World Wildlife Fund calls on Thailand to ban ivory trade to save African elephants. BANGKOK — An international conservation group on Tuesday urged Thailand to ban all ivory trading, warning that rising demand for tusks is fueling an unprecedented slaughter of elephants in Africa. The World Wildlife Fund said “massive quantities” of African ivory are being imported illegally into Thailand, where they are carved into Buddhist statues, bangles and jewelry that are then sold to tourists or smuggled elsewhere. Although it is against the law to sell African tusks in Thailand, ivory from domesticated elephants can be traded legally. “Many foreign tourists would be…

The government in Thailand will not be looking forward to June, when America’s State Department releases its annual report on the trafficking of humans. As in recent years, Thailand’s section will make for nasty reading. It will, yet again, prove to be an embarrassment for America’s oldest ally in the region. http://www.economist.com/news/asia/21572800-long-standing-worker-abuses-get-some-serious-attention-deadly-cocktail

As has been illustrated by the various photo threads which have appeared in recent months, there is clear demand for pics of cute/handsome Asian guys wearing skimpy swimming trunks or just with bare backs (sorry abang, I know you want western guys!!). Threads have included (along with their viewer hits as of this morning) – Some Model Photoshots – 937 Snapshots for Beachlovers – 695 Best Kiss Contest – 2,813 Taipei Gay Parade 2012 – 2,487 Taipei Gay Parade 2011 – 2,573 It’s not difficult to find the others – because they tend to be among the most viewed of all the threads. Several points/suggestions I’d like to raise. 1. It seems a pity that these threads/photos disap…

Ever been told a "sick buffalo" story? Well now you can, if you are in the Chiang Mai area, check out the price of a buffalo and even buy one, to make sure the money is spent as intended! Returning from a trip to Doi Inthanon a couple of weeks back, the driver pointed out a place on the Chiang Mai-Hod road to me and said it was the Saturday Buffalo Market, where farmers from miles around come to buy and sell buffalo. Well, I had to see that - it's one of those places that you can end up regretting not seeing while you had the chance. Buffalo are not much used as agricultural animals now, and it's hard to see a market like this lasting for ever. It starts before dawn and…

For years, the advice has always been to use mosquito repellants containing DEET. Now, though, it seems these pesky creatures which make life misery for many are not so put off so easily by the smell of DEET. Indeed, researchers are now suggesting that alternatives will soon have to be found to protect against those nasty bites. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21519998 Use of DEET based repellants is still advised in high risk areas, though.

How do you keep in touch with your boy special or boyfriend? How often do you do this? For me, he sends me email ever few days and we talked 2-3 times each week. I enjoy hearing his voice if it is only 15 minutes. He also catches me up on all the family and friends. He also sends me photos once a week or more as he knows I like seeing him when I am not in Thailand so he takes photos at his work or at his home. It makes me happy to see these and keeps him in my memory a bit better. I do use Skype to talk to him but not the video call as he is on a cell phone. How often to you chat with the BF when you are away from LOS?

Every year during Songkran when many businesses are closed and many Thais are out of the country on holiday, the supply from two rigs supplying gas off Myanmar is halted for a few days to allow for pipeline maintenence. This year, though, for reasons unspecified, the maintenance will take place between April 4 and 12. Not unnaturally, being the hottest month, blackouts will occur unless major steps are taken to reduce demand. The shutdown will cut off a daily supply of 1 billion cubic feet of gas and affect all six power plants in western Thailand. The head of the the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand has asked consumers to turn off electrical appliances - …

To make a post on the "Wats" thread, I had occasion to look up Sala Keo Kou in Wikipedia. Included in the entry is this little gem: This is a picture of the main building at Sala Keo Kou It seems to me that, if the people who built the place call it Sala Keo Kou, and put that up on the wall, then that is what it is called. Any discussion of what it should be called is impertinent at best, arrogant at worst, and a load of pretentious, self-important bollocks either way.

There is note in The Nation today about Thai Air Asia adding a third daily flight between Don Mueang and Hong Kong. The service commences April 30 with the flight departing 3:40pm and arriving HKG 7:20pm. The return flight departs HKG 7:55pm and arrives back in Bangkok at 9:45 pm. Book from tomorrow until 3 March and there is a promotional one-way fare of Bt. 1,790 for flights from April 30 to February 9 next year. (But note it does not say if this fare applies for the return sector from HKG as well)! If you plan to make a trip in the peak autumn season, the new flight should be considerably cheaper than the existing flights. The two existing flights to HKG depart DMK a…

Just this week, a famous musical legend, Clive Davis, came out as being bisexual. It was nothing new to many in the industry and it was pretty common knowledge. It got me to think of a well-known rapper I know who has wild LA orgies with both male and female attendants and he and everyone else has sex with everyone. I have many gay friends who have been with him many times and use the term bisexual often. Speaking to a few young people in the past few months, many have said they have experimented with both men and women and many hate the terms that define their sexuality. Personally, I call myself gay but I also occasionally have sex with women. I have on more t…

There's a thread on another Forum about how the weather in Pattaya over the last month or so has been quite untypical for this time of year - cloudy, misty and very little sun. It's been the same in Bangkok. In fact, the weather has been quite unusual since December. In all the years I have been here, there have been several periods in those months when the temperature would fall quite considerably and it would be pleasant to have windows open, at least in the mornings. Apart from about 3 days, I cannot remember any colder spells this year; the weather has remained consistently hot. And the sun has been conspicuous by its absence. Each day there is perhaps 30 minutes of…

You know you will be going on holiday in, say, six months time. You know that the world currency markets are going crazy. The US$1 now buys almost ¥94 whereas three months ago it was ¥78. At the start of January, UK£1 got you nearly Bt. 50. Now it’s barely Bt. 45. In August last year, €1 purchased US$1.21. Last month it soared to $1.365 – the highest in more than a year. Now it is back down to around $1.32. The €/Baht swing has been less pronounced, but most of my income comes in US$. So how do you work out what to do about the money you have saved up for your holiday? Wait till the time comes and hope for the best? Convert now so you lock in your savings/losses? Convert…

I have been on a diet since the first of September and by weight has gone from 118K to 84K. I have not been doing any exercise, other then walking, as I find doing both diet and working out often does not work for me. I am ready to start working out now, along with my diet, and several friends have suggested riding a bicycle. I really don't think that is a safe thing to do in Thailand, and the recent death of the around the world couple kind of confirms that for me. http://road.cc/content/news/76476-uk-couple-riding-round-world-killed-thailand-just-weeks-after-their-film-accepted So question for the board and especially for Michael. Is it safe to ride a bike …

We have been working hard trying to find a nice balance on the site that benefits profile members, forum members and management. We have changed directions a few times over the course of the past few years. We will continue to evolve the site in order to make it better and more functional as well as use more social media tools. We will be downsizing the flirt banners at the top of the pages. They will remain there but only one row of guys and smaller size of photos. We have initiated gaythailandlive.com (our site but managed by Flirt4Free) to replace these banners which will be the main source of revenue from the site. All members will receive an email from gaythaila…

The Big Mac index was invented by The Economist in 1986 as a lighthearted guide to whether currencies are at their “correct” level. It is based on the theory of purchasing-power parity (PPP), the notion that in the long run exchange rates should move towards the rate that would equalise the prices of an identical basket of goods and services (in this case, a burger) in any two countries. For example, the average price of a Big Mac in America at the start of 2013 was $4.37; in China it was only $2.57 at market exchange rates. So the "raw" Big Mac index says that the yuan was undervalued by 41% at that time. Use this index by clicking on the link below to bring up an in…

The TAKE CARE!! Valentine Fundraising event held on Saturday 16 February 2013 at Ganymede Resort and Spa was indeed a grand success. As with all TAKE CARE!! fundraising events held for the past several years, we promoted it throughout the Pattaya community, at all the venues around Pattaya and Jomtien which receive our Safer Sex Packs, on various newsy websites, as well as on the several internet forums frequented by the Pattaya gay community. And, in every case, we have followed-up the events with a full report posted on these forums. We are most appreciative to the forums’ management for their support by providing the cyber-sites to access the wider community with news…

After a period of relative stability, the Baht has slowly been strengthening against the US$. In 2012 the rate appreciated about 3%. Last month alone, it rose almost another 3%, hitting Bt. 29.66 and getting close to the low of Bt. 29.35 reached in early 2008. Against the UK£, the rate has appreciated from a high of Bt. 50.22 on September 27 last year to 46.59 today. Blame for the rise is put variously on the deal to at least postpone the US debt ceiling crisis, a degree of speculation, and the new Japanese government’s policy of letting the Bank of Japan substantially weaken the $/¥ rate. A few months ago this stood at around ¥78 whereas it is now close to ¥94 (great f…

I like this little movie. It has no dialogue at all. You can show it to your Thai friends, if you like. It kind of symbolizes what some of us have to go through just to meet the right Thai guy. Yes, it doesn't always involve just money. Sometimes a twist of fate, a twist of wind and a little heart is all it takes in Thailand. It can be hard meeting the right Thai. This movie shows how that can happen with a simple piece of paper. Unfortunately, in our world, at our age, that piece of paper is often some denomination of Thai currency. We throw money everywhere, in bars and other places, always searching for that one elusive thing. Think of that while viewing this video…

11 million people visit Thailand every year. So which country outside of Asia visits Thailand the most? Coming in at number one is Australia with 520,090, followed by the United Kingdom at 670,904, the U.S. at 496,812, India at 494,223, Germany with 438,171, France at 339,201, and in seventh place is Sweden with 253,007. Notice anything about those numbers? All those countries are in the top 25 of the most populated in the world, except for Sweden with about 9.3 million residents. Which means that every year 2% of the population, or 1 out of every 50 Swedes, packs up and heads over 5,000 miles to Thailand. Well, now there is a proposition to send the elderly to Thaila…
