The very camp TV show Glee cleaned up at the Golden Globe Tv awards. Chris Colfer who plays the openly gay student won best male supporting actor has dedicated his win to the gay kids who are bullied at school. On youtube you can see a very moving video to kids on behalf of the Trevor foundation. Also others like Harry Potter star.. Here is a link to a wonderful gay version of an old favourite. Baby its cold outside. Chris is the one being seduced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTnwv2NN-DI&feature=fvw here is a cut and paste of the news of the awards Golden Globes glee for hit TV shows (UKPA) – 4 hours ago Glee and Boardwalk Empire were the…

We have a thread on the bars of yesteryear and how much more fun they were. Someone just sent me some memories of perhaps the reasons why our grandparents and great-grandparents had some fun times, too. Photo 1 A bottle of Bayer's 'Heroin'. Between 1890 and 1910 heroin was sold as a non-addictive substitute for morphine. It was also used to treat children suffering with a strong cough. Photo 2 Coca Wine, anyone? Metcalf's Coca Wine was one of a huge variety of wines with cocaine on the market. Everybody used to say that it would make you happy and it would also work as a medicinal treatment. Photo 3 A paperweight promoting C. F. Boehringer & Soeh…

According to The Nation today, a poll claims that a majority of Thai voters say they are willing to accept money from election candidates who want to buy their votes. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/home/Poll-says-majority-of-Thais-willing-to-sell-their--30146486.html I am not sure that 2,604 voters can be claimed to be a reasonable representative sample. I am also not sure of the validity of whatever I read in the newspapers in Thailand. But, if the voting pattern is even remotely representative, it bears out what many have said for a long time - that vote buying is the norm rather than the exception. I also find it somewhat strange that the heart of the …

  7. My friend and I went to Boyztown last night to take in some of the guys. He had an appointment with a guy from Panorama so we had a drink there before going to Funny Boys. As usual, the mamasan, Rose, is excellent. She found me a lovely boy and it didn't take long for me to take him off and make a booking for the next AM. I had a great time with him and was glad that I met him. When he came to my apartment today he was leaving and I asked where he was going. He said to the temple for Buddha. He said it was his birthday. Hearing this 1,000 times over the years I said, "Can I see your ID?" He pulled it out and he was not lying. Today was his 20th Birthday…

If you are like me and looking forward to real Deli Pastrami sandwich, you will have to wait longer IMHO. I was there the first night that Street Life opened , and had a Corned Beef sandwich because they did not have pastrami yet. It was an Ok sandwich, good size and fairly priced. However tonight I could not tell the difference between the Corned beef I got the first night and the Pastrami I ordered tonight. First , the rye bread is still awful and I know supposedly it is very hard to get Rye Bread but I have gotten far better Rye Bread in Bangkok. The bread was cut to thin and the meat evidently had to much moisture because the bread was soaked through a…

  10. I had dinner there with 2 very well-known celebs in the gay Thailand board arena. Both were enjoyable company. But, I was shocked at the great dinner we had. It was a soup, salad, main course and desert and all for 285 baht. It was absolutely delightful and well worth every penny! They have several things to choose from and you can mix and match! Highly recommended!

Rich Man Poor Man is a great "dinner" style restaurant in Jomtien on Soi 9. It is very laid back and relaxed. The service was efficient and quick. We had chicken fingers for appetizer and it was good. I had a Chicken Fried Steak and it was great and came with plenty of veggies. I also had their pecan pie which was the best one I have ever tasted in Thailand. Bar none, the pie was authentic and yummy. I have not met any place or person in LOS that can compete with this Pecan Pie. I have heard that night time it gets a little loud and rowdy but we were there at lunch and it was quite peaceful and relaxing. For you sports nuts, they have the NFL games l…

I had never heard of Charlie Rose until a few months ago when his programmes began to be aired on True. Now, I am a convert to his quiet, probing style of questioning and the quality of many of his guests. Yesterday he did an illuminating interview with the author Karen Armstrong which I found fascinating viewing. Ms. Armstrong writes about religion, a subject she knows pretty well having been for some years a nun, a called which failed her as, she said, she could never find God! In her writing, she has the knack of making historical religious figures come alive as real people. Her books include “A History of God”, "Jerusalem” and her short histories of Buddha and the…

I must have missed the announcement last year that a new airline will open this month. This is not the joint venture between THAI and Tiger. It's seemingly a new independent budget carrier, but offering a few more extras. According to the incomplete website: "CTA think all passengers are royal people. Hot meal, High quality coffee, liquor service." It presently has one Airbus A320 which will start flying between BKK, Muan (near S. Korea's Kwangju) and Seoul's Incheon airport on January 30. The website says it will add 2 Boeing 747s in April and new routes - Dubai, Mumbai, Cochin, Clark (Manila), Timpu (Bhutan), Phuket and Colombo. Hopefully these 747s are not the on…

Good on you, Clarence W. Dupnik! Following the fatal shootings is Tucson, Az, 5 days ago, he’s the one, you’ll recall, who condemned "the anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country". The next day he called Arizona the "Tombstone of the United States" because of its lax gun laws, and berated those who "try to inflame the public 24 hours a day" with "rhetoric about hatred, mistrust, paranoia of how government operates". Mr, Dupnik has been the sheriff in Tucson for more than 30 years. Following these horrible events, it has been interesting to see the reactions of those often deemed to be amongst the most strident political commentators in the US. Brit…

The flooding currently ravaging Australia is the most cataclysmic in more than 100 years. To put it in some sort of persepective, here are two excerpts from blogs on a New York Times site. Inevitably, the comparisons with the response in America to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina continue. http://community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2011/01/13/world/asia/13australia.html Also inevitably, the issue of global warming comes up, as does the increasing frequency of such climate-related national disasters. One American correspondent even goes so far as to say the “traditional insurance regime is no longer viable as the primary mechanism for dealing …

I think most people will agree that two of the most stunning buildings in the world over the last 20 or so years have been the Frank Gehry designed Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Both are titanium clad, they are more like sculptures than box buildings. Both work amazingly well in achieving their objectives, and both have become iconic structures. Sydney's Opera House is another iconic building - although it seems true to say that as an opera house, it nowhere near delivers what it should have. Now, however, Frank Gehry has come up with yet another iconic structure for Sydney, a building he has designed for the University o…

Tomorrow morning (9:00 pm EST Friday evening ) Anderson Cooper hosts a CNN special marking the 30th anniversary of AIDS. Also featured are guests Sir Elton John, Sharon Stone, Mo'Nique and Margaret Cho. We have lived with HIV/AIDS for so long, it's sometimes hard to believe that this disease only emerged 3 decades ago. Hundreds of books have been written about the disease and how it started. The best, in my opinion, is journalist Randy Shilts' And The Band Played On - a harrowing account of the unfolding epidemic that highlights the fears and indifference and disbelief of so many people, starting with Ronald Reagan but also including the commercial sex operators. The …

With the price of oil shooting up towards US$100 a barrel again, several airlines have started raising their fuel surcharges. Weight is now such a major factor for airlines, with excess baggage requiring extra fees almost universally and on-board carry-on bags subject to strict weight limits by some carriers. It therefore seems to me basically unfair that an Asian weighing between 50 and 60kgs should have to pay exactly the same fuel surcharge as someone weighing 120 kgs or more. After all, the airline needs more fuel to get the heavier guy off the ground. I have read about one US airline which has been trying (successfully?) to have seriously overweight people pay fo…

The wife of Japan's Prime Minister, Naoto Kan, who took office last summer, has said she would not marry him again in another life. Nobuko Kan said she would want to do something completely different if she had another chance to choose. She is famous in Japan for her elegant kimonos - and sharp tongue. The prime minister once described her as his opposition at home. Speaking to reporters in Tokyo she said she regularly scolded him. "I've already lived this life once. It would not be interesting to do the same thing again. I would rather live a totally different life," she said . . . "My husband sometimes says to me: 'I really hate going to the Diet because everyon…

The old Kaos, Villa Rouge is now open as a beer bar. The new decoration looks Fantastic! I love the way they took the boys from the large sign and moved in inside as wall decor. The bar is large and open and lighted. It brings new life to that area of the Soi. They had a soft opening tonight. Lots went in for drinks and to support the bar. Good luck to the new owners of Treet's Bar!
