Olddaddy reacted to reader in The legendary Madrid
While posting about the Jim Thompson film in Beer Bar forum, I got to thinking about the Madrid restaurant in Patpong. Although he met his demise two years before it opened in 1969, Thompson would have felt right at home considering the clientele who frequented the place in its early days.  The Madrid also makes occasional appearances in the trip reports, particularly those of vinapu. And as for price, what more testimony do you need than that of Christian who finds it a good value. Here's some takes of how it's been remembered over time.

    Bangkok Post (August, 2013)

The ornate black door with the coats of arms and shields looks heavier than it is, and opens up from the gaudy seediness of Patpong Soi 1 into a world where time moves differently _ although not necessarily slower.

The Madrid bar and restaurant has evolved since it opened in 1969, then catering mostly to US soldiers fighting in Vietnam and later gaining a reputation for hosting pilots from the CIA's Air America and even as a place where covert operations were planned.
A woman who asked to be identified only as Jenny now runs Madrid; she took over the business from her Thai mother, who helped get the bar up and running with Jenny's American stepfather. The clientele was about 95% American in the old days, including many CIA and DEA agents and US embassy workers.

The most famous regulars were the Air America pilots who conducted clandestine operations against communists in Laos in the 1960s and 1970s. Most have now gone: Many have died, others have stopped drinking out of health concerns, and some have moved upcountry because they find Bangkok too expensive these days.

Pilots are still popular at Madrid, but these days they are the commercial rather than conspiratorial kind. This is helped somewhat by the fact Jenny's husband, Andre, flies for Vietnam Airlines.

Screenwriter Dave Walker, who calls his recent project The Poorest Man ''a Khmer Rouge story with a happy ending'', has been coming to the Madrid regularly since 1981. Of all the changes there, he says it's the people he misses the most.

''I miss the characters,'' he says.

''It was living history. The conversations here, you couldn't imagine. These guys really lived life.''

    Stickman (May, 2013)

One of the great dames of Patpong, Madrid opened in 1969 and has been popular with generations of expats. Hundreds of bottles of alcohol are stacked behind the bar, yet the single-shophouse Madrid with small booths along one wall is more restaurant than bar.

In a city with unlimited dining options, Madrid still compares well. Madrid opens early and the eggs Benedict is a favourite. There's a daily special but Madrid is perhaps best known amongst expats for its pizzas, amazing given that pizza is the one item of farang food that polarises expats. Who doesn't think the best pizza comes from their hometown?

The area above the bar is said to have been a CIA safehouse in the '70s, a place where clandestine meetings were held and planning for many missions over Laos carried out.

Easy to walk past, Madrid is located on the main Patpong soi, about 50 metres or so along on the left-had side if you enter from the Silom Road end.

    The Guardian (March, 2017)

There’s only one Vietnam veteran’s bar left in Patpong, the notorious red-light district. When Khun Daeng and her American GI husband opened the Madrid Bar and Restaurant in 1969, the first thing they did was swap the grand piano for a record player. Soon after, it became a hangout for CIA types. Men like Jack Shirley, a legendary former CIA official, drank here. The current owner, Jenny, Khun Daeng’s daughter, has not altered the decor since the Madrid’s hey-day, and it still serves the unappetising-looking but much-loved army dish known as SOS. This either means “shit on a shingle”* or “save our stomachs”, depending on who you ask. It is a mush of chipped beef, mixed with milk and gravy, slapped on toast.

    * I can attest that it was the former, from basic training to discharge. reader

    Teak Door blog (November, 2008)

The Madrid was an old CIA hangout during the Air America days. At that time, you most likely would run into Jack Shirley or Tony Poe downing a few beers in the Madrid. Tony Poe is who the Colonel Kurtz character from Apocalypse Now is based on. The photo below is an old one from the Lucy's Tiger Den. The walls at the Madrid are plastered with photos of customers new and old. Jack Shirley is on the right and Tony Poe is sitting with him to his left.

Does anyone know anything about Tarntawan Apartments ? Their website is still up but when I click on Reservations it comes up as invalid request and they aren't answering emails, just wondering if it's still open for business or temporarily closed or just closed down? I was going to refer them to a friend that's heading to Bangkok next year for 3 months.

    Have you been to Bali....??

I was there for 10 days...my 3rd time in Bali once in Jakarta. ...so much cheaper than Thailand. Same issue on apps, fake pics, so you have to screen them well. But some are so nice and it feels less commercial than Thailand.

But the biggest thing I think you'd like, every guy I hooked up with, went right to rimming. I'm not into it, don't rim....but if someone wants to rim, I'll let them, for a bit.

Plus there's cut (Muslims) and uncut (Balinese) guys there ....I like someone to drink with, so that's a bit of a challenge, lol

Olddaddy reacted to PeterRS in Train journeys and dilemma with bf
I hope you realise that paticular journey is crashingly boring! A very good friend who adores trains and train journeys did it. Said it was a total waste of time and money.
I've travelled around Europe by train and enjoyed amost all the trips. I've also treated myself to two non-European extravagant train trips.
First was the two day Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver across the Rockies to Banff. The Gold Leaf service with Panorama cars up top and dining underneath was magnificent. Meals were delicious and beautifully served. Passengers  don't stay overnight on board. Instead we were put up in a hotel in Kamloops. Sometimes you never believe your luck. I put on an app the fact that I'd be in Kamloops for one night. Extraordinary! One young Chinese gay guy who lived there saw it and came over for dinner and afters.

On my visit to Peru three years later I treated myself on the journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu by taking the Hiram Bingham train. This is more or less the equivalent of the Orient Express or the one that plies between Singapore and Bangkok - although much shorter. Fantastic experience! It leaves later than the other trains. Mimosas served before embarkation. Full a la carte breakfast in the dining car. Snacks in the open car at the back.
Also last train to leave in the late afternoon, preceded by a proper afternoon tea at the hotel by the entrance to the site. Four course a la carte dinner with wines and then a jazz band playing in the back car. Extravagant? Sure - but one of the little luxuries that help make life exciting!

I found Cusco one of the most fascinating cities I have visited. I'm sure most of us know the city's flag is the rainbow flag. The sense of history is stunning. Now I wish I'd spent more than 3 nights there. Were I to return, I'd love to explore more of the other valleys near Cusco.

Just hope to pick up old routine as pre 2020: in the there cool season (which also happens to be the cold wintertime here in EUR): go twice, for some 6-8 weeks (perhaps with some intermittent short visit to nearby other ASEAN- so to avoid need to get visa), still struggling now to find acceptable airfare for jan. and then end of year again-then hope to be able to again witness Loy Kratong. And hopefully without even the slightest hints of that covid or masks or the like.
This year/early spring went to ESpana for a few weeks but for me THailand does remain the best choice.
Just stay in BKK and amuse myself-mostly out of the Silom ghetto.

Its natural to grieve the first few days as the shock sets in and you will ruminate thoughts , leave it a few days and see how you feel.
If still no better then you should see your GP to talk to a counsellor.
But I'm sure after a few days you will get over it "so to speak.
I'm sure there's guys on here with psychology/counselling knowledge who could advise 💜💜

Just very recently, read yesterday I offered help to  a known guy in severe financial need by promised to hire for 4 days at above market rate. My reward - his entire time  with me was spent on his phone playing loud music out of it , even in bed and even at 4 a.m.
So deal was  cut short , surprise, by him citing my unreasonable demands like stop checking Facebook every 27 seconds.
In country I was raided there,s saying "if you help yourself,  God helps you too " , how true !

Yes, people who are using slimy tactics to embarrass others online should be punished. There was a group in the Vancouver area several years ago who would use a woman friend to develop a relationship as a woman with a guy on a chatline.. usually an older teen or twenties, then after a number of sessions tell him she's actually 14 and then try to arrange a meeting. If the guy agreed, he was confronted in a public area by young bullies who videotaped the confrontation and put it up online. They went too far once, entrapping an 18 year old with significant mental disabilities who invited the "girl"  to the ice rink where he worked and was confronted. There was absolutely no indication he had any sexual aims, but was rather just wanting to make a friend. He was fired from his job and shamed in the community. But some in the media took up his cause and I haven't heard of those "outers" since. Although they did entrap a police officer once who clearly wanted to have sex with a 14 year old. He was charged and convicted. And it is depressing that men go online everywhere in Canada trying find young teen girls.

Olddaddy got a reaction from vinapu in The do gooders trying to catch pedophiles
I have said this many times before, that I don't like using the word "boys" to describe the guys in Thailand.
Two things come to mind ,first I just finished watching a UK Facebook group of 2 guys and one big fat woman (Karen) catch a alleged old pedophile who thought he was talking to a 16yo boy but it was Karen apparently he was sending his cock pics to,  not a real guy 🙄
So they turn up on his doorstep and film him and then belittle him, "so you like boys do you ,you disgusting old bastard" they said
Now in reality he was not  doing anything wrong up to the point of...sending his xrated pics I believe.
Second incident this happened to me personally was I was in Grindr when a guy wanted my cock pics which I don't send as I'm a bottom, to cut a long story short it wasn't really a guy but a Karen who admitted to me she was hunting for pedophiles, she was disappointed when I said my taste was mature Asian guys ,
So I'm telling you this because lately there is a fad of groups and Karen's wanting to catch older guys interested in younger guys whether it's legal or not .
Now I despise pedophiles as much as them BUT  16yo is legal for same sex in Australia which I'm sure it's the same in the UK, but most of these Karen's would brand you a pedophile if you did meet a legal aged guy ,so where do you draw the line with these people?
