If you see the same vendor, at the same place, day after day (or night after night), and it is popular with locals, then I think you can assume it is a safe place to eat.

I don't see them using the term "straight". They use "gay" and "man". Depending on the business establishment or context, "gay" suggests either someone who is effeminate to some degree or other, or someone who bottoms. "Man" means straight-acting or someone who does not bottom. The term won't tell you much about his sexual orientation.
The Thai way of seeing things is to describe gender behaviour, not attraction.

Well, if you were sitting or standing in Hoti Male beer bar last night, I think you’d be hard pressed to say anything but a resounding “no”. The crowd—staff included—were a bit raucous,  waiters were getting offed, customers were getting drunk, someone was celebrating a birthday,. The adjacent show bars were doing a respectable business and the atmosphere was festive.
I can only speak of Bangkok, but the older crowd (of which I am one) doesn’t seem to have any problem ponying up the 2K off fees and booking massages at the two dozen plus shops in the area.

Loy Krathong was a pleasant occasion on Jomtien Beach last week, with its lanterns, krathongs and children playing in the sea. A family occasion, gentle and very Thai. That evening lingers in my memory as London freezes on my arrival back home.

What a silly comment - unless it is made specifically about that very small group whom some regard as sexpats! There is also a huge group of expats of various nationalities who live in Thailand for whom sex is far from the primary issue. Even if it were, that hardly diminishes their experience from work and other charitable experiences in their home countries.
I have an American friend who is married to his partner and they have been together for around 35 years. He has a great deal of experience as one of the most senior executives in his company. They certainly have many gay friends but never visit gay establishments. On the other hand they do have spare time which they would willingly contribute.
