor, although most security guards are happy to look the other way in my experience.

Hi. Everything is on hold until the Omicron situation is sorted. A teaching job landed in my lap, so I have postponed my trip until July or August.  Anyone ever try Noom? I'm trying to lose weight.  😕  My goal is 40 lb by summer.

Sorry to hear that your travel is delayed. I was in Bogotá last week and was impressed how everyone is in masks -- except once in the clubs where it is open season.  Otherwise I felt very safe and enjoyed getting reacquainted with the city...had note been since before the pandemic began.

Good luck with Noom -- I hear great things!!

  5. No it is not.  It is a standard bathhouse set up with bar.  Depending on the day, often the bartender is available for "erotic massage". You will be charged additionally for any sex activity -- the idea is to get you worked up where you will pay more.

Keep in mind that, from my experiences, there is only one option on the menu for the massage. So it can be very hit or miss.

Don't know if anyone has been there lately, but I have been told that the Apolo is pretty run down. But take that with a grain of salt. The owner, a Cuban, is genuinely a nice guy and is sincere about running this business for the community.

  6. I was at Theatron on Saturday night and can attest that things are in full swing and operate as normal. There were perhaps 5 masks that I saw during the evening. Virtually everyone was maskless both in the central, open-air terrance and inside the interior clubs. Lotus (rooftop bar) is mixed on all nights now, and curiously there were no strippers this Saturday but I expect that to resume at some point.

Hardly any property (in Colombia or elsewhere) is going to allow you check-in at 5AM (for a reservation with check-in same date around 2-3PM). As rates are fairly cheap in Bgta, you make the reservation for the previous night and then state in the reservation or inform the hotel in advance that you will check-in late /past midnight. Then you will have no issues to check-in early in the morning and get a few hours of sleep in the room; much better than waiting in hotel lobby or elsewhere because you have been told to come back for check-in in the afternoon (been there, done that)

Apologies if I was not clear. Yes, I book ahead for the previous night of arrival in Colombia so I can go directly to the hotel from the airport and check in. If I arrive at 3am, then I need to book arrival for the previous day to ensure that I have a room to sleep in. But you need to communicate the late arrival with the hotel in advance.

The issue is that not all Colombian hotels allow you to check in outside of their fixed check in window so you need to confirm what is that time-frame with the hotel. If you stick with the large international chains you should be fine, but local establishments may not allow you to check in after midnight, for example. Better safe than sorry.

Final thought...the name of this forum is mispelled. Would be great to see it fixed:

Colombia: full list of hot spots

It's a major sore spot with the locals, so much so that they sell T-shirts to the tourists noting the difference :)

I just came here to add that I appreciate that this change happened ¡muchas gracias! Sorry it took me this long to notice. Heading back to my Medellín retreat for the winter, and cannot wait...

There are plenty of safe places South of the Rio Grande where you would be absolutely safe.

Agree 100%. Except putting your cell phone on the table in Colombia -- sorry but I cringe every time I see it and have watched horrified foreigners as their smartphones go dashing down the street with their new "owners". Please just put it away unless you truly need it :)

  10. This thread makes me think of the Colombian expression "No dar papaya".

It means don't put yourself in a situation where you may be taken advantage of, don't show wealth or draw unnecessary attention, a papaya being a rich, delicious fruit that you should not simply give away since then you cannot enjoy it.

    https://www.spanishdict.com/answers/151217/what-does-no-dar-papaya-mean

Often when someone recounts something bad that has happened, you will hear "Dio papaya" in response. It is somewhat victim blaming (fair observation) but the idea is very Colombian -- something precipitated the event, no fue por casualidad.

When in Colombia (and Medellin) remember "No dar papaya" and you will be just fine in many situations.

P.S. That includes putting your mobile phone on the restaurant or café table while dining. Big mistake in Colombia -- do not do it.

For instance, Laureles in this source shows as an area where you must practice "elevated caution". However, in mi research I have found unanimous opinions that Laureles is a safe hood. I am even considering renting my airbnb in there.

To answer your question directly, I would say there is excellent advice here for a first-time visitor to the city.

Agreed, the vaste majority of Laureles barrio south of the stadium is quite safe and I have never had any issues going about my business around that neighbourhood. Increasingly it is the barrio of choice for ex-pats and you will hear both English and German spoken regularly.

I would endorse many of the comments about certain neighbourhoods being "unsafe" in the sense that you are more likely to encounter potential situations. El Centro after dark and on weekends can be rough, and the Parque de luces is bad outside of office hours, but I have negotiated both situations. A little common sense goes a long way.

The one neighbouhood noted as a no-go zone is Trinidad (between the Olaya Herrera airport to the Medellin river) that is still controlled by narcos to move product though the city. Do not go there -- there is nothing to see there -- as the neighbourhood is still controlled by drug gangs who will know you are on the wrong turf.

Skip Trinidad and walk up to Belen barrio better Cra 30 and Cra 33 which is the newest up and coming neighbourhood with tons of cafes, shops and restaurants along its lively streets.

    3. The message (in Spanish) that is posted to the WhatsApp is a description of the location of the hotel. It can be confusing because he uses the names of the street and not the numbers (I believe that the hotel is between Calle Peru (55 Street)and Calle Zea (56 Street).  I can translate the message for you later today, but there is nothing special in the message that I have not posted about here.

    Have fun!

A quick search of the WhatsApp feed only showed voice messages for the weekly raffle and a weekend away at an estate (Finca) outside of Medellín in Copacabana (northern neighbourhood past Bello) since November.

The posted greeting below provides the location of the hotel using the traditional street names.

"We are now in service at Carrera 45 (El Palo) at #55-41  Hotel Bliss Suite on El Palo between Calle Peru (Calle 55) and Calle Bolivia (Calle 56)"

    Which would place you here

Apologies about the naming convention. Calle 56 is known as both Calle Zea and Calle Bolivar depending which neighbourhood you are in. So in this case,  the correct name would be Calle Bolivia since it is a direct connection from this location to Parque Bolivar.

Forget it! Most likely you will not accomplish it - or his price tag will prohibitively expensive. But rest assured that in Medellin there are plenty of hot guys that will be happy to meet up in exchange for cash. Just search the apps when you get there - or use the various listings for male scorts found in other threads.

Agreed 100%.  In the past I have made inquiries and the answer is either (A) absofreakinglutely no way or (B) sure for $200-$400 USD with a gift included. Most don't bother past that point (have not had someone that obsessed thus far).  The boys risk their employment if caught as it is against the rules in the signed agreement with the employers (Chaterbate and Flirt4Free are sister corporations).  For the long-term successful performers (like Dante Santos named above) it is not worth risking a lucrative career that he can do from home. Also, the vast majority of performers are straight and not interested in making cash on the side.

  14. @Latbear4blk has fantatic advice here.

    1. Send them a WhatsApp message requesting a specific boy(s) with the date you intend to be present. Give them at least 48 hours notice if you are being particular -- some of the boys live a distance from the hotel. The boys available in the hotel are usually posted daily to the WhatsApp account. I will check that as I am not currently following.

    2. Google Translate is a perfect solution (and I am certain they are familiar).  Many of the staff speak passable English but have a backup plan like Google translate just in case. The older Manager that leaves the voice messages does not speak a word of English to my best  knowledge.

Thank you for the tips. How do you find the long journey to Bogota? I'm flying out of Thunder Bay. The layovers are quite long. Merry Christmas.

I assume that you are doing the the direct flight to Bogota via Air Canada (apologies if incorrect) which take about 6 hours. It is nice to arrive directly at your destination, but landing in the middle of the night stinks. By the time you clear customs and have your luggage (BOG has one of the strictest baggage screening in the world) it is about 5am local time. I prefer to grab a room at a nearby airport hotel and get a few hours sleep before venturing into the city. El Dorado airport is in the west extreme of the city.

Check with your hotel when they will allow you to do the check-in, as they are not as flexible as we are used to in Canada or U.S.A. Plan your travel times accordingly. Fun fact--the word in Colombian spanish for Check-in is "check-in".

If you are transferring between flghts through either Panama or Mexico City (both are major hubs) then you may want to purchase a lounge pass where you can go relax between flights. Both airports are large and offer plenty of things to do while waiting for the next leg of the journey. I have flown through Panama City many times to arrive directly in Medellin and the layover was long, but the time went rather quickly. Take some entertainment to pass the time (book, music, podcasts, magazines).

    Merry Christmas!

  16. Maybe I can help set your mind to rest. Not that I can fix the coming wave of Omicron.

Colombia has discovered cases (as of December 20) of Omicron. All three were tourists in the cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta on the coast.

    https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/colombia-detects-three-cases-omicron-government-says-2021-12-21/

Currently there are two cruise ships off the coast of Cartagena with active Omicron cases. They are negotiating how to manage the situation (Colombia doesn't want them to disembark)

    https://thecitypaperbogota.com/news/cartagena-bans-crew-and-passengers-on-cruise-with-covid-cases/28955

As a fellow Ontarian (who just returned from Colombia -- I like my white Christmas) I can tell you that the biggest hurdle will be to ensure that you have adequate insurance as most Canadian providers use a clause that gives them the right to deny coverage when the Canadian government issues a travel advisory/ban. This occurred for Colombia on December 15. Happy to share details for supplemental Covid medical and cancellation/disruption coverage if you want to exchange details.

I still intend to return to Medellín(via Bogotá) in January, I just moved my ticket up by a week to accomodate some work happening at my place in the new year.

    Good luck with your decision.

Sillón Rojo is located on a major thoroughfare above Cerro Nutibara between Laureles and Belén neighbourhoods on Avenida 33.  The club located at

    Ave 33  #65b-22 Medellín, Antioquía

The club is above one of the many motorcycle shops along this busy street next to a pharmacy. Ring the bell on the left side of the door and wait to be buzzed in. Go to the top of the stairs and you have arrived.
