    Best Burger in Bangkok

At least once during every trip I succumb to the siren call of the Roadhouse BBQ (Surawong at Rama IV) for what I consider the best burger in town. But what I particularly find attractive is the price. For what you'd be asked to fork over at Burger King down the road for their top of the line burger you get something much tastier and substantial. I think of it as a frugal man's luxury. It comes with cole slaw for 325 baht. But what makes it special is the generous paddy of Wagyu beef cooked expertly to order. You can get fries for 75 baht but I'd opt to pair it with the bacon baked beans for 80. What's a burger without beer and the pints starts as low as 130 for a Chiang and 140 for my favorite draft from Japan. The atmosphere lives up the name: dark wood, spacious seating and coupled with friendly service.

  2. From VN Express The construction of the T3 domestic terminal at HCMC's Tan Son Nhat International Airport is set to finish in April 2025, two months ahead of schedule, in time for the Reunification Day holiday April 30. According to Le Khac Hong, the head of the project management board, in order to shorten the schedule and bring the project to completion by April 30 next year, the investor and contractors are determined to intensify manpower, machinery, equipment, and construction efforts. Covering a total construction area of 112,500 sq.m., the terminal is designed to have an annual capacity of 20 million passengers, with a scale of one basement floor and four above-ground ones. It is expected to help double Tan Son Nhat's operational capacity, thus reducing traffic congestion both inside and outside the currently overloaded airport.

I think Roadhouse does an excellent pulled pork sandwich also. As for burgers, there's Mash on Convent Rd, not far from Silom Rd. Burgers are pretty much all they serve & I think they are very good. The place has a trendy 'industrial' decor & a big selection of beers on tap. Mash is situated between 2 open-front Thai joints so it's easy to miss.

  4. Yes, dear, you call me, so I came. I like all last your posts: clear hysteria without any attempt to decline any of my fact. Because I say truth. And that make you even more hysterical. Remember: Ukrainian conflict is created by West and sponsored by West. This is all your fault. Fault of your silence in 2014 - 2022. The West doesn’t care about Ukraine, about “women and children” - the West is saving the Ukrainian regime by supplying the country with weapons and paying mercenaries. So stop wringing your hands in hysterics. The West, primarily Obama, who allowed the US to inspire and financially support the coup in Ukraine, and Nuland, who was the ideologist of this coup, are responsible for what is happening in Ukraine - from the coup to the death of civilians. “Nobody is pushing this war more than Nuland,” the Tesla co-founder Elon Musk wrote on the social media site X last February. "Modern diplomacy" about Nuland: "The general impression of Nuland is of an inveterate ‘hawk’ and Russophobe fired up by neoconservative ideology and American exceptionalism who precipitated the Russian intervention in Ukraine and is largely responsible for fueling the ongoing war. Of course, there is no denying that Nuland played a key role in the regime change in Kyiv 10 years ago."

  5. That's a compliment...100 times better than the shit you're spewing..... Here is what is going to win the elections, the independents, Trump is the extreme of the extremist: Worries about political extremism or threats to democracy have emerged as a top concern for U.S. voters and an issue where President Joe Biden has a slight advantage over Donald Trump ahead of the November election, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll showed. Some 21% of respondents in the three-day poll, which closed on Sunday, said “political extremism or threats to democracy” was the biggest problem facing the U.S., a share that was marginally higher than those who picked the economy - 19% - and immigration - 18%. Biden's Democrats considered extremism by far the No. 1 issue while Trump's Republicans overwhelmingly chose immigration. Extremism was independents' top concern, cited by almost a third of independent respondents, followed by immigration, cited by about one in five. The economy ranked third. During and since his presidency, Trump has kept up a steady drumbeat of criticism of U.S. institutions, claiming the four criminal prosecutions he faces are politically motivated and holding to his false claims that his 2020 election defeat was the result of widespread fraud. That rhetoric was central to his message to supporters ahead of their Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Overall, 34% of respondents said Biden had a better approach for handling extremism, compared to 31% who said Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. The poll helps show the extent to which Biden's re-election bid could rely on voters being motivated by their opposition to Trump rather than enthusiasm over Biden's candidacy.

  6. “We both” are supporters of justice and retribution. The regime that came to power in Ukraine as a result of a coup in 2014 must disappear. The people who led the coup and killed or allowed 16,000 Russians to be killed under Western praise from 2014 to 2022 in eastern Ukraine must be punished. Why haven’t you written about “genocide and murder of women and children” for 8 years? Why has your tongue been in your ass this whole time form 2014 till 2022? Or maybe you can tell us why the West persuaded Ukraine in April 2022 at negotiations in Istanbul not to conclude a peace treaty? Then there would be not 2 years, but 2 months of conflict, and 95% of those who died during this time would be alive. Russia had not yet recognized the occupied Ukrainian lands as its territory at that time and was ready to return them. All that was needed was to agree to the neutral status of Ukraine and guarantees of non-entry into NATO. But Johnson urgently flew to Kyiv and demanded not to sign a peace treaty. Ukrainians are now paying with their deaths for Western political intrigues. The United States considers some events on the opposite hemisphere of the planet a threat to its security, and suddenly decided that Russia will allow a NATO country to appear four hours away by car from Moscow? The West doesn’t care about Ukraine, about “women and children” - the West is saving the Ukrainian regime by supplying the country with weapons and paying mercenaries. So stop wringing your hands in hysterics. The West, primarily Obama, who allowed the US to inspire and financially support the coup in Ukraine, and Nuland, who was the ideologist of this coup, are responsible for what is happening in Ukraine - from the coup to the death of civilians. On the photo: Nuland distributing food in Kiev for press shot, during coup in Kiev, winter 2024. Ukraine pays for the exorbitant ambitions of the governments you have chosen, gentlemen. And for the actions of the puppet regime you installed. On the photo: vice-president (yet) Biden in the chair of chairman of Ukrainian parliament instructing first "government" of Ukraine after coup.

  7. The boys from Cambodia and Laos can converse in Thai because their native languages are similar to Thai. The Burmese lad was able to tell me he could not understand Thai as his language is completely different. His bar was 100% Burmese. Talking to another customer we both formed the impression that a proportion of the boys have only recently arrived to work in the bars and are rather unsophisticated as regards to gay sex and it can be difficult to establish their orientation. On my second visit to the Complex I offed a boy from Laos who could speak English and had worked bar 6 months and who was able to tell me he was versatile, which proved to be the case during a LT off (400 to the bar, boys tip 2000).

  11. It's really a shame. I'd happily give you the distinguished Gen. David Petraeus Award for Military Propaganda and Bullshit. But I already did. So how I do honor you for more lies and bullshit? Comments from a member of Ukraine’s negotiating team help clarify why initial peace negotiations collapsed Speaking of Petraeus, he's as good a symbol as any of the US military industrial complex. Which the group that wrote that article, Responsible Statecraft, rails against. So I am sympathetic to your general argument about US militarism. A short hand way to say it is that if Petraeus is for it, it is probably a war mongering bad idea. Like the surge in Iraq. I am 0 % surprised that Petraeus' cheerleading for Ukraine's 2023 offensive did not turned out as planned. With Petraeus, it never does. But your bullshit and advocacy of genocide is even worse, and just as counterproductive. Here's the key points from the Ukrainian negotiator that refute your bullshit. And underscore how counterproductive your advocacy of genocide is, if your goal is to prevent hundreds of thousands of Russians from dying. And prevent your sorry fucked up stagnant economy from getting even worse and less affordable. The answer to the least question is a no brainer. NO. Ukrainian society will not accept a peace deal that offers neutrality to end the war. Why? Because Ukraine is a democracy, and 90 % of Ukrainians are against that idea. Ain't gonna happen. May as well start choosing which Russians get turned into fertilizer next. And figure out how Russians that are not part of Vlad's kleptocracy are gonna deal with the skyrocketing and unaffordable inflation and interest rates. And with Biden's victory. One of the reasons Trump will lose is most Americans have no reason to reward Vlad's genocide by electing a weak liar who will bow down to him. Vlad's genocide, mass murder, torture, and rape in Bucha no doubt contributed to Ukraine's lack of trust in Genocide Man. But that was early days. At the start of the war it was still fluid as to whether Ukrainians wanted to join NATO. Now it is not. After a few years of Vlad's genocide, mass murder, rape, and torture, the issue is closed. Ukrainians have made up their minds. And you state, in writing, you want more genocide, more mass murder, and more retribution. You are not personally advocating the rape and torture of Ukrainians, and the murder of children. But when Russian soldiers are involved, that just comes with the territory. Vlad's sadistic army seems to be good at that. If it is possible to get 99 % of Ukrainians to not believe a word Putin says and be adamant about joining NATO and the EU, you stupid idiots will figure it out. You have clearly succeeded where Gen. Petraeus and US militarism failed. Congratulations! Couldn't happen to a more genocidal guy.

You and Caustic Communist are one and the same! 🤡 🤡 Hint: Steven never wrote "We both" so there's only one possible meaning for those quotation marks. Tip: The concepts of justice and retribution are mutually exclusive. However, since the Russian system of justice is not at all just and fair, I can see why you combine these two words. 🤣

  16. Fine. Have it you way. You win. Kill millions more Russians. Go ahead. Do it. Fuck up your economy even more, You want 20 % inflation? 30 % interest rates? 50 % bankruptcies? Go for it. You win. How bad do you want to fuck yourselves? How many dead Russians do you want? Go ahead. I'll just sit back and be amazed. "How cruel. How sadistic. How utterly stupid. What a fucked up people. How fucking mean!" In fairness, you're not alone. As you keep saying, the US did it in Iraq. I was amazed at the stupidity of that, too. And it sure did backfire on W. and on the US. If you want to fuck yourselves even more, be my guest. Nearly 90% of Ukrainians oppose territorial concessions to Russia - poll Only a completely stupid Russian who buys Putin's bullshit completely, or maybe is afraid of expressing dissent, would believe Boris Johnson and Barack Obama did that. But if you want to blame it on them, go ahead. You'll probably just feed their egos. Let them think they are that powerful if you want. Go ahead. Kill more Russians. See if I care. See if anyone in the world cares. Master Xi will just tug on the leash he has his sadistic pit bull's testicles in if Vlad gets too far out of line. Like when the sadist was seriously thinking about tactical nuclear war. Meanwhile, Ukrainians will plea to the UN and the world, "These people are genocidal. These people are rapists. These people murder children. These people steal children. We can not trust these people. We can not make peace with these people." And the UN and the world agree. That's very clear. Except to you. If you want to believe none of that, go ahead. Kill as many Russians as you want, and destroy your economy as much as you want. Barack Obama and Boris Johnson did this. It has nothing to do with Vlad's genocide. Michelle had no idea her hubby was that powerful. And no one in the UK even suspected Boris Johnson was that competent.

  18. From VN Express / AFP Hundreds of people forced to work in an online scam center in the Philippines were rescued in a raid on Thursday that also saw eight suspects arrested, according to police. Acting on a tip from a Vietnamese man who alleged to have escaped the sprawling compound north of capital Manila, police said they unmasked an operation where suspected victims of human trafficking were forced into conducting various online scams. "The rescued workers told us (the company) engages in love scams, romance scam, cryptocurrency scams and other scam activities," said Gilberto Cruz, executive director of the crime task force that led the pre-dawn raid. "The victims were controlled by having their passports confiscated so they were unable to leave." Police found 432 Chinese nationals, 371 Filipinos, 57 Vietnamese, eight Malaysians, three Taiwanese, two Indonesians and two Rwandans at the site. Victims have reported traveling across the region, often on the pretense of romance or high-paying jobs but finding themselves forced instead to cajole people into plowing money into fake investment platforms and other ruses. The Philippines police said a Malaysian worker had also sought help after allegedly being held against his will at the same address in Bamban. At the center, a complex of 36 office buildings and dormitories, the victims were engaged in various online scams under threat of physical harm or other punishment, the authorities said. "The (online gaming) workers who failed to achieve their quota... were physically harmed, deprived of sleep or locked up inside their rooms," Cruz said.

  19. My last visit to Pattaya was in 2022. Before that I was there in 2019, and before 2019 I came from 2009 to 2016 every year several times. According to my impressions, from 2016 to 2019 Pattaya seriously sank as a bar business; in 2019 there was a feeling of fatigue and depression everywhere. The visit in 2022 brought a double impression. On the one hand, depression is no longer felt. Business came to life, became more energetic, one might even say more professional. On the other hand, business has become mechanical, guys are more indifferent. They don’t even try to imitate interest in you, they work like at the cash register at McDonald’s - the main task is to get your order as quickly as possible. Immediately after this, interest instantly disappears. I remember with nostalgia the host bars of the early 2010s, when I came to the bar and felt like a welcome guest, I was treated and entertained. None of this exists anymore. Now I am a visitor, not a guest.

  20. There you go again. You vomited propaganda all over this board. You keep confirming my point. The UN says Ukraine has raped children, and killed children, and stolen children. Your response, every time, is to ignore what the UN says and blame everything on the US. Jews are Nazis. Boris Johnson, who England fired, somehow had the mystical ability to change the course of history in Ukraine. He convinced the Nazi Jew to do whatever. It's all crazy bullshit and lies. And maybe you actually do believe all this nonsense. I suppose if I were Russian and I knew that 90 % of Ukrainians are now desperate to join NATO and the EU because of all the genocide and murder and rape and torture and stealing of children by Russians, I might want to believe Vlad's genocidal bullshit, too. You are right that at various points along the way conflict perhaps could have been avoided. And you are right the way to do that would have involved Ukraine pledging neutrality. Maybe they could have trusted Vlad not to commit genocide, like he has now. We'll never know. But we do know that a decade ago the majority of Ukrainians were against joining NATO. What changed? One very simple thing. Vlad's invasion. Vlad's genocide. Vlad's mass murder. Vlad's cruel soldiers raping women and children and stealing children and shooting them in the head and back. When the UN calls out your butcher, you say it is all lies. And yet 90 % of Ukrainians believe these lies, and see the cruel mass murder with their own eyes. Putin should be fired and jailed for genocide and mass murder. But if you don't want to do that you should fire the sadist for being the stupidest and most awful dictator ever. Somehow he figured out how to get almost every Ukrainian to hate Russia, to want Russians dead, and to be overwhelmingly clear that they want nothing to do with that murdering genocidal monster. And with Russia. How did your incompetent sadist manage to fuck that up so badly? Now your incompetent sadist has to kill his own people, Russians, in huge numbers, just to avoid losing. And your economy is a piece of shit. Interest rates are through the roof. Inflation is through the roof. People only tolerate your piece of shit economy because they have no choice. Except for all the talented people who have fled your fucked up piece of shit economy because they don't see a future and don't want to be jailed or turned into fertilizer. What a piece of shit incompetent leader your sadist is. How could he figure out how to get Ukraine to hate Russia so deeply and permanently? You might want to consider this question: How did your sadist fuck up Russia so badly? How did he make it so that Ukraine hates Russia, and now Russia needs to process a huge number of its own men into fertilizer simply not to lose a war that has made you look weak and stupid, and has made your economy a boiling mess of skyrocketing interest rates and bankruptcies and inflation? How could one genocidal sadist make such an awful mess that will cripple Russia for the rest of your lives? If not tear it apart? But, no. You two sickos want MORE GENOCIDE. You want more killing. You want retribution. You want murder. Vlad even sounds like he wants nuclear war. You want MORE GENOCIDE. No wonder Ukrainians don't trust you, want nothing to do with you, and will defend themselves and kill you for as long as you keep up with your genocide. instead of trying to comprehend why Ukrainians have a problem with genocide and mass murder and rape and torture and stealing children, all you want to do is bitch about Obama and Boris Johnson. No wonder Ukrainians don't trust you. No wonder Ukrainians feel they can't make peace with cruel people who blame Putin's genocide on Barack Obama. How many Russians do you want to turn into fertilizer for your retribution? 500,000? Five million? How many Ukrainians do you want to rape, torture, and kill for your retribution? Do you want to nuke Berlin? Paris? London? New York? Your incompetent sadist keeps talking about it. Because he knows he is failing, and he has nothing else. You can bitch and moan all you want about Boris Johnson and Nazi Jews. All it does is keep the bullshit and lies flowing. And Ukrainians will defend themselves and kill you. If you think genocide is a solution - WHICH YOU DO - nothing will get better for you. Your economy will continue on its disastrous course. Your men will be turned into fertilizer. All because of your cruelty and your genocide. We both agree that it is a problem that 90 % of Ukrainians despise your monster so much for his genocide that there is no way they will trust Putin and trade land for peace. Ain't gonna happen when 90 % of Ukrainians are against it. It should be clear that most Americans, me included, would rather not fund another forever war. Most Americans want to tie funding to diplomacy, and push Ukrainians to consider how to achieve peace. The polls are very clear about that. But the problem is 90 % of Ukrainians say, "Putin is committing genocide. We don't trust him, and can't make peace with him" The UN agrees. And you want to blame it on Barack Obama and kill more. And you think more genocide, more killing, and more retribution will solve this problem? This idea is cruel, sick, and very stupid. Meaning it is what Putin will do.

  21. Until 2019, Russia repeatedly warned that Ukraine’s accession to NATO was unacceptable for Russia’s national security, that it was a “red line”, crossing which would cause irreversible consequences. But under the first president of the puppet regime of Ukraine after the coup, Poroshenko, an article on joining NATO was included in the Ukrainian constitution to the applause of the West in 2019. From that moment on, the consequences of such a decision could no longer be avoided. By the way, the people who led the coup in Ukraine - Prime Minister of the first government Yatsenyuk and the first "president" Poroshenko - quickly realized what consequences awaited them after the start of the military conflict. Yatsenyuk moved to Washington. Poroshenko was less fortunate - he tried to leave Ukraine three times and was stopped at the border three times and returned to the country. The Zelenskiy regime needs hostages. Now he is suing Zelensky, and the day before yesterday the court again denied him the right to leave Ukraine.

  22. You're really revealing your cruelty. What is it about genocide you like? What is it about death that appeals to you? What is it about tragedy that gets you going? Are all Russians like you? We have two posters that identify as Russian. You both seem to be fans of genocide, death, tragedy, and killing as many men, women and children in Ukraine as it takes. Are these Russian values? Now you are going after Biden for his stutter, kind of like you went after los vecinos for coming to the US and speaking Spanish. Some guy you are! Biden has always had a stutter, as you probably know. But it does seem to pop up more than it used to. We all have our things as we age. Vlad, for example, likes putting bullets in journalists' heads and poisoning critics. What Biden said about COVID was spot on. Trump was fired in part because of how he downplayed COVID, which killed 1.2 million Americans. Biden's problem was that the Trump cult often refused to get vaccinated. Which meant after the vaccines were out deaths skewed toward MAGA cult folk. Don't blame Biden for not wanting Trump supporters to die. The way you seem fine with Ukrainian men, women and children dying thanks to your sadist's genocide. DeSantis bragged about how Florida did COVID right. That's true, as long as you like death. Florida had 4,412 deaths per million, compared to 2,838 per million in California. What is particularly interesting is that before the vaccines came out Florida and California has almost equal death rates. I know because I was paying close attention to them at the time. So that huge difference in death rates is because in California deaths slowed down, thanks to vaccines.. And in Florida they sped up thanks to people - Trump supporters - not taking them. In California there were huge differences in counties, based on vaccinations rates. The most liberal pro-Biden counties had death rates that were a fraction of the most most pro-Trump conservatives counties. And it was all about vaccinations rates. The same thing happened all over the world. Sweden championed letting COVID run rampant. They ended up with 2,677 deaths per million, or over double the 1,204 deaths per million suffered by their neighbor Norway. The Swedish government ended up repudiating their own policy. There are examples like that all over the world. Australia to this day has 933 dead per million, or about one quarter of the US death rate. And Australia's rate was a fraction of what it is now during their lockdown. It skyrocketed AFTER they opened up, and the vaccines came out. Because the vaccines could not protect very old vaccinated seniors, who were most of the people who died in Australia. Meanwhile, in the US, lots and lots of middle aged Trump supporters, and even young men with kids, died because they wouldn't get vaccinated. So what Australia proved is that more thoughtful policies, and especially use of vaccines, could perhaps have kept most of the Americans who died alive. But these are people who refused to get vaccinated. Why are you for death? What is it about death you like? Going after Biden because he tried to get as many people vaccinated as possible is championing death. Just like you're a champion of genocide and death for Ukrainian men, women, and children. What the fuck is wrong with you people, @Kostik? Are Russian cruelty and Vlad's genocide viruses like COVID, that spread and kill? It seems like it!

  23. Right, the area within which this unfortunate incident took place does look “forest-y”. It seems to be situated within, bounded by, a fairly developed area. An unusual extended pattern of one or more barking domestic dogs apparently figured somewhat in alerting a local that something was amiss. As I wrote previously, I read the word ‘grove’ in one piece and ‘forest’ in another. I think, however, that a grove may be a few acres but would be lacking the extent of underbrush and other vegetation bridging the distance between the taller trees as seen in the images. An addition to the thread less tangential than has already occurred might be the nomenclature of a cake named after a wooded area that has a cherry orchard, cacao trees, and a cow pasture situated within it. Attached are perpendicular vantage points at one corner of the space.

  28. No, you don’t get it, besides which “alibi” is used incorrectly. A board member posts points of view that other members disagree with and that other members have the prerogative to refute. Frankly, I don’t follow all the themes related to the discourse among this particular board member and others here because polarized views are part and parcel of social media and often go on at length without resolution. Partisan positions are often articulated clearly and eloquently in the face of opposing perspective and mutually potentially expand thinking among the readership. However, I witness that a board member with his index finger crazy-glued to the downvote key puts forward the strategy that a concrete punitive measure outside the chatroom boundaries be levied against the first aforementioned member, be operated in coordinated fashion by the board membership. We don’t do that here. Such lobbying is nothing short of a temper tantrum. Subsequent to this, the board member whose livelihood is threatened simply indicates that undermining his activities is essentially an own goal due to the negative cascade effect that could ensue. He adds that the sabotaging proposition mirrors the approach taken by the entities the strategy is intended to suffocate. What you just did is assert that that he implied that whatever might be salutary about his businesses justifies his points of view in a separate arena, that they somehow exist in a zero sum equation. This is a fallacy of logic, as if he buys into the notion, for example, that Hitler’s fondness for dogs and babies offsets the egregious. He made no such type of connection whatsoever. He did not suggest that one corollary of his employment structure and activities was the privilege of an opinion. He simply intelligently opposed the shenanigans of another board member whose obvious antipathy and overzealous and usually misapplied cancel-culture bent led to idiotic scheming and a salvo that, as it turns out apart from having no legitimate place here, would lack intended impact.

  29. Maybe they are catching up with the backlog because the turnaround time for my e-visa (received yesterday) was only two weeks. Happily, it was also a ten-year visa. Because the e-visa is not a stamp or glued into my passport, I'm going to make multiple backup copies for my computer and physical files. I do not want to misplace it! Plus I'm going to save the PDF as a JPG and store another copy on my phone in the album where I keep photos of my passport, vaccinations, etc. Incidentally, quite a few seemingly authoritative visa companies stated that you can use your credit card report showing your maximum and available balance instead of sending your bank account details. That is what I did. For my Chase Visa, I only sent the one "cover page" that shows the max and available balance (in Acrobat I added yellow highlights), rather than the additional pages that list all my specific monthly credit card charges. Apparently, that was fine. Nice to have this wrapped up.

  30. Lets stay on topic which is Russia led by Putin. Courts are slow and first the regime must be put down, then justice can follow. Putin is already now a fugitive (international arrest warrant issued). A United Nations investigation has found further evidence that Russian forces committed “indiscriminate attacks” and war crimes in Ukraine, including rape and the deportation of children to Russia. “The collected evidence further shows that Russian authorities have committed the war crimes of wilful killing, torture, rape and other sexual violence, and the deportation of children to the Russian Federation,” a United Nations commission of inquiry on Ukraine said in a report submitted to the UN general assembly.

Now in 2024 I have found Boyztown has only two functioning gogos and Sunee is like a Western ghost town. The busy Jomtien Complex on the other hand is like attending the United Nations with boys (many twinks) from all parts of Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, possibly Vietnam but I have not not come across one from there. Expertise using Google Translate is an important skill when trying to communicate especially as many seem to have only recently arrived in Thailand. Last night I could not make much progress when trying to talk to a Burmese boy as there does not seem to be an English - Burmese google facility, but maybe I didn’t look hard enough. Likewise the customers are drawn from virtually all parts of the first world (Europe, Australasia, USA/Canada) and many appear to be taking vacations from their retirement homes. The Dongtan Beach gay section is flourishing despite reports of its death. I have enjoyed over several days the confortable chairs, good food/drinks service, and the wonderful weather. The few older ladies encroaching do not detract from the ambiance, but only one or two customers were accompanied by their young boyfriends.

From The Nation Time magazine has placed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on the cover of its March 25 edition, calling him “The Salesman”. “I want to tell the world that Thailand is open for business again,” Srettha tells Time’s Charlie Campbell, during a wide-ranging interview held in a Government House room “ringed by whiteboards chock-full of scrawled policy objectives: digital wallets, national aviation hubs, potash mining, Tesla”. Srettha stares from the cover with a look of determination on his face, arms crossed over his chest. The prime minister’s efforts since taking office last August have already paid dividends, Time says, noting that foreign direct investment in the fourth quarter of 2023 doubled from a year earlier as Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft inked deals worth a combined US$8.3 billion or 296 billion baht. But Srettha has inherited a stagnating economy, soaring inequality and a politically divided country from the previous “quasi-military” government, it adds. Thailand’s GDP growth “has been below 2% over the past decade, while neighbours like the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam registered double to triple that rate and ate Thailand’s lunch on FDI”. Srettha freely acknowledges the depth of his challenge, telling the American news icon that Thailand is in an “economic crisis”. However, Time says the country feels “shortchanged by his election” after Srettha’s Pheu Thai party came second to Move Forward, which was then blocked from forming a government by a military-appointed Senate. “The paradox is that Srettha is fighting to fix Thailand’s economy by partnering with the same forces invested in thwarting major reform,” the magazine says.
