Racist towards which race/ethnicity, or to foreigners in general?

There’s no xenophobia. High-spending foreign tourists are very welcome.

The racism seems to be based on skin-colour. The upper classes are ‘white’ and we heard people remark disdainfully about non-whites and persons of mixed-race. The common epithet was “dirty”. For instance, they looked down on Brazilians yet were unbothered about Venezuelans (who tended then to be middle-class and light-skinned).

do think that Miraflores a good candidate is for an apartment.

Miraflores is a good choice. It’s an upscale neighbourhood and safe.

  2. I can’t speak to the comparison with the cities you mention @iendo but Lima is a very interesting and big city.

There are many sophisticated restaurants and bars. Culture and nightlife can be quite glamorous. Streets seemed safer than in Buenos Aires. Travel to other cities in Peru is easy from Lima.

Our visit was pre-pandemic. We had no problems as a gay male Caucasian couple (my partner is much younger).  One aspect of Peruvian society really surprised me, however: racist attitudes prevailed among the upper classes, and racist remarks were readily made by professional people.

  3. So true @Slvkguy

In Latin America, I only stay in hotels with good security that demand visitors register their ID at reception before being allowed into the elevators.

Even worse if you’re in an unsecured AirBnB or hotel with no security.

It bemuses me when posters new to Latin America ask for recommendations of hotels and AirBnB places that don’t check their visitors and their identity. However discreet the poster may be, some small embarrassment does not outweigh the considerable risk of being beaten and robbed by strangers

Am I only the only Aussie to just recently hear of her,

I believe so @Olddaddy. She’s the great-aunt of a friend of mine. IRL she’s just as crude and salacious…which I find a bit much. It’s as if she is trying deliberately to shock others, rather like an immature teenager running off at the mouth.

There doesn't seem to be any agencies etc?

I find that comment odd. There are various model agencies in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. You would of course have to explain what you want and pay their full fees.

If you want to find someone ‘on the cheap’ then the suggestion above is good as would be searching through Instagram for willing guys.

once I'm finished, I'm finished.… I don't have the patience…to keep waiting for the other person to get off…I do meet some…that aren't paid hookups, it feels awkward and I'm always asking....you need money to get home

I sympathize with you @floridarob but there’s no reason to feel awkward.

I was brought up to ALWAYS drive my date home at the end of the evening. Or at least, to offer cab fare home.

  7. Good for you @12is12  It is an efficient way to find a guide and get some company when you visit a country for the first time. And I agree that it avoids wasting a lot of time in the first few days somewhere by endless online chat.

I did this also on my first visits to Argentina. I found 2 guys who on paper were promising and the suggested fee was reasonable fee (with me picking up all costs). One was Marcelo (proficient in English, goodlooking but very argumentative) but I dropped him when I found he’d tried to cheat me with a grossly inflated restaurant bill. Marcelo was still active as a guide for foreign visitors 5 years ago. The second guy was Alexis (no English, short but muscled blond) who was pleasant, informative and helpful. He insisted on walking me back to my hotel after our first dinner…eagerly stripped off, sucked me off and stayed for breakfast.

  8. Nice of you to say @Latbear4blk but I always figure “What’s the worst that can happen?”

When I talk to a stranger, I say something and then ask him a question. It can be something as silly as “I really like those shoes (in a nearby store window). What do you think?”

If the guy is not interested, he may ignore me and move on. If a guy is interested, he makes some reply and we move on together…

  9. I keep it simple and easy @davet and I smile.

One early afternoon in BA I saw a cute young man on the street as I was walking into a supermarket. I saw him again when I was selecting some wine. So I smiled and said I was looking for a good bottle as I’d been invited to a dinner party. I then asked him what plans he had for the evening. We ended up going back to my place.

Another time, it was late afternoon (the hour of ‘merienda’) when I was on a busy street and a handsome young man asked if I was “free”. I didn’t want to make assumptions so I invited him for a snack. As we talked, I said “I like a younger man” and smiled; he was a quick study and said he liked an older man.

I was shy as a teenager but one day I decided it was stupid to be shy. So I made myself talk to strangers and ask questions. IME most people are friendly and happy to talk.

Do not come to Buenos Aires looking for paid sex right now. If you can not hide your Gringo-ness, they will definitely try to take advantage of you.

Thanks for taking the time to write @Latbear4blk about the current situation in Buenos Aires.

I haven’t been back in some time and I’m intrigued by your observation. My view over the years of visiting regularly was that the legal sex industry in Argentina continued to thrive, either despite or because of the bouts of rapid inflation and the economic crises.

Admittedly I had considerable success with what I term ‘amateurs’. They were young men that I met on the street, at the gym or in the malls. Some seemed to be especially interested in meeting a foreigner, an older man. Some even made the first approach. It helped that I speak Spanish and I dressed well. But I recognize that for them my prime attraction was my enhanced economic and spending power as a foreigner.

Nonetheless, I met a wide range of middle-class, employed young men as well as handsome university students. I was happy to entertain them of an evening and pick up numerous dinner checks, as many proved excellent companions. And I have fond memories of taking the very best guys on trips with me, away from Buenos Aires to beach resorts in Uruguay and Brazil.

It would be a real shame if times have so changed that presentable, young Argentine men are no longer interested in spending time with foreigners and earning some extra cash.

In every moroccan town it is possible to meet a guy and have some fun together.

I’m glad that Morocco has proved so enjoyable for you @bert but will you elaborate please?

Are you fit-bodied, handsome and young, so there’s no obvious discrepancy between you and the Moroccan guys you meet? Where do you go with the guy to have fun - your hotel, his place? Do you negotiate all the details beforehand and agree on what you’ll do together?

I am looking so forward to this movie.

Me too. I saw Elvis in his prime. It was my first trip to Las Vegas, and Elvis performed in his white leather-catsuit. He was extremely sexy.

(And at the risk of sounding like an old person who remembers the value of a dollar, I recall that dinner in the casino cost $4, but we each had to pay a supplement of $4 as Elvis was performing.)

Maybe they went to dinner @Riobard?

9pm is the most popular time to eat dinner in Barcelona restaurants in the week. And actually it can be difficult to reserve dinner in a good restaurant later than 9pm…unless it’s on a Friday or Saturday night, or at the beach in Summer

The boss of Heathrow, one of the world's largest international airports, is quoted in the article as stating it could take 18 months to be fully staffed once again. 18 months? In my book, this man should be fired.

You are being far too critical @PeterRS  There are 3 major reasons why it will take some considerable time.

    • The UK now has more job vacancies than unemployed people seeking work.
    • Staffing at airports (with many functions being sub-contracted) is even more complicated than it is for airlines.
    • In the UK, any new employee with access to the airport has to get a security clearance. This requires a check of the last 5 years employment history, with confirmation from each employer. As you may imagine, in the pandemic many employees left unpaid jobs and took alternative (and/or short-term) employment. Any failure to confirm a period of employment prevents security clearance being given. (Airlines did recently ask the UK Govt to relax this rule, but it refused.)

my first BCN trip without a visit to Thermas because of monkeypox.…but still it is a struggle because they probably go to sauna as well...almost all of my contacts are from Thermas...

I’m no advocate of celibacy @young11 but as this is a nasty condition, I feel you’re wise to minimise contact.

Perhaps this is the time to hire a well-regarded independent? I’d suggest you both take a shower before any interaction: that way, both of you will be reassured by the absence of a rash.
